Tasted by kendrickbaker on 12/30/2023 & rated 85 points: Opened a 375 cl bottle and it is not holding up well despite the right storage conditions. Sad little teddy hear that’s lost it’s stuffing. (266 views)
Tasted by Rixon on 9/10/2023 & rated 95 points: Sex år sedan förra flaskan. Inte tillstymmelse till försämring, tvärtom. Tegelröd och fullpackad av tertiära aromer där jag tycker tobak sticker ut. Underbar och utmärkt. (582 views)
Tasted by oxwombat on 4/22/2023 & rated 91 points: Opened in Hong Kong. Decanted and enoyed over dinner with friends.

Not as good as the 2000 that we had alongside it. Less structure and definitely more advanced.

That being said, still a good bottle of Bordeaux and very enjoyable with food. Will keep, but unsure about longevity for upside so would not hesitate to enjoy with a bit of air. (1520 views)
Tasted by Tao on 4/22/2023 & rated 94 points: Approach to full maturity, creamy, velvety texture on the palate! Nose of amazing dark, sweet mineral fruits! Warm the hearts, lovely wine deserves attention. (955 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 12/16/2021: Delicious wine. It's a lighter style of Bordeaux in some ways - high acid and good fruit and just a bit less body than normal but I really enjoyed it. Will continue to keep an eye out for this producer. (2556 views)
Tasted by cephomer on 7/25/2021 & rated 90 points: Decanted briefly at RF's Vt lakehouse. Nose of tobacco & herbs, some leather. Wine very much showing its age. Light to medium body, very tannic, very acidic, still some black fruit here that faded rather quickly (Mistake to decant this wine). There's some tobacco, some leather, some forest floor. Not much depth, and the fruit faded. A bit of a disappointment. (2322 views)
Tasted by popopdrops on 7/4/2019 & rated 95 points: Fra Magnum. Vanvittig bra fra første glass, relativ fet frukt, syre hvor den hører hjemme, taniner finknust. Bare god. (3915 views)
Tasted by Claret & CdP Gang on 8/24/2018: Dinner at Ks, wines tasted blind, theme 2005 or older, thought was a left bank Bordeaux from Pauillac, my guess from a great vintage, subtle, classy, delicious, very good Conseillante (4239 views)
Tasted by Tao on 4/11/2018 & rated 94 points: Evolving at a glacial pace! Still very deep ruby in colour! Fabulous nose of dried herbs, minerals and rich red fruits! Smooth on the palate and still young! Quite satisfying and alluring! Can't ask for more from the vintage 1996 (4668 views)
Tasted by Claret & CdP Gang on 1/19/2018 & rated 94 points: Beautiful wine, kept getting better in the Zalto, wotn for me, class & elegance personified!

Tasted by franm on 11/23/2017 & rated 88 points: cheers - decanted for 3 hours...nothing wrong with the bottle, just did not meet expectations...not well rounded, very tart....my 2nd of 3 bottles, first bottle was also just ok.....the 1990 is so spectacular in comparison... (4101 views)
Tasted by Claret & CdP Gang on 9/7/2017 & rated 94 points: Still dark, chocolate, earth, lovely nose, damp forest floor, best nose of the night, classy Pomerol, perfect with rib eye, lovely purity, caressing

(3173 views)
Tasted by Rixon on 6/16/2017 & rated 95 points: Flaska två imponerar ännu mer än den första. Den första konsumerades hemma till mat, denna vid en provning, blint, i tuff konkurrens. Troligen borde jag egentligen pusha upp betyget ännu högre - tycker detta är ett fantastiskt bra vin. (2879 views)
Tasted by Patrik H on 6/15/2017 & rated 95 points: On the nose: Cedar, stable, leather, a classic Bordeaux nose
On the palate: Smooth and easy. Currant, cedar, still quite high acidity. A very nice wine
Long finish (2588 views)
Tasted by Rixon on 3/26/2017 & rated 95 points: Jag höjer betyget väsentligt jämfört med andra tyckare. (2879 views)
Tasted by Ramberg on 3/25/2017 & rated 94 points: Short note.
A very fine Pomerol, indeed!
Nose with lovely and complex depth, dark fruits, tobacco leafs, herbs, sous – bois, decaying leafs and forest floor, stable notes, leather, chocolate, cedar wood and graphite.
The list goes on, and as the wine opens up (and disappears) more and more reveals.
Palate is semi mature, with silky red and black fruit, red currant and plums, ripe sweet cherries, spicy and deep, smooth but still with rather high and clean acidity.
Nose beats the palate, perhaps a bit low on fruit vs. the acidity, but still very, very good, a package of silk.
Lovely place right now, went great with food tonight. (1194 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 2/16/2017 & rated 92 points: Always a beautiful wine with a perfumed nose. Palate is elegant and soft with cassis, forest and sweet red fruit. (2695 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 12/15/2016 & rated 92 points: Beautiful nose with perfume, flowers, violets, black fruit and graphite. Palate is soft and elegant. It does not have a lot of power but its the kind of classic right bank wine I enjoy a lot. (2483 views)
Tasted by dchain on 11/21/2016 & rated 93 points: Into the neck from VC's en primeur purchases. Cork looked brand new. No wine saturation. Pristine storage as always! Still deep ruby but immediately approachable on the nose. Plum, touch of Christmas cake, Cherry and some sweet musk and game. Very interesting nose. A hint of burgundy with some rose and jasmine perfume. On the palate everything is integrated and in balance. Medium bodied (in a good way) and caressing mouthfeel. Lovely ripe fruit but with a tint of savory game flavours coming through the palate as well. Extremely enjoyable and lovely finish which is surprisingly long and balanced. A massive surprise on the upside and also appreciated by the owners of SHL over a fabulous lunch at The Sports Club. (2432 views)
Tasted by davergny on 11/5/2016 & rated 92 points: Nose is a beautiful perfume of plums, berries, violets, spice, and sandalwood. A satin like texture, dark red currants and some spice on the palate. Fine dusty tannins poke at the tongue with a puckering finish. Keeps improving with air. Harmonious wine, just a little thin on the palate. (2347 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 10/25/2016 & rated 88 points: 1996 Bordeaux Blind: Flat nose, not very expressive. Mild cranberry. Improving with more air. Distinct minerals. Better on the palate, peaks mid palate and fades relatively quickly. (2836 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 9/5/2016 & rated 92 points: Consistent with previous note. Took an hour in the decanter to open up. (2310 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 8/10/2016 & rated 92 points: First bottle of the case. The wine opened up after 75 mins in the decanter. Nose has tobacco, wet forest floor, ash, dark fruit and soil. Palate is silky with refined tannins, high acidity and balanced dark fruit. It gradually gains power in the glass with air but the finish is a bit short for a 96 bordeaux. The palate is missing the fruit sharpness and freshness to be a great wine. Nevertheless, it is a fully mature bordeaux that is drinking very well at its peak (2273 views)
Tasted by Claret & CdP Gang on 7/23/2016 & rated 95 points: Dark still, wow nose, tea leaves, rustic and utterly charming, fully mature, absolutely delicious Pomerol, class wine! Beaten only by the 95 alta Rioja 890 for the WOTN

