Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.5 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 101 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by clarktoews on 3/20/2024 & rated 92 points: This is a well made wine. Colour was a deep red(no browning). Definitely had more earthy notes at this age. Not my style but a good wine (252 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 2/18/2024 & rated 92 points: Nice dark nose, vanilla, lactic... Nice fresh tannin, black fruit. (653 views)
Tasted by wicozani on 11/15/2023 & rated 93 points: A surprisingly opaque dark purple robe with slightly thinning edges. The nose beckons with dark cherry, red plum, and hints of citrus and oregano. Many of the aforementioned notes on the palate, along with some oak spices and forest floor. No secondary notes thus far, this has a significant lifespan still ahead. (809 views)
Tasted by theronware on 11/12/2023 flawed bottle: Badly corked. (813 views)
Tasted by IWFS DC on 9/15/2023: IWFS September 2023 dinner at Nina May. Lasagna course. (995 views)
Tasted by whits on 6/19/2023 & rated 90 points: A dark red with a crimson edge, the nose shows hints of cedar wood chips, dried cranberry and soy, concentrated with big acid and deep fruit, strong, sturdy showcase of red and black cherry, ripe raspberry, tobacco and spice, food-friendly, awesome with spaghetti bolognese, delicious now and ready to drink (1290 views)
Tasted by bonedoc on 5/23/2023 & rated 90 points: This wine never lived up to itself. Acidity overshadows generic dark purple fruits. Not bad, but nothin special. (1333 views)
Tasted by DK Amateur on 5/17/2023 flawed bottle: Flawed again though much less than the bottle in 2022. This had an somewhat oxydized nose that might have been acceptable in a natural wine. And in the mouth it wasn't too bad, actually rather impressive in its tight fruit. But overall we did not want to drink. A pity considering the usual excellence of Carbonaione. (1081 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 4/23/2023 & rated 91 points: No notes taken. This had an impressive power and concentration but felt young and a bit too rustic. To be fair, being served after two elegant Pinot, the very structured Sangiovese never had a chance. I think it could have been better would we have decanted it for quite some time. I was a bit surprised to still find it this young and primary with hardly any tertiary development at all. I would wait another 5-10 years.

Decanting: Not decanted. My guess is that it could have used 2-3 hours. (1692 views)
Tasted by Radders12345 on 4/19/2023 & rated 93 points: Bottle off the list at 67PM.
On the nose sapid red fruit, balsamic.
Rich and intense palate with more blue plum and spices.
Excellent acidity and lift with tannins that are well integrated. Lots of time in hand with this but really delicious and excellent VFM. (1216 views)
Tasted by kofigan on 12/26/2022 & rated 94 points: Maybe just pushing my rating but this was superb, especially after several hours open in the bottle. Tannins fully integrated, bold cherry but with a vibrant spice, and enough depth to linger (joyfully!) on the palate. You can ask for more of a wine but this had zero flaws and a "let's open another" character. (1089 views)
Tasted by Highlander on 11/10/2022: This has big potential. I agree with others that it tastes very, very young, and with mostly integrated tannins. I suspect it will be much better in a few years....but still quite enjoyable now. Gave it 2 hours in the duck. I would like it to calm down a bit in the coming years. Try again in 2 years (1126 views)
Tasted by Michael T. Zoppo on 10/30/2022: I haven't opened one of these since release and I am struck by young and primary the fruit profile remains. The tannins have smoothed, but otherwise this wine is overflowing with youth. No tertiary notes whatsoever. Violets, black cherry, snappy acidity, and a long finish make this a powerful (and unique) expression of Sangiovese. No harm drinking these now on their fruit, but my guess is there's 20 years of life left. (1256 views)
Tasted by DK Amateur on 10/16/2022 flawed bottle: Horribly oxydised, smelling of sewer. (1161 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 9/18/2022 & rated 93 points: Beautiful bouquet with cherries, sweet spices and forest impressions. On the palate a lot of cherries, enormously concentrated, chocolate, sweet spices, beautiful acidity. A mouth full of beautiful wine. In a lovely drinking stage now and also the next 3+ years I suppose. 92 - 93 (1394 views)
Tasted by bonedoc on 9/13/2022: This bottle was good, but the acidity was a bit cloying. (1258 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 4/9/2022 & rated 96 points: Still dark garnet color, barely any signs of age. Deep, layered and complex, with notes of black currant, blackberries, dark plum, some elderberries, crushed violets, leather, some spices, also some cedar, a little bit of graphite. Complex and deep while still young at the same time. It‘s medium-full bodied, dense and powerful, with medium-high excellent acidity and still medium-high tannin that hasn‘t melted away much, at least in this bottle. Excellent length. A superb Carbonaione and from my perspective probably the best vintage made to date. It‘s just starting to get into the drink window, ideally I would wait another 3-5 years though. Excellent. (2037 views)
Tasted by bonedoc on 11/8/2021: limited notes - dark fruits, lively acidity, paired well w/ sausage/pancetta pasta. 92 (1977 views)
Tasted by clarktoews on 10/24/2021 & rated 90 points: very dark in colour, almost inky. Throws off a TON of sediment. decently smooth, need to revisit (1961 views)
Tasted by repoper on 7/23/2021 & rated 93 points: Slowoxed all day then into a decanter for an hour. Still very dark and impenetrable. Beautiful aromas of cherries and dark fruits surrounded by a bit of tobacco. It's very smooth in the mouth as the tannins have calmed down and are fully integrated. Dark fruits, tobacco, smoke and licorice? This is just into the begining of, what will be, a long drinking window. Have a few more that I will save for another few years to see where this goes. (2264 views)
Tasted by repoper on 4/25/2021: Slowoxed 2 bottles for 8 hours then into a decanter for another few. Needed all of this and more. Still the darkest Sangiovese I've ever seen. Beautiful nose of dark spices flanked by red fruit with a hint of cardamom The legs just slowly drip down the sides of the glass, almost staining it. At first it was a bit lean, but as it sat in the glass beautiful notes lilac, red fruit, smoke, and a bit of barnyard emerge. As we had 2 bottles open the second one was much better, which tells me that it could really use a few more years in the cellar. It will be a really fun wine then. (2608 views)
Tasted by awever on 4/10/2021 & rated 92 points: Viel Struktur und Kraft (2398 views)
Tasted by clarktoews on 4/3/2021 & rated 92 points: Wow! What a surprise. This wine is big, bold smooth and in my opinion better than Tig (2069 views)
Tasted by Schiffy on 1/22/2021 & rated 93 points: Dark, blue fruits, concentrated with notes of tobacco, licorice and currant. A touch of smoke on the finish. Smooth tannins after an hour decant. Not particularly expressive on the palate but a full mouth feel. Overall, an excellent wine that is well made. (2450 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 12/18/2020 & rated 92 points: Rich and somewhat extracted, with dark, ripe black and blue fruit notes, some smoke and pencil lead. I found the acid too prominent, even with ample time in the glass. Naturally, showed best with food. Others liked it more than I did, and there should be upside with further cellar development. Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
