Tasted by SeattlePaul on 12/7/2023: Tasted multiple times from Coravin, not quite coming together the way I'd hoped it would show. (262 views)
Tasted by J_H on 8/5/2023 & rated 90 points: - Open and accessible, with red fruits, wild cherries and redcurrants at the forefront. However, the nose is a little too woody.
- High acidity and present tannins on the palate. Needs more time, but probably will not get the turnaround to make fun. In my humble opinion it lacks fruit. And that would be important for ageing.
- 90 points (205 views)
Tasted by Mark Bostock on 2/21/2021: Gaja Dagromis Barolo is made from 100% Nebbiolo sourced from vineyards in Serralunga and La Morra. Gaja is one of the best Italian names. (2064 views)
Tasted by wineappreciation on 12/20/2020 & rated 91 points: Blackberry, tar, roses; smooth, structured, a little tight but gradually opening; very good (1932 views)
Tasted by Winedog1 on 7/3/2019 & rated 96 points: From my perspective, this is significantly underrated in CT. The wine is drinking perfectly, with tremendous flavor and a long finish. My tasting note is really a question to other Barolo and Barbaresco lovers: if this is only a 91+, what labels are better? Please provide me your recommendations. (3045 views)
Tasted by Harrie on 4/21/2019 flawed bottle: Corked. (2613 views)
Tasted by flah00 on 3/25/2017 & rated 91 points: Tar and flowers on the nose, but still very tannic. Had with some grilled lamb, which helped even out the tannins. (5211 views)
(5033 views)
Tasted by nmichaud1 on 2/22/2016 & rated 91 points: Tres bon Barolo (5646 views)
Tasted by Etienne U3R on 2/21/2016 & rated 81 points: Très gouteux. Ne pas boire en premier mais très bien fini. Se goute au palet. Encore un peu jeune. Un peu sec. (4886 views)
Tasted by SiR on 1/16/2016 & rated 92 points: 14.5% - Clear, med ruby / clean, pronounced intensity - sour cherry, licorice, dried petals, forest floor, tobacco and leather, eucalyptus / dry, med to high acidity, full body, high grippy tannin, pronounced intensity, med to long length. Very concentrated, young and tight on the palate. 92 now and certainly more in 5-10 years from now. (4937 views)
Tasted by Happykost on 12/21/2015 & rated 91 points: Garnet red, delicate body, simple structure, soft and elegant tannins, medium finish. Nice wine with bad QPR (50€) (2994 views)
Tasted by AV2012 on 12/15/2015 & rated 91 points: Barolo - BYO blind: Initially feek of a young and woody NW style red. Juicy, cranberries in powdered sugar, dark fruits, dried fruits, prunes, suede like forest floor. Biting tannin, covers all mouth. Nose is not yet as open as one would like. Excellent, but surely one should wait on this wine. (2665 views)
Tasted by hebill on 11/15/2015 & rated 92 points: Really nice and really young. Loads of cherry on nose with rose petals and a bit of leather. Similar palate, long mineral finish with earthy notes. Acidity and tannin to give it a long life. Decanted for 7 hours and still just a baby. Ideally, try another in 5 years. (1883 views)
Tasted by Umay Ceviker on 7/8/2015 & rated 92 points: Pale garnet coloured. Opulent aromas of sour cherry mixed with leather and tobacco and spicy undertones. The velvety texture matches perfectly with the strong backbone. Long, rich and caressing. (2436 views)
Tasted by rlove on 3/21/2015 & rated 92 points: DaGromis is produced with grapes from two old vineyards: one in Serralunga adjacent to Sperss and one in La Morra adjacent to Conteisa. Nose of cherry, cedar, and wet leaves. Suffering from the marginal vintage, drink now through 2020. (2875 views)
Tasted by JohanOhman on 1/24/2015 & rated 92 points: Jättegod Barolo som behöver luft för att verkligen leverera. Efter två timmar i karaff är den härligt fruktig, med tuffa härliga tanniner. Hög kvalitet! 92-93p

Give this wonderful barolo some time in the decanter and enjoy. (2923 views)
Tasted by DemeesterWim on 12/29/2014 & rated 92 points: Very nice barolo, wouldn't expect less form GAJA (3109 views)
Tasted by karl.1480 on 9/15/2014 & rated 90 points: (at Barolo Friends, Barolo)

Pale ruby color.

Layers of red berries on the developing nose. Some rose petals, spices and acetone. Delicate and elegant.

Med+ body and acidity with high tannins. Youthful and a bit tight on the palate. Some cooked red berries on the mid and spices on the med+ finish. Very pure and high quality Barolo but this one needs aging. (3157 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 9/3/2014: Tasting at Corkscrew Museum (Corkscrew Museum in Barolo): Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of sweet red cherries, and strawberries. Youthful.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, fine high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavor intensity, with flavours of red cherry, strawberry, and spice. Long finish.
Very good quality. Very young now. Will need another 10 years to develop.
Mix of vineyards from La Morra and Serralunga. (3701 views)
Tasted by RickyT12 on 8/10/2014 & rated 93 points: Wow I was pleasantly surprised with this wine. 93+

Gaja

Producer website

Located in the Tuscany and Piedmont regions of Italy, Gaja makes collectible Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay wines, including the Langhe Conteisa label. Gaja wines are among the highest-rated in all of Italy. It is perhaps best known for its Super Tuscans, which are some of the most elegant on the market. However, the estate also makes top-quality wines rooted in Italian tradition, such as Barbaresco. It is perhaps the most lauded Barbaresco producer today.

Although the estate produces 18 different wines, the production is low at just 350,000 bottles per year, making these wines very rare. The best Gaja vintages include 2018, 2016, and 2015 as well as historically well-performing vintages such as 2013, 2011, 2010, 2008, 2004, and 2003. Many of Gaja’s best vintages have received perfect scores from critics

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
