Tasted by Jdwinedrinker on 4/18/2017: Drinking nice at 13 yrs old.

A little bit of a roasted fruity flavor but not too much. I like it. (1112 views)
Tasted by davidspieker on 3/17/2013 & rated 89 points: Dark garnet color with nice viscosity. Aromas of dark fruit and camphor. A power house. Very ripe dark fruit flavors with with lots of alcohol. Having said that, it's well integrated with a very lengthy and pleasant finish. Can't imagine a food pairing. (2744 views)
Tasted by affordableCollector on 3/11/2013 & rated 91 points: clear, ruby, in color. dark fruit, blueberry, smoke, vanilla, toast, cedar, oak, on the nose. mild acid, medium tannins, on this delicious finish. (2587 views)
Tasted by cookie7 on 10/30/2012: Pop and pour - note after 2 hours. Blackberries and licorice on the nose. This opened up with a bit of air, showing lots of black fruit, spice and pepper. Fruit seems to be fading and a bit of heat on the finish. Nice wine but I don't see a reason to hold on to it. (2861 views)
Tasted by jbposell on 12/22/2011 & rated 93 points: My oldest Carlisle and a real testament to the ageability of Mike's wines. Awesomesauce! (3490 views)
Tasted by BigTarheel on 12/13/2011 & rated 89 points: Good but showed a little lighter with less pronounced flavors. (2594 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 8/7/2011 & rated 95 points: I hate last bottles, especially when the wine is drinking as beautifully as the '04 Three Birds. Absolutely delicious with moose stroganoff. Double decanted about 3 hours before dinner. The color was a light ruby with a slight hint of age. Both the nose and the palate showed very nice fruit and spice with a little earthiness and leather. The wine was very elegant and perfectly balanced though not particularly complex. This is the best of the three bottles I have had. I have to believe it is drinking at its peak; but alas, I have no bottles remaining to test that theory )-: (1648 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 5/1/2011: Very solid wine, congrats and thanks to Mike. (1427 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 1/28/2011: This is still drinking really well. Lots of fruit, still some strong alcohol, not old and past its prime. Tell the bestjetsfan that I may have my next bottle during the Steeler-Packers Super Bowl, if I'm not being a real man and drinking Iron City... (1496 views)
Tasted by BigTarheel on 1/26/2011 & rated 90 points: Fruit forward with nicely texture ... drinking well now but might hold for a few years. Slightly hot finish is the only negative. (1488 views)
Tasted by goofy Yno on 8/21/2010: found this lost in the back of my cellar and thought I'd take it for a ride. I seem to enjoy it last time. This was a whole new experience. Ok if ya like alcohol. that was most of what I got. a bit of fruit and a lot of heat. too bad (1893 views)
Tasted by zheem on 5/4/2010: WOTN amidst many great wines. No notes, but every one's favorite. Very solidly in a good drinking window. (1745 views)
Tasted by kenv on 5/22/2009 & rated 93 points: Wonderful nose of black berries, coffee, and chocolate. Thick, silky, rich red and black fruits. Long, appealingly tannic finish of plums and blackberries. Terrific wine right from the pop and pour. Drinking beautifully now, but should drink well for 6-8 years more. Terrific with hamburgers. Amy and Eli both like it quite a bit.
Open 2 hours: Only getting better. Impressively long finish. Showing more cocoa in the nose with a hint of lilies. (2287 views)
Tasted by smokie on 5/2/2009 & rated 91 points: Awesome nose, almost zin-like but with a bit of CDP without the funk. Intense fruit, dark and long. Will be better in a year or two, but ok to drink now. (2300 views)
Tasted by WetRock on 3/14/2009: The Generosity of Steve Nordhoff Blind (Antonello Ristorante): Very soft nose. The attack is very brightly fruited, young and sweet but the palate feels thick and very tannic towards the end with some oak showing through. Clearly in need of more sleep. (3579 views)
Tasted by Paul Lin on 3/14/2009 & rated 91 points: Steve's Blind Tasting (Antonello Ristorante - Costa Mesa, CA): The nose on this wine reminds me of a bakery with notes of fresh pastry, toast, blueberries, plums, and dark chocolate. Rich and ripe on the palate but balanced by a mouthwatering acidity. 91-92 points. (2879 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 3/14/2009: Hanging With Stevie N and The OC Gang, Doing It Blind (Antanello's In Costa Mesa (Orange County)): I intially thought syrah with the zippy blueberry and oak notes. Some chalk, espresso and dark chocolate and a touch of heat. For me, not ready and put it away for another 3 years to let the structure soften. (2950 views)
Tasted by J @ y H @ c k on 1/30/2009 & rated 92 points: WOW. This is an outstanding wine with complex fruits and spices. Popped and poured then drunk over 3 hours. Nose is cherry. Color is dark but still red not black. Palate is cherry and raspberry fruit with pepper and other "generic" spice. There was even a bit of CNDP leather and earth, but that might have been imaginary. Long finish. Nice mouth feel. Smooth without being creamy. No apparent oak. (2535 views)
Tasted by budman on 1/28/2009 & rated 93 points: Amazing wine. Translucent red... long thin legs. This bottle simply exploded with smooth red fruit.
Each glass was a different experience. Complex, with smooth mouthfeel and long finish. (2366 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 1/13/2009 & rated 95 points: Holy cow, what a delicious bottle of wine. This may be the best bottle of Carlisle that I have had. Beautiful ruby garnet color. Aroma's of liquid cherry, deep black fruit, hint of spice, vinyl(in a good way), and a touch of pepper. The wine explodes on the palate with complex and balanced flavors. Creamy cherry, spice, brooding dark fruits, glycerin. Layers of complex fruitiness. Long finish which lingers a long time. This wine is hitting on all 8 cylinders and I am here to tell you it don't get any better than this. I sould have probably rated this wine higher but don't want to get branded a Carlisle whore.
To boot the wine was an insane QPR. Bravo!!!! (2469 views)
Tasted by pgordon62 on 12/28/2008 & rated 88 points: Immediately after opening this was rather dull and simple. The next day it had blossumed with intense smoky raspberry, strawberry, a dusty minerality and game plus a little baking spice. The gamyness really expanded on the medium bodied palate. The lively finish had great length and clarity (helped by a little fine grain tannin) but there was a little heat and elevated acid. Nice but again confirms the earlier vintages to be superior.  Tasted by jerhardt on 12/22/2008 & rated 85 points: Thin and very hot. Not my style. (2481 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 12/11/2008: Big wine. Good stuff (2492 views)
Tasted by otisabdul on 11/27/2008 & rated 90 points: Rich and luscious, with bold ripe fruit and glyceridic mouthfeel. A big wine with 15.7% alcohol. Overwhelmed the turkey a bit, but stood up to the salty ham. (2422 views)
Tasted by Dave Mci on 8/11/2008: Brought to a neighbor's BBQ - drank very well. (2780 views)

2004 Carlisle Three Birds

Winemaker's Note for the 2004 Sonoma County "Three Birds" Red Wine

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
