Tasted by tward on 3/4/2024 & rated 91 points: Excellent
This seemed much more advanced than the most recent bottle consumed a year ago, March 2023. That's strange, because both were from the same purchase and were stored the same - the first 3 1/2 years after taking possession in Dec. 2014 in a home storage unit, fully dark with seasonal fluctuations low-mid-50s to mid-60s F followed by offsite store at 55 F. Hmmm...

From Coravin the first night and perhaps it came across heavy due to having sat with a glass of Morgon for an hour prior. Not exactly baked, but quite rich and not quite in balance. Since the Tablas Creek vintage chart shows mature but also wanting a decant, I did that the second night for a couple hours and have to say that while rich and soft for Tablas Esprit, it was still such a pleasure to drink. Mourvedre and Syrah showing their muscle at 40% and 30%, respectively. Some earth, eucalyptus, baking spices, dark chocolate, plum. Very nice.

I brought the remaining few bottles home into 62 F storage. Not sure if I should look to consume them all in the next year or maybe put one or two back to offsite. Thoughts welcome...

Tasted by jonahfactor on 12/10/2023: More Northern Rhône than Californian in temperament, this is drinking beautifully right now. Velvety and lush, it’s food friendly and offers nice secondary notes in addition to ample fruit. The Esprit is usually long lived. But I can’t imagine this getting any better with more age. Outstanding. (1066 views)
Tasted by MichielV on 12/3/2023 & rated 92 points: W smoked ribs (first try) from Greenegg. Ribs not perfectly cooked, but know what i did wrong (not hot and long enough). Good combo though! This wine is really excellent, ithas body freshness and length. Really good at 11 years. This will live for quite some more time - i would dare 10+ years. Didnt prep and just grabbed it from basement. (1038 views)
Tasted by jpcart on 12/1/2023: Soft cork that crumbled. Wine was still very good but felt a little oxidized. (1014 views)
Tasted by alitman on 9/20/2023 & rated 92 points: Recent TN are spot on. The wine needed 90 minutes of air then really came to life. Dark fruits, forest floor, leather, and wood. The wine has a great balance, nice acidity, and resolved tannins. The finish is long. I recently had the 2011 and this is drinking way better and is in the good drinking window. (1248 views)
Tasted by Stufts on 7/11/2023 & rated 93 points: This really came alive after about 90 minutes of breathing. Dark cherries, cedar, nutmeg, savory herbs... Classic CdP profile from the CA masters of the style. An impressively long finish added enormously to savoring this one sip by sip. In an excellent spot right now. (1374 views)
Tasted by mtaczak on 5/26/2023 & rated 93 points: drinking perfectly right now. not especially deep, but just gorgeously balanced and polished. the bottle was gone way faster than it should have been ... (1310 views)
Tasted by dino_mike on 5/20/2023 & rated 95 points: Nice purple red color and smells of strawberry, baked cherry and lots of complexity without any forest floor or barnyard (which I generally think is good) components. Smells big and rich, and delivers in taste.
Superb entry: great mouthfeel, velvety and perfect balance. Tastes of pie cherry but with soft spiciness too that keeps it fresh. The smooth and long finish is wonderful. However, the entire wine is drinking very well right now, almost... ALMOST too soft and seemless so I really think it should be DRINK NOW and don't hold it unless its in large format. (1302 views)
Tasted by Dine&Vine on 5/8/2023 & rated 93 points: Hitting its stride. Lovely chocolate covered cherry bouquet with tar, earth and worn leather flavors to complement the fruit, giving way to perfectly balanced body and enough acidity to refresh the palate.

Very well made and aged to perfection. (1418 views)
Tasted by prism on 3/26/2023 & rated 94 points: Slow O'd for 45 minutes. Initially some slight raisin overlay; it blows off in half an hour so and then the wine is rich and elegant, refreshing at the same time. (1424 views)
Tasted by tward on 3/25/2023 & rated 92 points: Excellent+. This was really nice on PnP, plumy, spiced dark fruits, zesty red currant, mid weight, almost tight, after an hour eucalyptus, bitter chocolate, turned sweet pine forest floor.

This really opened up the second night. With air more elements pop in and it becomes more and more integrated. Mourvedre is the one varietal that shows chocolate in a way I enjoy and dark chocolate / cocoa builds over time here with mint and dark raspberry and sweet earth. There's much more going on here...

I see some excellent tasters' TNs recently indicate this has passed its peak. I'm not so sure, but for now I've moved my drink by date to 2025 to encourage checking in on it again within a year.

