Community Tasting Notes (average 93.8 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 48 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 1/5/2024 & rated 94 points: [Blind] Elegant, pretty, red cherry. Concentrated red fruit power on the palate. Nuanced and detailed though, I thought deceptively youthful but actually just a little young. Very nice. (404 views)
Tasted by Tao on 9/20/2023 & rated 99 points: Good gracious Lord, this is insanely beautiful!! The aroma, the intensity of the rosy red fruits and more importantly, the subtlety of the fruits, driving me crazy! Beautifully judged, beautifully made! (551 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 9/9/2022 & rated 93 points: 200 Burgundy Grand Crus from vintage 2000, 4-day blind tasting (Singapore): Borderline oxidative, very mature, not in the best shape. Still drinkable, probably not a representative bottle (2853 views)
Tasted by drjb on 8/25/2022 & rated 95 points: At Pitchfork, Peregian. This wine shows a deep cherry red colour with touches of edge browning and a complex nose of dark cherries, wild strawberries, all-spice, game and limestone earth. The palate is gracefully aged with a balance of red berry fruits and autumn forest floor and ceps in a medium bodied setting. The finish is fine and persists nicely with a savoury and finely tannic impact. Delicious ! (1205 views)
Tasted by BenBlu on 5/19/2022 & rated 95 points: A wonderful mature wine, drank in a flight of 07 Beze Rousseau, the contrast was stark. Here (07) the exuberant youthfullnes and there (00) the settled mature pinot experience. The 2000 surely was superb, it lacked on reflection though the potential for further upside and also lacked a bit of depth on the midpalate for me. On its own a wonderful display of near pinot perfection just in comparison with five other vintages and especially the other mature samples (89 & 90) lacking a bit. That being said I would be happy to drink this any day with immense joy. Drink now - 2035. (1612 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 9/29/2021 & rated 95 points: Clean and well articulated. Bright fruit to this bottle. (1884 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 8/27/2021 & rated 94 points: Showing a lot of high quality red fruit, this bottle had not yet developed its full range of secondaries. Somewhat more expressive with some airtime. 94+ (1791 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 8/18/2021 & rated 93 points: Somewhat underwhelming bottle, without great clarity or energy. Good fruit here. (1424 views)
Tasted by drjb on 4/10/2021 & rated 94 points: At Winston, Noosa. This wine shows a deep cherry red colour with touches of edge browning and a nose of dark cherries, wild strawberries, all-spice, game and limestone earth. The palate is gracefully aged with a balance of fruit and autumn forest floor and ceps in a medium bodied setting. The finish is fine and quite persistent. A great example of Rousseau refinement and balance in a lighter year. (1615 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 1/27/2021 & rated 94 points: Well balanced dark berry, soil and floral elements. Great material here, just needs more time. 94+ (1741 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Mitch on 6/28/2020 & rated 94 points: Terrific bottle, drank at MS's celebrating 20th anniversary and belated BD and First post-Covid wine dinner. Medium to light bodied, ethereal, iron fist in velvet glove. Wish I had more. (1619 views)
Tasted by _water.into.wine_ on 5/24/2020 & rated 94 points: Quite a few notes saying this has been hit and miss of late, but this was singing from the get-go. Bright Ruby. Fruit forward. Structured red fruits. Strawberries. Tannic. Lots and lots of savory (the dominant aroma) with some nutmeg. Give this 10 years. Shared by Ayub (1582 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 5/15/2020: Underwhelming and did not show well versus the Chambertin. Certainly not a perfect bottle. (1647 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/7/2020 & rated 94 points: La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY): Small glass, brief note. Rich black fruited flavors with impressive depth and roasted meat, then a hint of dark chocolate covered cherries on the finish. (2640 views)
