Tasted by Raage on 9/28/2023 & rated 90 points: (CdV)
(456 views)
Tasted by popasq on 10/3/2022 & rated 92 points: Very nice. (480 views)
Tasted by werner on 10/11/2020 & rated 93 points: Fabulous wine, at a perfect stage. Velvet, smooth, nice matured fruit, secondary aromas dominant, incredibly long and firm aftertaste. (1029 views)
(2119 views)
Tasted by acyso on 5/7/2016 & rated 83 points: Rite of Spring at Chevalier Wines (Chicago, IL): I really wanted to like this more, but there was such an unpleasant 2004-red-Burgundy-like streak of green to it that I couldn't. Not enough fruit and stuffing here to hold up to this husk of green acid. Not a great drink. (3204 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 5/7/2016: Chevalier Fine Wines Tasting, Featuring Fine Vines Selections (Chevalier Fine Wines - Chicago IL): Tasting, brief note. Nicely mature. Moderate weight and length. Drink up. Good enough value for a cellared wine. (3111 views)
Tasted by Yagil on 12/1/2015 & rated 91 points: Northern Rhone tasting (at Eli Raban's home, Rehovot): dark red-brown
subtle elegant dark fruits and spicy aromas with hints of earthiness seems to be closed even after few hours after double decanting
similarly on the palate , red fruits flavours, spices, graphite, medium bodied, soft firm tannins, balanced acidity; fine elegant structure & complexity, mid-length finish.
should be opened 12 hours in advance.
tasted neck to neck with 2004 M. Gerin Cote Rotie La Landonne and was a bit better (2309 views)
Tasted by Yiannis on 6/6/2015 & rated 89 points: A minor disappointment this time, especially after the magnifficent 2007 La Sereine Noir. Medium garnet colour. Shy nose with obvious greenness (green peas?) alongside red cherries, meaty scents and spices. Medium-bodied, slightly firm tannins and balancing acidity. Medium aftertaste. (2096 views)
Tasted by popasq on 12/25/2013 & rated 92 points: Great fruit, drinks very well now. (2164 views)
Tasted by joshwoodward on 9/27/2010 & rated 89 points: Popped and poured. Nice nose - quite olive-y. Disappointing on the palate, though - lean, and closed down. I like what's there, I just want more of everything, with more body. I think this will get significantly better in 5-10 years, so I'm going to sit on my other bottle for a good long while. (2619 views)
Tasted by Yiannis on 11/22/2008 & rated 94 points: Tasted at a Northern Rhone blind tasting with 4 Hermitages and 4 Cote-Roties. This was among the winners (top 3 wines) the other 2 being Guigal's Cote-Rotie Brune et Blonde 2003 and Chapoutier's Ermitage L' Ermite 2004. Already accessible but with great aging potential, showed aromas of baked blackberries, coffee, kalhua liqueur and truffles. Full bodied with rich tannins and high acidity. Long aftertaste. Bought one bottle right after the tasting. (3199 views)

Jean-Michel Gerin

Producer website - Read more about Jean Michel Gerin Rhone Wines

My previous visits with Jean-Michel Gerin have always started with an early morning, stomach-churning drive up into his vineyards in his mini-truck. This visit was different. We started with an early afternoon, stomach-churning drive up into his vineyards in his 1984 Renault, which he proudly showed only had 27,000 kilometers on it. I’ve never seen a gear shift that came out of the dashboard before. The only thing that topped the drive up was the drive down, the car groaning with each hairpin turn. Good times. In all seriousness though, it’s always great to get into the vineyards with Gerin. I’ve visited his parcel in La Viaillère now three years in a row. The first time they were rebuilding the terraces. Last year they were putting in the drainage system (run off on these steep slopes can be wild). This year the vineyard looks great, so good in fact, that Gerin will be making a separate La Viaillère cuvée from the 2007 vintage. We also looked at some hail damage (a highly centralized storm hit some of Gerin’s vineyards in June), and the vines that were hit had some damage to next year's buds. That means lower yields, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and Gerin knows he’s lucky the damage wasn’t worse. Nonetheless, despite all the difficulty in the vineyards in ’07, Gerin got wines with "huge polyphenols." A few samples tasted from tank (the wines underwent malo in tank for the first time ever here) showed gorgeous color and fresh, forward fruit notes. - James Molesworth, Wine Spectator

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Côte-Rôtie

Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The Appellation cover three communes - Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, Ampuis and Tupin-Semons - on the right Rhône river bank, within the Rhône "département".

• Soils : In the northern part of the vineyard, the Côte Brune, consists of extremely steep, terraced slopes of ferruginous mica schists which are covered with schist sand (arzel). The Côte Blonde has a varied geology with gneiss and granite predominating at the most southern side of the appellation.

• Climate : tempered continental. Dry, hot summers and frequent rainfalls during the other seasons. History : one of the oldest vineyards in France, first developed by the Romans. It is said that during the Middle Ages, "The Seigneur de Maugiron" bequeathed a hillside to each of his daughters, one was brunette and the other fair. Thus, were born the names of "Côte Brune" and "Côte Blonde".

• Area planted : 230 hectares (568 acres), for an annual production of 8,400 hectoliters (93,333 cases). Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2,3 US tons/acre).

• Grape Varieties : Syrah (80% minimum). An addition of up to 20% of Viognier grapes in the crop is allowed.