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Saint Emilion Grat Classified Growth, Classified Growths, Grands Crus Classes, GCC

In 1954, while the "Graves" growths had just published their own classification, the wine syndicate of Saint-Emilion, composed by wine growers, brokers and wine traders with the approval of the INAO - Institut National des Appellations d'Origine (A.O.C), decided to work on a classification for the wines of Saint Emilion. Initially, four grades were defined. These were reduced to two - First Great Classified Growth (A and B) and Great Classified Growth - in 1984.

As of Medoc's 1855 historical grading, the Saint-Emilion Great Classified Growth classification is not only based on qualitative criteria by tasting the wines on a ten years period previous to the assessment, but also on commercial considerations such as:
- sales price levels
- national and international commercial distribution
- the estate's reputation on the market

Properties who don't manage to join the club of about sixty Classified Growths are given the denomination of Great Growth ("Grand Cru"), while the remaining wineries of the A.O.C are simply reported as "Saint-Emilion". It is to be noted that the owners must officially apply to appear in the official classification. Thus for example the famous Chateau Tertre-Roteboeuf, whose quality and reputation would easily justify to be listed among the First Great Classified Growths, does not appear here by the will of its owner, François Mitjaville.

The Saint-Emilion Great Growth classification was revised in 1969, 1985, 1996 and 2006. The only two guaranteed vintage (A.O.C) who can apply to the classification are the "Saint-Emilion Grand Cru" and "Saint-Emilion" areas.

By grading 61 properties, the 2006 revision confirmed many growths from the former classification, but also caused a number of surprises and a few inevitable disappointments. Many observers thought that the impressive progression of Perse's Chateau Pavie since 1998 would be rewarded by an upgrade into the First Great Classified Growths (A) category, but finally such was not the case.

Among the estates promoted to the First Great Classified Growths B category are Chateau Troplong-Mondot and Pavie-Macquin, whose efforts made since the Nineties fully justify their new grade. It should be noted that no First Great Classified Growth was relegated to the lower Great Classified Growth class.

Promoted growths from the status of Great Growth ("Grand Cru") to Great Classified Growth ("Grand Cru Classe") are: Chateaux Bellefont-Belcier, Destieux, Fleur Cardinale, Grand Corbin, Grand Corbin-Despagne and Monbousquet.

The demoted growths from the status of Great Classified Growth to Great Growth are: Chateaux Bellevue, Cadet Bon, Faurie de Souchard, Guadet Saint-Julien, La Tour du Pin-Figeac (Belivier), La Tour du Pin-Figeac (Moueix), Lamarzelle, Petite Faurie de Soutard, Tertre Daugay, Villemaurine and Yon-Figeac. If the recent samples of some of the above mentioned properties may justify their current downgrade, there are great chances that estates like Bellevue, Tertre Daugay or Yon-Figeac will be upgraded to their previous rankings by the next revision in 2016 as the progresses noted after 2000, but not entering in the range of vintages (1993 - 2002) appointed for the criteria of selection for the 2006 classification, are noticable.

The two following estates have completely disappeared from the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classification: Curé-Bon-la-Madeleine (integrated meanwhile to Chateau Canon) and La Clusière (integrated meanwhile to Chateau Pavie).

Finally, no estate considered as "garagiste" has integrated the classification. Valandraud, Mondotte, Le Dome, Bellevue-Mondotte or Magrez-Fombrauge have, for the least, the potential to be ranked as Great Classified Growths. In sight of the very fine quality reached by the above mentioned estates in recent vintages as well as all the innovative wine making methods used by the "garagistes", it remains to be seen whether the authorities will dare to cross the line in 2016..?
