Tasted by paulst on 1/10/2024 & rated 93 points: Earthy and mature; mocha with light licorice and some berry; earthy balanced finish. (419 views)
Tasted by kim@meko.ru on 4/6/2023 & rated 95 points: PnP. Burgundy glass. Abundant nose with cedar, smokiness and soft leather. Earthy, with remaining black fruit, balsamic, liquorice. With some aeration in the glass getting more lively with more fruit and acidity. Very elegant and beautiful, even sensual wine. (779 views)
Tasted by rgawlowski on 8/1/2022 & rated 94 points: Excellent . Peppery on the nose, tongue and palate; nice smooth finish; lite dark fruit touch on the palate. (1253 views)
Tasted by paulst on 6/4/2021 & rated 98 points: Sweet earthy nose; soft and layered; coarse; mocha; round semi crunchy texture; coating; long, long smooth mocha coating finish; outstanding. (2384 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 3/18/2021: A Year Later in Vero...; 3/17/2021-3/21/2021 (Vero Beach): This was a pnp and it was ready for business right from the beginning. Drinking incredibly well. All gamey and a bit smokey and just a background of black fruit going. Really enjoyable. (2677 views)
Tasted by jordanj on 10/24/2020 & rated 93 points: A Zoom tasting of decent wines. An excuse to be social. (Zoom): Big blast of of white and back pepper. Some soy reduction notes and little fruit. If I didn’t know the wine, I would have guessed a southern Rhône. Medium weight, yet an excellent finish. Really good but not great. (2611 views)
Tasted by paulst on 4/12/2020 & rated 94 points: Earthy blackberry; coarse; concentrated; tannic; young; sweet fruit fwd finish. (2335 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 2/5/2020 & rated 96 points: Tasted double blind. This is a great showing and at least this bottle seems to be at its peak. Wonderfully complex and precise with a full array of primary, secondary and tertiary aromas embedded in a soft structure with a good freshness. The complete package. After several closed and mediocre Chapoutier bottles this wine – notably not a vintage with crazy score – restored my faith in this producer. You just have to catch them at the right time. 96 to 97 points.

TN: The highlight here was a layered, dense and sexy nose with sweet dark fruit, cassis, animal notes, hints of leather and herbs. Intense, precise and harmonious. Just a tad less impressive on the palate with a dense texture full of dark fruit, crushed rocks, black pepper and some tertiary aromas, which however were not as well-defined as the other aromas. Despite the density the wine showed little weight with very soft tannins and a good freshness.

Decanting: Not decanted, no decant necessary (but that might greatly vary from bottle to bottle). (2854 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 1/31/2020 & rated 94 points: Tasted blind. Drank from decanter over several hours. Bright, shining red cherry embedded in lots of aging, clearly animal notes. Also white pepper and a whiff of sweet spices. Beautifully velvety tannins - yet with grip. In a magnificent spot right now - great, expressive fruit coupled with the ripeness of age. A lack of versatility is maybe what keeps me from going to the realm of excellence (95+). Impressive stamina even after hours in the glass. (1738 views)
Tasted by paulst on 1/12/2020 & rated 90 points: Initially earthy with light blackberry; later licorice, plummey black currant; sweet earth and moderate finish. (1536 views)
Tasted by Willi Vinotti on 4/23/2018 & rated 93 points: A very precise wine, dark and opaque red, super dense and silky tannins, earthy notes with slight hints of menthol. It could probably evolve and open further. Though the aromatic density is never overwhelming, balance is key, reasonable level of 13% ABV makes this wine elegant and cool. (2180 views)
Tasted by paulst on 9/12/2017 & rated 95 points: Earthy raisen and cedar and chocolate; deep but light; long finish. (2373 views)
Tasted by HaraldS on 12/25/2016 & rated 88 points: Over the hill and a little off tasting. Likey just an off bottle (2666 views)
93 pts (2837 views)
Tasted by ricknat1 on 7/9/2015: i let it breathe in bottle for 2 hours and it was not enough. Wine seemed closed or thin. i will put this away for a while (3898 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 7/7/2015 & rated 95 points: This is still quite young. It took at least 4 hours in the decanter before the wine began to open and soften and provide its, spicy, mineral, peppery, ripe, black and red fruit charms. It's hard to believe, but it could take 5-10 more years in the cellar, or 4-6 hours in the decanter, if you want to enjoy the wine. (3939 views)
Tasted by jerhardt on 3/25/2015 & rated 94 points: Really nice Hermitage. Started off fairly lean, with classic grilled meat and bacon fat notes. Over the course of dinner in the decanter it really put on weight (one can certainly debate whether this was for the better). In any case, really good now, but certainly plenty of life ahead. (2960 views)
Tasted by paulst on 7/26/2014 & rated 95 points: Austere, earthy and beautiful silky smooth blackberry; integrated tannins great balance and long finish. (3209 views)
Tasted by cardsandwine on 10/20/2013: Superb hermitage. Enticing earthy bouquet, full-bodied on the palate with a long and soft finish. Drank along side 2000 Chapoutier Le Pavillion and it absolutely held its own. (3685 views)
Tasted by gsquireh on 5/14/2011 & rated 93 points: Full-bodied with balanced rounded tannis and sweet tobacco enriching the black and red ripe fruit. Lovely. (4660 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 3/8/2011 & rated 95 points: Meaty, beefy, big and bouncy is great record from The Who, That title also describes this Hermitage from Chapoutier. Big, dense, powerful and filled with layers of ripe , black fruit, minerals, pepper, earth and truffles, this young, masculine wine has barely budged from the day it was released, Give it another 7-10 years before popping a bottle. (4868 views)
Tasted by jpijg on 5/1/2010 & rated 96 points: Very dark colour. Nose of blackberry tar, liquorice, violet, tobacco, powerful, yet well balanced and precise. In the mouth the wine although massive, displays same restained power. Tannins are mighty, yet velvety. Fruits flavours are sharpened by graphite, tar and cigarbox fragrance. Hints of autumn forest add even more complexity. Although extremely concentrated, the texture and balance are perfect. The finale lasts for ever. This wine should drink for anothee 20 years. (4189 views)
Tasted by Goldstone on 5/1/2010 & rated 91 points: Dinner at Jean-Paul and Isabelle's House (Sai Kung, Hong Kong): Deep blood red semi-transparent colour. Nose of tar, eucalyptus, wet red rocks, hint of mint, dried thyme, some jammy plum. The nose is almost Australian for its sun-driven character and richness but in a distinctively more restrained manner. Palate is very fruit driven with quite distinct and not fully integrated new oak and strawberries....Barolo quality about it. A bit lacking in length but good resonance. Needs more time. Still primary. Will definitely improve with more age but, for me, less impressive than the Rostaing La Londonne 1998 on the night. (5205 views)
Tasted by gsquireh on 4/18/2010 & rated 95 points: Lovely red and black berries with aromatic notes of licorice and lead pencil combine in this elegant and powerful wine. Balanced tannins and deliciously textured this wine has an extraordinary finish. (3736 views)
Tasted by stocksandbondage on 4/28/2009 & rated 94 points: Showed better than a 1998 Guigal La-La wine (I forget which one). Classic aromas of raspberry and black cherry. Full, refined tannins. Long, juicy finish. (3450 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Hermitage

Guide to Hermitage wine Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The appellation stretches over 3 communes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.

• The soils are a combination of granite with alluvial quaternary delta deposits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the numerous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.

• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majority of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.

•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).

• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
