Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 28 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Mag357 on 4/26/2023: Last bottle. At the beginning, the wine was quite disjointed and acidic, and then after 2 hours of air, it came into place. Scents of blue fruits with a hint spices and oak, followed by a sleek and taut mouthfeel, there is good vibrancy in the mid palate, ending in a long minerally inflected bitter cherry pit finish. A cold year so laking in depth and sap, and while this is good now, there is still plenty of upside to develop more perfume in the years to come. (612 views)
Tasted by Vinvidz on 4/10/2023 & rated 93 points: Light to medium red. Very expressive nose of red fruit and some earthiness. Light but perfectly balanced palate of red cherry and some spice and saline character. Very elegant NSG, perhaps more Vosne in character. Lovely medium finish. Standout harmonious. Everything in balance and singing together. (448 views)
Tasted by Mag357 on 2/27/2023: I like Grivot in cold years, because the Domaine is as always one of the last to harvest the fruit, so usually there is no green dilution in lesser vintage at the Domaine, and the fruit is at maturity. Aromas of red and blue fruits, floral with violet notes, with a hint of green that disppeared after an hour, plenty of Vosne spices, a sappy mouthfeel, plums and blue fruits, elegant and lush, diplaying great persistent power for the vintage, in a chalky, bone dry long finish. The Nuits power play started to fully emerge after 2 hours of air. For me one of the best 1er Nuits in this vintage, and more Vosne than Nuits on the nose but retaining the fiery Nuits tannins. This is a tremendous success for a cold year, and a treat, a joyful wine. (647 views)
Tasted by Mascarello59 on 2/18/2023 flawed bottle: Very green verging on flawed. (484 views)
Tasted by NickA on 4/16/2021 & rated 92 points: Felt quite ready to go. Very slightly tight for around 15 minutes after opening, with the nose not yet giving a great deal and some greenness on the palate, but thereafter got going nicely, especially on the shimmering, intoxicating nose: trademark Grivot blackcurrant, slightly earthy, slightly gamey, occasional hints of flowers, ending up with musk and borscht. The palate never quite matched up - it is a 2011 after all - with a feeling of slight underripeness sneaking up with every sip. Would probably have been better with food, but the nose meant it provided plenty of entertainment regardless. (1415 views)
Tasted by RED AND BLACK on 4/11/2021 & rated 92 points: I found this to be very well balanced between earthy and fruity notes. Nice full nose of red fruits, good acidity, drinks really well now. Not a full bodied burgundy, but there is ok structure. Well made NSG, drinking great now (878 views)
Tasted by Tim2 on 3/20/2021 & rated 92 points: Delicious, with steak on the grill, roasted potatoes, spinach, mushrooms and carrots. And pré birthday époisses. (993 views)
Tasted by asparagus on 1/2/2021 & rated 91 points: A very well made wine. Lovely floral aromatics, still-primary fruit and acid and a chiseled mineral core. This was clearly on the red fruit spectrum. Only thing that prevented a higher score was the presence of a noticeable vegetal streak which I do not dislike, but which detracted from the wine . A solid 91.

