Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 50 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by jshufelt on 4/24/2024 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 45 minutes before service - 3-5 hours would have been better, but these things happen. In the glass, clear medium red at the rim, shading gracefully to dark opaque red at the core. On the nose, unripe cherries, damp wood, and a hint of asphalt. On the palate, relatively tight, with a spine of cherry throughout what is otherwise a pretty tannic wine. The secondary notes of wet stone, oak, and tar give me hope that several more years in the cellar will be beneficial. (35 views)
Tasted by phynes on 12/22/2023 & rated 93 points: Floral, bitter red fruit, rust and smooth. Quite linear and precise. Delicious and drinking well now. (492 views)
Tasted by Motz on 9/20/2023 & rated 93 points: Enjoyed over a long afternoon and evening. Moderate bricking.

Savory and earth, on the bouquet and palate. Dried fruits, worn leather, deciduous forest sous-bois, live herbs, cured meats, loam, and mineral ore notes throughout. Noteworthy secondary elements.

The wine features serious acid and deceptive, powdery tannins. Based on this experience, recommend holding for three to five years. Interesting sipper, better with food. (1174 views)
Tasted by askoje on 7/16/2023 & rated 93 points: Amazing nose, hard to capture all the elements of it. Cherries, espresso, oud wood, almonds, tar, grilled meat (from charcoal grill), roses, cardamom and so on and so on.
Palate is energetic and elegant with outstanding balance and length. This is drinking so well at this stage. 93/94 (788 views)
Tasted by Gorkalee11 on 11/18/2022 & rated 93 points: Drink now, very good. (1272 views)
Tasted by jschnabel on 10/21/2022 & rated 92 points: A very fleshy Barbaresco with notes of stewed fruit, herbs notes, black tea wet stone and earth. A very nice sipper with plenty of tannins that can further age another couple of years. (1163 views)
Tasted by Motz on 6/30/2022 & rated 93 points: Drank over two days.

The most meaty of three 2011 Riserva PdB offerings tasted in succession. Also, the leanest. This, however, takes nothing away from a precise and powerful Barbaresco.

It remained fairly reticent throughout the first evening. All the components were present, but not in true harmony. Had it at 92 points.

On the second evening, more open knit and revealing its true character. Rio Sordo consistently shows savory herb and cured meat qualities, reminiscent of Tuscany and Campania, and this offering is no exception. The last glass really made an impression.

I have tasted this a few times now and nothing suggests significant improvement. Showing compelling secondary elements, with wafting tertiary notes. I was never particularly enchanted by this vintage, preferring 2007, 2008, and 2010, and nothing has changed for me. This bottle had nothing less than five to seven years of life ahead of it. Drink by 2030-2032.

Not the equal of the same producer and vintage Asili and Montefico. (1833 views)
Tasted by Dugis on 5/10/2022 & rated 92 points: Quite subdued cherry fruit; soft, yet present tannins. No harm in waiting a few years still. (1399 views)
Tasted by Grinner on 4/12/2022 & rated 93 points: After a 1 hr decant, this bottle was classic. Great depth of red fruit, spices, mineral, leather, tar and tea notes. Balance excellent, with tannins in check and acid not overboard. Now-2031 (1485 views)
Tasted by acyso on 2/6/2022 & rated 85 points: Vinetasters: 2013 Produttori horizontal et al. (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Cherry, with some confected notes that resemble cough syrup on nose. Very sweet with lots of aldehydes and tannins, with an almost bitter finish. Herbal and herbaceous. Good acidity, but overall this shows some imbalance from the alcohol. Incredibly tannic. Correctly guessed as 2011 nebbiolo. (2374 views)
Tasted by Orange Tsian on 11/13/2021 & rated 90 points: 90-91/100 (1726 views)
Tasted by Eric on 9/28/2021: Produttori tasting (Benevello, Langhe, Italy): Pure, mineral, naked Nebbiolo. Stunning wine. (1811 views)
Tasted by DantheMan123 on 10/13/2020 & rated 93 points: Everything came into balance and beauty after 3.5 hours in the decanter!
This wine is potent and beefy. Could easily go for a barolo in a blind tasting. Classic nebbiolo with lots of ripe fruit and secondary complexity.
I think the decant time was crucial for my experience
Also - perfect cork! Not even a millimeter of bleeding (2517 views)
Tasted by Patrik H on 8/29/2020 & rated 91 points: On the nose: Roses, licorice, lead and rosehip
On the palate: Nice tannins, high acidity, licorice and roses in a fine balance.
Long finis (2338 views)
Tasted by askoje on 7/31/2020 & rated 93 points: Quite dark for a Barbaresco. 2 hours decant.
Big and yet elegant nose, this is power and finesse. Almonds, hazel, espresso, sandalwood, Swiss cheese, and ripe raspberries on the nose. Big mouth feel, lots of cherries and strong backbone. Perfect balance, so much potential left. Looooong finish. Will recork and try again on day 2.
Om day 2 it shows more juicy cherry fruit and herb components, much more open but still same characteristics as yesterday.
On day 3, ripe cherries, sun dried tomatoes on the nose. Outstanding balance, warm cherries and strawberries, great acidity and length. To my understanding 2011 was a warm vintage. It has this incredible combination of ripe fruit (not jammy), and still fresh and great acidity.
This was a magnificent Barbaresco that was very interesting to taste over three days. If you open this now, let it sit for several hours in the decanter. No doubt this wine still has plenty life left, but at the same time it’s very approachable now. (2152 views)
Tasted by rfras on 7/14/2020 & rated 88 points: The first bottle I had was excellent, but this bottle was a little off. (2331 views)
Tasted by Motz on 5/14/2020 & rated 93 points: Produttori del Barbaresco vintage tasting, alongside the 2010 and 2012 D.O.C. offerings, over three days.