Tasted by acheng on 2/28/2020 & rated 94 points: PnP generously at an impromptu gathering after dinner. Very interesting to compare against the 00 Ruchotte from the same producer I had from several years ago which was more open. It took a while for the CdB to unfurl and strut its stuff. That it did eventually. Raspberry and cherry and a depth of flavour reflectively of its pedigree. Alas, it was getting late in the evening for the aromatic fireworks to make more of an impression. I do think the Echezeaux has even greater complexity. (1389 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 9/17/2019 & rated 95 points: Wonderful aroma with herbs, spice, citrus, mocha, berries, and leather. So silky and elegant with weightless power. Despite a weaker vintage, it had the strength and depth with an ethereal feel. Drinking well with long life ahead. (1930 views)
Tasted by BradE on 5/10/2019: Like the 00 Chambertin, a delicious wine, if not the rock star that Rousseau can be. (1938 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 3/25/2019 & rated 94 points: Domaine Armand Rousseau - Chambertin and Clos de Beze Dinner (Imperial Treasure Shanghai, Ngee Ann City, Singapore): Wow. This was seriously good. It had a killer nose, with wonderfully fragrant wafts of flowers and spice, sweet red cherries, earth, bramble, and just that bit of meatiness. Wow - this was sweet perfume and Gevrey meatiness all rolled into one, a real kaleidoscope of Burgundy magic. The palate may not have been as gobsmackingly impressive as the nose, but it was deliciously soft and lovely, with the finest-boned tannins framing beautifully pure flavours of red fruit, earth, mineral and spice. Wonderfully defined and transparent, with pure Gevrey character showing throughout. It just lacked a touch of power and length of the greatest vintages, but this clearly had Grand Cru presence even so. The finish drifted away without the greatest conviction, but rather a charming wink, as it lingered with notes of earth, bramble and mineral on the back palate. A beautifully elegant wine, drinking at peak now. (1694 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 10/19/2018 & rated 93 points: Good cork - c15% soaked.
Mature appearance - pale/medium mahogany/garnet core, wide pale mahogany rim. Nose is quite complex, autumnal, gently spicy, touch of earth and mushroom, underlying red fruit. Medium bodied on the palate, spicy, gently savoury, red fruited - more prominent than on the nose - fully resolved tannins, vibrant acidity, quite long finish with a touch of mushroom. Fully mature, don't really see any point keeping though it will probably be Ok for another 3-5 yrs. Excellent, may just about be worth the £100 paid for it (2007) ;-) (2127 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 2/4/2018 & rated 93 points: Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Bèze: 1964 - 2014 (Per Se): Pretty nose, expressive, but a touch thin if critical. Not the ‘02, ‘01 or ‘99, but very nice and a good example of the terroir and the domaine style. Clean and pure. Palate has lush fruit and good acid. Good right now, but I've always had a bit of a soft spot for '00 red burgundy. (3123 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 9/26/2017 & rated 93 points: fuller and richer than the Chambertin served side by side. this had ok depth, some meaty character to go with the dark cherry fruit. was not blown away (2747 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 8/22/2017 & rated 93 points: Austere and tight with dark fruit and abundant dark soil notes. Begrudgingly gives up spice notes, both sweet and savory, with air time. Moderate length finish. Just needs more time. 93-94 (2559 views)
Tasted by Sleepy Dave on 3/27/2017: Sweet sour cherry, raspberry and white currant intermixed w earth that show a touch of wildness. Excellent acidity lift to the ripe fruits. Majestic and classy, with real intensity and depths. Refined tannin, firm but rounded and silky smooth. Incredible long. Pure pleasure. (2027 views)
Tasted by clayfu on 2/19/2017: Night two: No more rain but a lot more Rousseau - a story of Fred's birthday in Orange County (J Zhou): Powerful brutish wine on the palate. Full of dark concentrated fruit. It needs more time as there is still plenty of tannin on the back end. Classic meaty bloody red fruit on the nose but not nearly as expressive as the 00 chambertin next to it. (3973 views)
Tasted by Rani on 12/29/2016 & rated 92 points: Notes of burnt rubber, violets and red and black berries. Powerful in the mouth. Cool blue fruit, hint of soy. I preferred the Chambertin over this one, slightly. (2488 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
