Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.9 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 61 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by KVM on 9/9/2023: Brilliant dark red. Smells of cassis and cedar. The fresh, fruit forward palate seems athletic with proper flesh on a solid frame. Lovely with dinner tonite (415 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 3/28/2023: Funny, was the wine of the night, and wine of the second night as well. Robust, black fruited and right in prime form right now. No reason to wait. (755 views)
Tasted by KVM on 11/16/2022: Very dark red. Sweet black fruit and oak nose. The initial impression on the palate is of sweet fruit and oak and as it finishes it is cloying. It did not show well next to the more chiseled 2014 Pape Clement.
The leftover half bottle was even more makeup-forward 24 hours later. (787 views)
Tasted by bin905 on 5/22/2022 & rated 91 points: Dried spice and rose scent. Somewhat lean style with plenty of structure. Kirsch, tar and black cherry flavor with ample fine tannins and a long finish. (1018 views)
Tasted by KVM on 3/27/2022: another good bottle (1175 views)
Tasted by KVM on 2/6/2022: Dark red. Cassis tobacco, cedar. Lovely, soft tannin. Very ready. (1127 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 10/25/2021: Funny, after all the barbera people found this a bit too big. And these were people who I thought liked big wine! (1321 views)
Tasted by bin905 on 10/3/2021 & rated 87 points: Dry tannins overpower the other flavors. (1070 views)
Tasted by bin905 on 10/10/2020 & rated 91 points: Zippy, racy. (1680 views)
Tasted by DB Lawton on 6/26/2020 & rated 91 points: Last bottle of a big night. Really happy with this one. Good structure & fruit. I get the oak, but thought it was in line and complimentary. (1815 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 5/14/2020: Big black delicious fruit on the nose. And still has it on the palate. (2351 views)
Tasted by taylorcoleman on 11/15/2019: Good. Little on the sweet aide (2417 views)
Tasted by samiamx_1999 on 8/11/2019 & rated 89 points: Solid but uninspiring. Wood. (2749 views)
Tasted by OTTMJ on 5/3/2019 & rated 88 points: Very restrained with light tannins. Cherry prominently displayed. Short aftertaste and balanced acidity. Refreshing style compared to a lot of oaky bombastic Cali cabs but lacking that extra gear to make it something I’d seek out. (2192 views)
Tasted by sfwinelover1 on 4/21/2019 & rated 89 points: I won this bottle at a conference a couple of years ago. I've occasionally bought WH's cabs and merlots in the past, although it's been several years I've done so. This wine is medium colored, not much of a nose with cherries as the primary note, not much by way of legs. On a first taste, the wine is medium bodied with most prominent notes of sweet, dark cherries. With a bit more attention, there are more subdued notes of semi-sweet berries, earth, oak and blood orange finished with coffee and slightly astringent tannins. Little to no acidity. Pleasant and easy to drink, but not particularly interesting or complex. The relatively subdued fruit and lack of acidity makes it unlikely that this will develop further, but should stay quite drinkable for at least a few years. At a price range from the low $30s to low $40s according to winesearcher, I think one can do better (BV Tapestry, St. Clement Oroppas) with some detective work. (2548 views)
Tasted by KVM on 11/22/2018: Restrained and elegant compared to other napa cabs being poured tonight. (2483 views)
Tasted by bin905 on 9/28/2018 & rated 90 points: Sweet flower and baking spice scent. Rich and powerful black cherry, coffee, anise and tobacco flavor with plentiful fine tannins. (2380 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 6/8/2018: Black fruit and with big structure to it. Just opened and powerful. (2590 views)
Tasted by Joe Kane on 6/8/2018: fresh fruit with nice earth and herbal note. Deep purple flowers, super good for the price, always liked it! (2630 views)
Tasted by passion4wine on 4/18/2018 & rated 90 points: Nice medium-bodied Cabernet with blackberry and bing cherry with a hint of earth and eucalyptus. Slightly tight with a bit of dust. Not much going on, yet enjoyable. (2600 views)
Tasted by ohne_musik on 4/17/2018 & rated 87 points: Pretty restrained black fruit on the nose. Medium bodied, above average acid (for Napa cab), blackcurrant and dusky plum, a tinge of orange orchard fruit, pipe tobacco, some overt French oak, a hint of sweetness on the end restrained by astringent unripe persimmon-esque tannins. Not super extracted, but a good food friendly wine and holds its 14.2% ETOH quite well. By day 2, palate has softened and is largely unmemorable. (2359 views)
Tasted by wineotim on 12/7/2017 & rated 90 points: The oak influence is there, but the balance, depth, and finish make it worthy. Tasted at ABC. (3588 views)
Tasted by Baron Slick on 11/17/2017 & rated 91 points: Such a confident wine. It's so appealing for its cassis, crushed blackberries, cherries, fancy oak, and hint of bell pepper aromas. Fleshy, deep, and intense in the mouth, with a creamy texture, firm tannin, and tasty currants on the finish. Delicious, mouth filling, and ready to roll. (2609 views)
Tasted by kmwesley on 10/28/2017 & rated 90 points: Needs to lay down for another year or two. (2781 views)
Tasted by tomoem on 5/20/2017 & rated 88 points: Disappointing experience but yet an enjoyable wine. Felt thin and nite quite eveolved yet. Dominant light strawberry and some berry on a short finish. (3625 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
