Tasted by dsimmons on 10/8/2022 & rated 95 points: At a tasting with friends shared a bottle of this amazing 21 year old Zin. Nothing tired about this bottle. It was amazingly bright and fresh with elegant fruit flavors that were very claret like. I would have never expected this. Bravo Mike O! (513 views)
Tasted by Vinoevelo on 3/14/2016: from memory - astonished by how fresh and lively this was. on the more feminine side of zinfandel, high toned fruits and ruby translucent. Lots of spice/underbrush on the nose. Still not much tertiary development (my cellar leans to the colder side)- I suspect well stored bottles of this could get even better in a few years time. wonderful zin. (696 views)
Tasted by Drankthewholebottle on 1/30/2016 & rated 92 points: From a magnum of unknown provenance the wax capsule had some slight hairline cracks; the top half of the cork broke off and the bottom crumbled in to the bottle. Filtered into a carafe the wine looked great for its age showing nice clarity without brown, there was a small amount of sediment left on side the bottle. Smelled like cherries and fragrant spice. The fruit was like currants and savory blackberry. There was no hint of the 16.1 percent alcohol. Past peak but the petit sirah held it together and kept it yummy. It went well with our middle eastern dinner. (750 views)
Tasted by tarheel17 on 5/2/2009 flawed bottle: nose: bright, sweet cherry fruit. Almost candied. Perhaps a bit of mint, too? Very nice, in any case.
palate: not nearly as sweet as the nose suggests (thankfully). NIcely put together, but a little flat and papery on the finish. Just OK. Possibly slightly tainted with TCA. Bah humbug (1512 views)
Tasted by MarkC on 4/8/2006 & rated 91 points: Wow - this is not showing any age whatsoever. Incredible nose and palate. Somewhat monolithic - mostly dark fruits - but intense, rich, mouthcoating, unctuous - take your pick of descriptors. There was almost an element of something "overripe," but it didn't detract at all from the wine. Hard for me to believe this is a Zin from the '01 vintage given how youthful it is. (2017 views)
Tasted by ragtop1967 on 9/9/2005 & rated 90 points: Time to start working through a few of the 01's with the next shipment of the 03's coming soon. What a nose, dark fruits and a hint of charred oak. On the palate, the PS really comes through. This is just fun. Very smooth; 2 more to go and I wonder how long they will last. (2257 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 9/5/2005: Coming from the '01 vintage, felt it was time to run another one of these out and divorce it from the other bottle that still sleeps in the cellar. The nose changed over time, starting with some nice jammy fruit and then later showing that, plus some mocha/chocolate scented oak. On the palate, nice black raspberry with some anise and a nice core of earthy black fruit which over time grew more round and full bodied. The 16.1% octane does not really show and there are still some nice acids left on the wine to keep it going. This was a nice drink and I loved the long finish. (1781 views)
Tasted by blgros on 6/5/2005: What a great wine. Rich, deep dark color. Great aroma of dark fruit, spice. Fruit on the palate has become muted, but the spice is forward, moderate body and pretty long finish. Rich and great depth of flavor. (1470 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 4/5/2005: ($30) Wow! Nose here. A potent concoction of blueberry and blackberry fruit. Low acid, supple and pure. Beautiful stuff. No sense of the wine's 16% alcohol. Very hedonistic. (670 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 1/4/2004: ($30) 16.1% alcohol. Interesting nose - primary and grapey. Just oozes with crushed blackberries. Doesn't even hint at its alcohol level. Rich sweet concentrated fruit. Like blackberry juice at times. Yum! (697 views)

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
