Tasted by Zvillan on 3/18/2023: A very different Carlisle but I really liked it. Definitely savory, peppery and some sweetness. Went perfect with Venison Loin in the cast iron pan. I have one more in the cellar that I will be opening soon. (572 views)
Tasted by UMRich on 3/7/2022 & rated 90 points: As noted, more savory than the Zins. Very food friendly. (816 views)
Tasted by snarfglk on 12/20/2020 & rated 91 points: really good, so many different traits, maybe some Bordeaux nuances and no cab/merlot at all (988 views)
Tasted by kgott2 on 11/29/2020 & rated 92 points: Outstanding. Beautiful fruit and flowery nose. Worked much better in a Pinot glass. In a Syrah glass got more of the savory that Mike describes in his tasting notes. Not sure what more this wine will yield with more age. I'll set aside one for aging and drink the rest now. Sorry he didn't made another vintage of this. (911 views)
Tasted by djpo on 5/3/2020 & rated 91 points: A fun wine that introduces attributes of pinot and syrah (as described earlier) with gentle tannins and a cherry nose. Low/Medium complexity and satisfying with cream-based pasta dinner. (1112 views)
Tasted by nectar14 on 5/2/2020 & rated 90 points: Stands nicely on its own, but one can see why it's typically blended-- for acidity and structure, some purple fruited flavors. Enjoyable, and should drink well another 5 years I think. (809 views)
Tasted by jaumealaska on 1/4/2020 & rated 90 points: Interesting medium body. Good balance and finish. No notes written but will look for another bottle. (769 views)
Tasted by lvjohn on 11/1/2019 & rated 91 points: Surprisingly good and lighter than anticipated. Beautiful fragrant fruity nose. Tastes a bit like a Malbec mixed with some Pinot noir. Very short aftertaste. Nice mouthfeel too. Seems to be drinking really nicely now. There is no complexity to this wine. Serve judiciously! (769 views)
Tasted by treidling on 10/31/2019: definitely at or past peak, though still solid. Drink up (701 views)
Tasted by ShadowIII on 3/14/2019 & rated 91 points: dark purple, rich, lush, blackberries, blueberries, moderate tannins but good structure, long finish (955 views)
Tasted by snarfglk on 3/3/2019 & rated 90 points: One of the other tasters remarked this wine is a cross between a PN and a syrah. Very close, but a little more syrah spice. An unique varietal which should be tried if available. (791 views)
Tasted by spicy1 on 12/30/2018 & rated 87 points: Have had a few bottles of this wine over the last couple of years. Thought it was a field blend since the bottle doesn't identify the grapes. Checked out the outstanding Carlisle web site and found out that "Grand Noir" is a grape. Mostly used as a blending grape in France. Not sure it should stand alone. Not much fruit, a little too much tannin for my taste--but still drinkable. (746 views)
Tasted by garambler on 8/29/2018 & rated 91 points: We had this with my wife's enchiladas on 8/29/18. It had a rich, fragrant bouquet of plum, cherry, blueberry, toast, anise, pepper and spice aromas. The palate was rich, round and dry with flavors that followed the nose. (643 views)
Tasted by spicy1 on 8/25/2018 & rated 89 points: Think this still needs a few more years in the cellar. There is some spice forward that might be close to clove. Goes well with the black fruit. I have one more bottle and will try to wait at least a year or so. (808 views)
Tasted by Outplaying on 6/9/2018: Not sure if it is the vintage or the grape here, but this is nicely restrained with healthy acidity. Slightly light bodied, plenty of fruit and spice accents. (820 views)
Tasted by spicy1 on 4/29/2018 & rated 86 points: The opposite of fruit forward. A little thin but improves on night three. (1016 views)
Tasted by Mtnmd1 on 4/10/2018 & rated 91 points: Enjoying this from PnP. Fresh with good acidity belying it's 7 years of age. Moderate fruits, moderate finish. (1080 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 12/23/2017 & rated 92 points: Previous notes apply but more accessible (1033 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 12/22/2017: Nice that Carlisle runs off the road now and then. This is like a combination of pinot noir and syrah with the weight and feel of PN and some of the blackberry of syrah. Tannins were very fine and this paired well with a grilled spicy salmon filet. (1044 views)
Tasted by garambler on 10/31/2016 & rated 90 points: I had this with Mexican Rice & Beans on 10/31/16. It had a powerful, jammy bouquet of smoke, black cherry, strawberry, plum, sassafras, anise, mint and spice aromas. The palate was dense, jammy and dry with flavors of black cherry, strawberry, plum, burnt toast, pepper and spice. (1902 views)
Tasted by David_T on 10/28/2016 & rated 89 points: Red fruit - strawberry and cherry on the nose. The palate matches adding hints of earth/florals/chocolate and a fair oak influence. Light tannins and light-medium acid adds structure. (1507 views)
Tasted by BklynNeophyte on 10/16/2016 & rated 93 points: Wonderful wine. Consistent with 2 and 1/2 years ago. (1896 views)
Tasted by PIntag on 10/15/2016 & rated 86 points: I liked this wine on release almost two years ago. Now, not so much. The once big fruit is now fading (not necessarily a bad thing), but it's hollowed and the oak is sticking out pretty prominently. The flavor profile is interesting and unique (I won't attempt to describe it because I'm not very good at isolating particular aromas and flavors). (1515 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 8/21/2016 & rated 91 points: Dark strawberry fruit, pepper flavors, excellent structure, little short (1634 views)
Tasted by treidling on 7/30/2016 & rated 90 points: Still quite powerful. Decanted for about 60 to 90 minutes before it could find its balance. (1033 views)

2011 Carlisle Grand Noir Dommen Ranch

Readers ... have probably seen reference to the variety Grand Noir, or more fully, Grand Noir de la Calmette. We often find this variety, an 1855 cross of Petit Bouschet with Aramon noir, interspersed in old-vine vineyards, especially in the Russian River and Sonoma Valleys. As a teinturier (from French, meaning to dye or to tint) grape, it is red-fleshed and red-juiced (red grapes typically have clear juice) but not as deeply colored as Alicante Bouschet, another teinturier variety. There is seldom enough Grand Noir to pick and ferment separately but at Dommen Ranch, planted circa 1930 in the Russian River Valley, there are two small blocks of the variety. A veritable viticultural rarity! Being the curious type, not to mention a self-admitted grape junkie, I couldn’t resist the chance to try our hand with the fruit. What better way to learn what the variety might add to a blend!
Tasting Note: Dark ruby-garnet. An intriguing woodsy nose of pine forest, sandalwood, and spice. Smells more savory than fruity. The wine glides smoothly over the palate with spice and black pepper flavors emerging on the pleasantly tannic finish. Overall, I am reminded of a rustic but satisfying Languedoc red, appropriate since Grand Noir’s birthplace was near Montpellier in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France. Enjoy this very ageworthy wine from 2015 through 2024.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
