Community Tasting Notes (average 89.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 28 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by linkin22luke on 12/25/2023: Vibrant acidity and still drinking beautifully. Lighter on its feet than the Moritz and Brookman 03s. (467 views)
Tasted by rmcnees on 11/24/2017 & rated 92 points: Consistent with earlier tasting notes albeit starting to show its age a bit, past its prime but still drinking very well. Dark garnet inky color, full bodied, concentrated thick chewy, almost coating the tongue - forward black and blue fruits, ripe black raspberry turns to a tone of spice, hint of cedar and kirsch with a slight metallic/mineral undertone - ends with a full, moderate soft chewy tannin finish.

Tasted by sithinfiltrator on 10/22/2014 & rated 86 points: Over the hill and flabby. Which is sad because it was a good wine. (2680 views)
Tasted by Kraigers1 on 3/30/2013 & rated 93 points: Drinking nicely. A bit of leather and jammy fruit; blackberry and liqueur tastes. Heavy, still. Hasn't lost it's power. (3303 views)
Tasted by pdadams66 on 9/6/2011 & rated 88 points: As before but slightly burnt notes on the taste and caramelized oranges on the nose. Not a deal breaker, but does detract a little. Not sure about storage before purchase... (4505 views)
Tasted by pdadams66 on 7/3/2011 & rated 89 points: Deep dark center, dark red to brown rim, signs of age.
Smokey, malty, minty, blackberries, saddle soap, herby finish (rosemary, thyme), olives.
Smooth, glycerine, redcurrants, blackcurrants, low acidity and tannin, great length.
Excellent syrah, nose is reminiscent of a Tardieu-Laurent syrah but with a sweeter nose and body. Ready to drink now, won't last too much longer. (4494 views)
Tasted by rmcnees on 2/26/2011 & rated 91 points: Dark garnet inky color. Full bodied, thick chewy, almost coating the tongue - forward black and blue fruits, ripe black raspberry turns to a tone of spice, hint of cedar and kirsch with a slight metallic/mineral undertone - ends with a full, moderate soft chewy tannin finish. Opened at OTBN (Open That Bottle Night) dinner.

Tasted by Brownvino on 8/23/2010 & rated 88 points: Very light in color and taste. More like a Granache than a shiraz. (4128 views)
Tasted by CabIsKing on 1/31/2010 & rated 91 points: Very nice nose of dark fruits, chocolate and leather followed by a smooth well balanced finish. A very tasty wine. (2987 views)
Tasted by Stephan O on 3/30/2009 & rated 90 points: Severely overpriced, but tasty. The overarching theme on the nose and palate is raspberry or blackberry preserves. Spotted some coffee in there, too. There's some tart acidity in the midpalate, and a lot of herb toward the back end. So much herb, in fact, that this wine finishes almost like a Pinot, which is sort of funny in an Aussie Shiraz. (3166 views)
Tasted by wineywhites on 12/25/2008 & rated 90 points: Not really taking serious notes. Very tasty, nice ripe black fruit and integrated tannins, but not as complex as I would hope. Not sure if time would help or not, as it was hard to tell how this would age. Really good, but not as stunning as the Moritz that I remember. (2985 views)
Tasted by vardaman on 12/10/2008 & rated 85 points: Really let down on this one. Not displaying anything not available in a bottle for half the price. (3039 views)
Tasted by beezer6 on 10/29/2008 flawed bottle: Tried another bottle of the Baker's Gully to see if more were flawed...and I'm glad I did...LAME!!!
More vinegary essences with absolutely no fruit showing. The cork was almost completely bled through...what's going on!?!? (3005 views)
Tasted by beezer6 on 10/23/2008 flawed bottle: Just turned. Vinegar aroma. (2950 views)
Tasted by winelovr2001 on 9/23/2008 & rated 88 points: A great nose, but the palate is a little of on this one. This wine shows a lot of acidity and heat in the midpalate...there seems to be some bottle variation with this wine. (2918 views)
Tasted by AtlantaBill on 8/12/2008 & rated 90 points: Dark garnet-almost black. Aroma of chocolate and leather and blackberries. Flavor of blackberries and dark fruits. Tame tannins. Looooooooong finish. (2910 views)
Tasted by Winevestor on 6/12/2008 & rated 87 points: A good smokey, leathery nose. Followed by a huge fruit-bomb of a taste. As Parker outlines it is clear that this is designed by CH to be an entry level wine to lead people to the brand. I got it on sale for around $32, and at that price this was a good buy. It does have a chemical flavor and is very like fortified ribena. It does not have the complexity of the other CH bottlings, with any of the layers. Fun wine to drink though without food.  Tasted by lkatz on 5/27/2008 & rated 90 points: great drinker with bbq ribs. Integrated fruit and tannins, smooth and nice finish (3141 views)
Tasted by tarheel17 on 5/13/2008: slightly herbal nose, nice fruit, but palate is a bit bitter, reminds me of a zin with all the raisin and bramblyness. THought it was OK. Won the blind tasting, though. (3210 views)
Tasted by beezer6 on 2/25/2007 & rated 92 points: Awesome stuff!! My first Clarendon Hills experience.
Beautifully balanced.
Nose of dark fruit, leather and a slight minerality.

Perfect balance of alcohol, acidity with moderate to low tannins.
Just got better over time.
Glad I have some more bottles. (3606 views)
Tasted by winelovr2001 on 12/14/2006 & rated 91 points: Better than other bottles I have had. This bottle had a great nose of black fruit and white pepper, on the mouth there was sweet dark fruits and a viscous mouthfeel. Nice. (3476 views)
Tasted by hutch on 9/30/2006 & rated 88 points: Clarendon Hills tasting. Gassed and tasted second day. Ruby/brick color. The least enjoyable of the three shiraz. The nose was not working for me. Some kind of metallic or other unorganic smell for me. The palate is all about bright fruit, with some signifigant viscosity. It's a fairly simple but hedonistic Shiraz that many will find enjoyable, but you're paying for the name here, as there are so many Aussie wines that can compete with this at half the price. 88-90. Clarendon Hills

Producer website

CLARENDON HILLS

Inspired by the classic South Australian wines of the 1950s and 1960s, particularly Penfolds, the visionary Roman Bratasiuk, a former biochemist, bought the old Elysium winery at Blewitt Springs, near Clarendon in McLaren Vale. By chance he found the nearby 10 acre Astralis Vineyard as a source of "as good as you can get" Shiraz. The vines were first planted in 1920 with 19th century colonial vine-stock derived from Chateau Reynella. Best known for the flagship wine Astralis Syrah, Clarendon Hills also produces a portfolio of single vineyard age-worthy Grenache & Syrah wines derived from 35 to 75-year-old dry grown vines, from the Clarendon, Blewitt Springs and Kangarilla sub-regions of McLaren Vale.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.
