Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 128 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Sean Tay on 3/2/2024 & rated 96 points: Drank it along side 1983 Latour.

Decanted both wine at 1 hour, Lafite nose is impressive, with notes of flora, mushroom, spices, toast, charr wood. While Latour have notes of forest floor, spices, smoke, toast, slight barnyard.

After 2 hours of decanting. Lafite remain the same. However Latour open up and the slight barnyard had dissipated. And personally felt Latour is the better between two.

Both wine still have long years ahead, can keep. (472 views)
Tasted by LWI on 2/11/2024 flawed bottle: Middag og noen Bordeaux 80-tall: Corked (591 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 2/4/2024 & rated 94 points: Charming, elegant soft, silky, and fresh, this was quite a nice surprise. The fruits are ripe, refined, sweet, and vibrant. Medium-bodied, with a true sense of class and regal character, this is all about its charming style. No decanting needed, just pop pour and enjoy. Drink from 2024-2034. (1161 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 12/12/2023 & rated 94 points: Salon Ficofi Paris walkabout tasting and dinner, no detailed tasting notes. From Jero, cedar wood, farmyard, relatively light. Mature, drink up. (1422 views)
Tasted by BradE on 9/23/2023: From 375ml. A very good showing. Wish I had more. (1392 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 8/19/2023 & rated 90 points: A celebration of 1983: From 3L. This wasn't showing much and felt backwards throughout the night with some fruit and leather flavors on the nose. A bit thin and not that interesting on the palate. Medium finish. By far the least impressive Bordeaux tonight. (1680 views)
Tasted by ove_stammrud on 6/13/2023: Igjen en vakker Lafite med sin noble, sentimentale og elegante stil. Nesten hvitvins aktig syrefriskhet i munn. I sin egen klasse når det gjelder kompleksitet, ingenting som spriker, alt står i balanse. Vinen viser klare toner av solbær, luksus tobakk, balsamiske toner og hint av kjøtt. Drikker flott nå. (1912 views)
Tasted by bbq_grandcru on 5/11/2023 flawed bottle: Very strange VA on this bottle, the first of 12 I have opened. Hoped it would blow over with time but it did not. Not drinkable. Very hopeful this is an isolated issue. (1956 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 4/14/2023: Good showing tonight, seems like this actually could benefit from more age - tannins came across as a bit thick. (2006 views)
Tasted by Eric on 12/10/2022: ESTG Year-End Tasting (Newcastle, WA): Red fruit, lead pencil, fairly locked up, not generous, classically Lafite, mineral, reserved. (3128 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 9/17/2022 & rated 95 points: Aged gracefully with some graphite, mushrooms and still good persistence. Even decanted it held over two hours (2967 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 9/17/2022 & rated 95 points: Wonderful pencil shaving aromas here, earhty elements as well with tobacco and mushrooms. The palate was on the drying side already, so better drink this up if you have a bottle left. Aromas 96, palate 94 (3078 views)
Tasted by engelwein on 7/8/2022 & rated 91 points: Farbe leicht helles Rot - Ziegelrot. In der Nase subtil, feiner Bordeaux-Geruch. Im Mund etwas Säure (negativ!) , etwas Früchte. Recht frisch! (2573 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 5/25/2022 & rated 94 points: Another stellar showing of what an aged first growth should look like. Again, the flavor profile and finish were on target. (2720 views)
Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 11/5/2021 & rated 91 points: Best bottle (Restaurant Lion's, Stuttgart): *** brief notes for my memory, no detailed tasting notes. Wines tasted blind if not noted otherwise ***
Decanted a few hours before. Clear, deep tawny-garnet color. Clean, deep, fine, elegant nose of an aged BDX with fine tobacco and leather, but also some harsh green notes.
On the palate very elegant, good balance, elegant, rather feminine. Some green pepper, hints of red fruit. Good acidity. Lacks a bit of complexity and pressure on the palate. Drink now. 90-91
I was so surprised to see, what it was. Thanks’ to the noble donor! (3552 views)
Tasted by 559Cheers on 10/30/2021 & rated 93 points: Drinking well, geosmin initially on the nose, still a little closed. Seems a little lite on the palette. Just opened. Cork saturated. Left bank nose and palette, still needs to open up more.
*2nd night cherry on the palette, nose is not showing much. (2645 views)
Tasted by vetty on 7/27/2021 & rated 94 points: purple, leather, animal, game, velvet. Medium body. I could taste ocean, sea water in the finish. after aeration, it's getting more salty, earthy with more dried grass. (3445 views)
Tasted by Sleepy Dave on 2/22/2021: From an OWC of 3. A slight touch of funk for the first poured but quickly blew away. Very fresh and complex, just entering the maturity and in the perfect spot to drink. Dried and fresh flowers, sweet tobacco, light capsicum and cedar with a lot of small berries. It is intense and deep, but never powerful, as what I'm expecting from Lafite -> Elegance. Layer and layer of flavours, silky smooth on the palate with excellent freshness and very satisfying mid palate depth and length. A great matured Claret. (4032 views)
Tasted by doug374 on 2/17/2021 & rated 93 points: Stored well for 30 years, cork just beginning to go soft in the last inch. An elegant wine with tobacco, vanilla, and cherries on the nose. Smooth, maybe a little light and drinking well. (3470 views)
Tasted by petitblanc on 3/16/2020 & rated 91 points: Coronavirus Denial; 3/1/2020-5/31/2020: Pure black cherry from glass to nose to palate, notes of tobacco and exotic spice underneath. Very feminine, light and elegant, just a bit hot through the finish. Barely enough structure remains to keep this lively. This bottle was enjoyable with food, but past its prime. (5626 views)
Tasted by Thoughtful on 3/3/2020 & rated 92 points: Stored in a cold cellar since release. Cork very tight. Fill just below cork.Perfect condition. Restrained bouquet. Deep colour with some red.
Needed plenty of air to open out. Good depth of flavour with excellent balance Still some tannin. However lacks finesse and elegance. No real complexity in fact rather one dimensional. At least 10 years of life ahead but seems unlikely it will improve though to predict the future of claret is always hazardous! (4826 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 12/13/2019: Aromas of wet clay and graphite with plum. So pure and clean and precise. Pitch perfect, this bottle was served by a generous friend who had purchased it on release. This was one of the best, if not the best, Lafite I can recall. (5094 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 12/10/2019 & rated 92 points: Acker BYO 2019 (Tribecal Grill): Darker and younger, but also very thin. Good array of classic Pauillac notes. 92 (4683 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 11/12/2019 flawed bottle: Lafite Dinner 2019 (Blue Hill): Slightly oxidized, fruit gone, wet cupboard, void midpalate and maderized taste. Flawed. (5038 views)
Tasted by Jammy Wine on 9/7/2019 & rated 89 points: The 1983 Lafite Rothschild is drinking nicely today, offering an eloquent graphite and earth of Pauillac. Good richness with mild tobacco and a smudge of green notes. Detectable heat from the rich blooded plums and prunes. Fleshy red fruits, pencil lead. Medium bodied with graceful smoke and elegant cigar box of a textbook Lafite. However, the fruits are one dimensional with a muddled black tea note. (89/100) (3486 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
