Community Tasting Notes (average 94.9 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 46 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by rgawlowski on 7/15/2022 & rated 94 points: An excellent wine, but in a strange sense at the end of its cycle; opens up with a great classic nose, great color, great balance, Bordeaux like style … then it devolves into something else. (1080 views)
Tasted by Peech on 3/4/2022 & rated 91 points: drank 45 minutes after decanting. Definitely woodsy, a little smoked meats, potpourri, plum, reasonably fragrant. Plenty of acidity. (1091 views)
Tasted by Jack on 7/7/2021 & rated 98 points: Not enough time to open up. Pnp and was consumed in an hour. Still excellent. (1710 views)
Tasted by Peech on 7/2/2021 & rated 92 points: pretty ripe on the nose with stewed prunes. Acidity was on the high side but tannins were still present on the palate. Nose was very fragrant with lovely spices and woodsy notes. Still very tannic even after decanting for 1½ hours. (1567 views)
Tasted by Peech on 2/1/2020 & rated 92 points: still concentrated, with notes of grilled meats and good, ripe fruit. Slightly ripe and sweet on the palate. (1522 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 10/4/2019 & rated 94 points: Tasted blind. I thought it to be a Syrah dominated GSM from Central California (or even a Napa Syrah) due to its aromatic opulence and intensity. The very soft, feminine structure would have been the hint for the high Grenache content. This was one of the best reds of the night and is at a very good point but with plenty of life left. 94 points not reaching the elusive 95+ points category as the nose couldn't keep up with the palate.

TN: Soft, round herbal driven nose with slight hints of petrol. Much more layered and interesting on the very well-defined palate full of fresh herbs, some roasted herbs, lots of mint, eucalyptus, spices and cola all circling around very sweet dark and red fruit core. Despite the boldness of the aromas, the wine is soft, round and elegant with melted tannins and a good freshness. Very good balance.

Decanting: Not decanted, no extensive decant needed. (2457 views)
Tasted by sirpat00 on 9/12/2019 & rated 95 points: Tasted blind. Red berries of strawberry and raspberry, barnyard and leather. Came across slightly flat initially but improved (a lot) over time adding more pronounced leathery aromas, a bit of spices and a few herbs and pepper. Fresh and balanced palate, elegantly structured and leaves the impression of a lot more aging potential. Once more testament to the aging potential and quality of Spanish juice. (2151 views)
Tasted by robmatic on 8/24/2018 & rated 95 points: Dusty, earthy, mineral, with a touch of funk on the nose. Huge palate presence, with lively and dense dark fruits, piercing acidity, and plenty of soft tannin. Full of character and charm, and drinking wonderfully now. Powerful, elegant, and a delight to drink. Still a favorite. (2011 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 5/25/2018 & rated 90 points: This is actually quite nice, cool blue and black fruit, brooding, but fairly pretty. Comparable to the '97, which I liked the most out of the tasting: This nose has a whiff of Brett which quickly blows off and shows a ripe and lush blackberry with rich soil influence. Very ripe and a little hot. Palate is very ripe but has a fun brambly texture. This smells like a middle aged very rustic St. Estephe Bordeaux, although on the palate it is much softer upfront and finishes with an out of balance wallop of alcohol. (2592 views)
Tasted by jsebiri on 3/30/2018: Very nice in a claret sort of way. 2 hour air time. I had this wine a few times in the past 5-10 years and it is in a better place today than previously. Really nice. (2424 views)
Tasted by Peech on 1/12/2018 & rated 86 points: decanted 1½ hours prior to serving. Initially nose of stewed fruits, a little lighter than expected, with smoky meats. Rather disappointing. (690 views)
Tasted by Jack on 11/16/2017 & rated 98 points: Incredible. Everything in balance and just a joy to drink! (2320 views)
Tasted by MC on 9/21/2017: PNP. Big, dark, brooding, slightly roasted. Better on day two, actually. This needs time but is just not my favorite style, as I prefer several CDPs to this. Quality is there, but not for me. A- (2264 views)
Tasted by Jack on 1/21/2017 & rated 97 points: These are amazing! (2439 views)
Tasted by Jack on 1/12/2017 & rated 98 points: Stunning! Lots of life left but perfect balance now. (2201 views)
Tasted by tomoem on 10/6/2016 & rated 98 points: Tasted at the WINEBID.COM 20th anniversary NYC tasting.

My WOTN & one of the greatest wines I have recently had. First impressions were dark colored fruits held together by a core stewed meats. Leads quickly to dark cherry sweetness which lasts over 1 minute. The flavor literally will not leave the palette. An awesome wine which I am fortunate to have brought home thanks to Sterling from Winebid.com.

This is better on day 2. Tasted from a magnum (2469 views)
Tasted by Jack on 12/26/2014 & rated 96 points: Beautiful. (3220 views)
Tasted by Jack on 11/28/2014 & rated 98 points: Beautiful. (3006 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 9/21/2014 & rated 98 points: Beautiful meaty nose, roasted bacon fat, ripe strawberries, cigar box, hint of smoke... super silky tannins with ripe strawberries, sappy acidity goes on for 30 seconds! (3080 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 1/25/2014 & rated 95 points: Dinner at bolt. Decanted for 2 hours at home and rebottled. Still inky purple in color this definitely benefitted from the decanting. Explosive with dark cherries and chocolate dominating. Gritty but unobtrusive tannins and a nice acidic backbone that was clearly tHere but not in the way. Great wine that easily has 10-15 more years of great drinking ahead of it but sadly our only bottle. 50+13+14+9+9=95 (3177 views)
Tasted by jsebiri on 12/25/2013: older initially , pruney again , i think this is one of those wines that needs to be open for 3-4 hours if it is to be very good , or maybe its just not very good .....pleasant enough (2874 views)
Tasted by jsebiri on 2/5/2012: really nice red wine.......a very stewed , pruney nose that blew off after about an hour.......lots of mature fruit , solid tasting wine .....good stuff (3723 views)
Tasted by robmatic on 12/4/2011 & rated 97 points: I make no apologies. This is one of my favorites, and this bottle did not disappoint. Actually, it was rather thrilling, with intense chocolatey tannins, and layers of mineral driven dark fruits. Decanted 2 hours, it still was quite youthful and vibrant. It's obviously very far from going over the hill, but I don't see how it could get any better. (3999 views)
Tasted by Sovinator on 11/24/2011 & rated 96 points: Wonderful wine. Dark fruit, cedar, spice and sense of terroir . Mature and drinking well now, with soft tannins. Last bottle unfortunately. (3319 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 6/4/2011 & rated 95 points: Iberian Dinner (w/ Clos Erasmus) @ Home (CT): Vigorous, youthful, rugged and holding more in reserve. Blue fruits, plums, charcoal, stones and iron shavings. Good length and still quite tannic; leaves a slightly drying impression in the mouth. I would opt to hold onto this for a bit longer. CLOS I TERRASSES
Priorat
Clos I Terrasses was born in 1989, when current Priorat legends Alvaro Palacios and Rene Barbier persuaded their friend Daphne Glorian to do something crazy: spend all her savings on some old Garnacha vines planted on 17 terraces of hillside vines, just outside the village of Gratallops. They thought they might just make a decent bottle of wine out of it, but Priorat’s reputation as a region for fine wines was yet to be established. The first 10 vintages were made at Barbier’s Clos Mogador, until Daphne purchased an old cellar from Palacios. The wines have gone from strength to strength, mixing the characteristic dense fruit, exotic spice and licorella minerality with a freshness and elegance that sets the wine apart from many of this grand appellation.

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