Quite tight upon opening, lean and muscular, to really enjoy, which made recorking the wine an easy choice.

This experiment was particularly informative in that the two D.O.C. wines showed equal or greater range, while this put Rio Sordo terroir on display. Fairly light in color and body, it features a unique combination of raspberry, rose hip, and dusty rock charm and gritty power, backed by touches of meatiness...cured, and particularly mincemeat.

It also showed best on the third day, pushing the 94 point marker, a score it may fully earn after several more years in the cellar. In terms of QPR, of course, the 2010 had it beat hands down. 93-94. (3241 views)
Tasted by Vino Monkeys on 4/16/2020 & rated 90 points: Medium ruby. Medium intense, developed aromas of strawberry, raspberry and cranberry compote, and stewed red berries. Cola. Flavors follow the nose, with high acid and high, slightly edgy tannins. Medium plus body. Medium plus finish. Drinking really well now, but could improve with a little more time, provided the fruit holds up. (2221 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 1/17/2020 & rated 92 points: Quite dark in the glass. Aromatic with savory balsamic notes. Fruit is concentrated, on the darker side. Tannins are rather prominent, but balanced with the fruit. Not a lot of nuance at this stage though ripe fruit makes it accessible. Best to hold. (2457 views)
Tasted by Argrath on 10/11/2019 & rated 91 points: (Blind tasting)
Somewhat muffled nose. Some complexity, but very tight. After a while the tar, tea leaves and some balsamic notes vafts forth. Even flowers, nuts and sweet cherry.
Fullish, powerful and very, very tannic palate. Warm, perhaps a bit four-square. Walnuts, oak, chocolate and spice. Rustic but long and intense. Tea leaf tannic dryness.
Generous, but rustic. (1294 views)
Tasted by bajayngo on 7/17/2019: Produtorri is one of my favorite barbaresco producers. They are definitely on the more muscular side of Barbaresco in their style but they still sneak in all of that amazing tomato leaf, roses, great tannins in depth the fruit. (965 views)
Tasted by vinorsk on 6/30/2019 & rated 90 points: Decanted 2.5 hours and drank with a smoked duck. Rich, balanced with grippy tannins and bright acidity. A medium-full bodied wine (7 out of 10) with a nose of black cherries and spices. There are secondary cedar notes. The tannins coat the teeth and the acidity tightens the mouth but the wine is ripe and juicy not drying - the acidity is big but very much in balance, as are the tannins. Cooked cherries and vanilla flavors, long finish and slightly hot from the 14.5% alcohol. Not typical nebbiolo (no violet) but very good. Hard to say if this will.improve dramatically but it's very enjoyable now (June 2019). More depth than many $40 barbarescos. (2675 views)
Tasted by Motz on 6/28/2019 & rated 93 points: Over three days. At once, pure, pretty, and uniquely lean. Sweet red berry fruit, hibiscus, rosehip, and tar. A steeliness appears at the back and finish. Lovely. Patience will be rewarded. (2744 views)
Tasted by Q's on 3/2/2019 & rated 93 points: An very good wine despite being quite young. It’s approachable because of its well-balanced fruit acidity and tannins (not at all astringent or bitter). Even though it’s still fairly tannic they are so superfine and silky it was quite enjoyable. I’m sure it will become more complex with age but it’s not too soon with a long decant to enjoy it now. I’ll hold on my other bottles for about three more years then try again (2548 views)

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