Tasted by wilypod on 2/19/2023 & rated 90 points: Beautiful translucent garnet, silky, well-knit palate, a very pretty but not stunning wine that paired well with a ribeye roast. Most of my Esprits taste even better on Day 2 -- and the palate remained lovely on Day 2. But after 24 hours of air the aromas were in an oxidizing decline. Good for current drinking and should hold another 2-3 years. (1406 views)
Tasted by penywyse on 12/17/2022 & rated 93 points: Very nice bottle of wine. Opened this tonight to drink with a beef stew and it didn’t disappoint. The wine was not very approachable immediately after opening, however it blossomed after an hour and even 3 hours later continued to impress. The Syrah came alive and it’s portion of the blend spoke well. The color and weight of the wine is neither to light or dark. This should pair well with many foods. Drink it up as it is in a great place right now and probably not getting much better. Drink well, be healthy, and enjoy life. (1447 views)
Tasted by Bob in NC on 8/7/2022 & rated 92 points: Drank alongside a 2012 Chateau de Beaucastel. The Beaucastel outshined this Tablas Creek, but not by much. It was delicious. (1786 views)
Tasted by jaumealaska on 5/17/2022 & rated 94 points: Medium clear garnet with some age on the rim. Beautiful nose of dark cherries, plums, licorice, and a savory understory. Body is balanced with medium to resolved tannins, still fresh acidity over dark fruits and a medium long finish. Lovely with pasta and grilled ahi tuna. No rush to drink but in a great window. (1880 views)
Tasted by munktun on 5/14/2022 & rated 91 points: Cork and bottle in perfect condition, could honestly go for a few more years before peaking. Smoked meats coming through strong, a real pleasure if you still hold (1701 views)
Tasted by dlduchon on 5/9/2022 & rated 90 points: Balanced Rhône ranger, I like The Tablas style. I like the blend. Not in the overdone Paso style. Good equilibrium. (1783 views)
Tasted by larrybbaldwin on 4/9/2022 & rated 90 points: Dried fruit/ raisin/slight forest floor/earthy/barky. Great acid/mod tannins/good persistence with notes of christmas spice/fruitcake. Lovely but no where to go (1677 views)
Tasted by yatchisin on 3/8/2022 & rated 93 points: If anything this wine just gets deeper...similar notes as previous otherwise: Long, lingering, lovely--lots of deep dark fruit, some oak but very much in balance with good acidity and waves of grace notes, from black pepper to tobacco. (1748 views)
Tasted by jonahfactor on 1/22/2022: A one-hour decant puts this offering in a perfect place, ready to enjoy. Wildflowers and berries in the nose, followed by a fruit bowl of berries and dark pitted fruits on the palate, with an intriguing dash of smoke and tar in the finish. Will last another decade. But enjoy in the next two years to take advantage of the fruit and floral nuances. Worth Seeking Out. (1817 views)
Tasted by Stampeder on 1/2/2022 & rated 90 points: Got better as it opened up. Deeper flavors at this point versus drinking “young”.

Berries and cherry with some peppery and mineral tones. Consistent on the palette from start to finish. (1662 views)
Tasted by yaki on 12/25/2021 & rated 92 points: Replacement bottle kindly provided by the winery. Not decanted. Showing some early signs of maturity, with blackberry, cherry, leather and savory olive notes. Well balanced, with medium acidity and medium tannins fully integrated. (1636 views)
Tasted by GoBlue2002 on 12/14/2021 & rated 89 points: Really needed the decant time -- just flat and boring on opening.
With a decant - spice, earth, dried berries, floral on the nose.
Not much fruit here, very old world in style - also acidity on the finish with solid tannins.
Did not hit the spot tonight, although I did enjoy the floral notes. (1776 views)
Tasted by dino_mike on 10/11/2021 & rated 90 points: I opened, decanted, aerated for 3 hours, yet I did not get the same impression others who had it this year. The wine surprisingly had "structure" from the tannins. Still a great wine, 90 points and will go up, I wish I had not opened it for another 2-3 years. The upfront flavors thru mid pallet are awesome: spicy stewed strawberry, smokey blue fruits from the mourvèdre and great mouthfeel and finish until the not-so-smooth tannins say hello. I'll wait until 2024 to have my remaining bottle just to be sure. Although it still drinks well. (2192 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 9/15/2021 & rated 92 points: just a great blend where everything comes together. Drinking really well right now. (1966 views)

Tablas Creek

Producer website
Tablas Creek Vineyard, founded by the Perrin family of Chateau de Beaucastel and Robert Haas of Vineyard Brands, is dedicated to growing grape varieties traditional to France's Rhone Valley. The partners chose hilly western Paso Robles for its limestone soils, rugged terrain, and ocean influence. All Tablas Creek wines are estate grown using environmentally sustainable practices.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