Note: And I like some vegetal/herbal notes in my wine - am a big Sociando / Cab Franc fan. (1313 views)
Tasted by BenBlu on 10/8/2020 & rated 92 points: Side by side the 2010 this faired very well. Of course a bit leaner, but not green. Had a nice citric thread to it that made it a good pairing with the fish dish with beurre blanc. Like the 10 the 11 also is quite polished for a Nuits, no hard edges here, something I often find in the combination of vineyard Boudots from Vosne based winemakers. Which is why I quite seek this terroir out as I feel it offers good value for a Vosne style of wine. (1622 views)
Tasted by Mascarello59 on 4/27/2020: Same bottle as back in October 2019. Same impressions as last time and no degradation at all from the Coravin. (1640 views)
Tasted by Mascarello59 on 10/20/2019 & rated 94 points: New bottle tapped with Coravin. Sweet spicey red fruit with wild strawberry and ripe raspberry. Deep and luscious aromas. Lean without being leafy, elegant, focused and feminine. Good fruit with clove spice, bright acidity, low tannin. Wonderful balance and a harmonius finish. Better than last bottle. Drink now and up to 5-6 years. (1504 views)
Tasted by nzinkgraf on 9/5/2019: OR/WA Sept 2019; 9/3/2019-9/7/2019: Red cherry fruit aromas. On the palate, some stem inclusion, lots of freshness. Medium/- tannin if not more. (1595 views)
Tasted by AlphaMikeFoxtrot on 4/14/2019 & rated 91 points: Strawberries, cherries, mushrooms and herbs. Oak influence too, cedar, bordering on, vanilla. Still needs some time but approaching peak. I’d hold it. (829 views)
Tasted by Mascarello59 on 12/8/2018 & rated 93 points: From Coravin and served at 13 degrees. Spicey red (towards raspberries) and blue (sloe), slightly sweet nose. Gorgeous fruit and balance in the mouth, soft tannin with good acidity levels. A bit earthy mid. The finish is of medium length and it's very nicely balanced. This is already in a great place now but it will drink very well another decade. So much better than the vintage would indicate. 93-94p. (1570 views)
Tasted by soyhead on 11/2/2018: Brambleberry, purple licorice, sappy, and slightly rootbeered. Good intensity but too Russian riveresque for my liking (1458 views)
Tasted by rlove on 1/20/2018 & rated 93 points: A unique nose, mixing savory game with Vosne-like spice, plus a hint of sappy red berry. Gorgeous texture, plush and lightweight, carrying lots of earthy flavors. Finishes a tad austere. The 2011 Les Boudots is notable for its atypical yet attractive aromatic and flavor profile. Drink now through 2028. (2136 views)
Tasted by markricardo on 8/25/2017 & rated 95 points: This is beautiful, elegant and complete wine. It has a purplish rouge color and on the nose it shows earth, red cherries and black raspberry. The palate is medium bodied, elegant with perfectly integrated tannins, showing blue fruits, black raspberry, morel cherry, black liquorish and minerals. Just an amazing texture with a moderately long finish. A very sophisticated wine that gave great pleasure. Drinking well now after 1.5 hour decant but will definitely be in a good place for the next few years. (2085 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 4/11/2017 & rated 94 points: Wow, what a positive surprise in this lesser vintage. Beautiful and sophisticated nose of red and blue fruit, whole clusters, touch of blue fruit. Light and fresh on the palate but enough volume to carry through, soft tannins. Great pinosity, long and clean finish. (2612 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/24/2016: Nuits St. Georges Tasting (Knightsbridge - Northbrook IL): Tasting, brief note. A lighter and elegantly styled NSG, showing its Vosne-like character. Advancing earth notes. Bit firm finish. Slightly less concentration than I'd expect, or certainly vs the 2012 also tasted today. Similar to when tasted before. (2802 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 4/19/2016: Tuesday Night Blind Tasting $70+ (Roswell, GA): Dull ruby core with pale rim; sweet nose, watermelon, funk, sweet dark cherry, a bit of iron, smoky edge; sweet fresh and young, ripe fruit, dark cherry, slight blueberry, plump and round; very good. (2219 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 11/9/2014: Knightsbridge Annual Holiday Burgundy/Champagne Tasting and Sale (Northbrook, IL): Tasting, brief note. Much like when I tasting this in the spring, it is forward and accessible. Some earthy notes are coming through already. Good now, best to drink young. (3635 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 4/6/2014: Knightsbridge 2011 Burgundy Tasting and Sale (Northbrook, IL): Tasting, brief note. In contrast to the Grivot Vosne 1er Beaux Monts which was backward, this was more forward and fresh, perhaps with slightly less spice. Here the concentration didn't come across as brooding, but as fleshy, balanced and pleasurable. (3388 views)
Tasted by vespasian on 11/6/2012 & rated 91 points: Dark fruits on the black cherry/black raspberry spectrum. herbs and earth. Good definition; good density of fruit here. Textural again. Darker fruits on the palate. Good length, a hint of mocha in the finish. Long. 90-92 (1892 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
