Classic left bank bouquet, pencil, cedar, Blackcurrant, +3h: even more generous and more flowery/fruity with an excotic touch. Harmonious palate, tannins starting to mellow, long dry finish.  Tasted by capacious on 1/15/2016 & rated 90 points: Young, just entering drinking window or perhaps even a bit early- has the structure to go for some time, so no need to open yet unless you have a case and want to put a toe in the 2005 vintage which We have barely done. PNP which is not the way. Better and better over four hours. Tannins well integrated, notes ? of leather, tobacco, cedar, look forward to next year. Good QPR. Even tho scored same as from 375, and that was a year ago, I come away from this liking it better than I remember (591 views)

Saturated garnet, medium- full bodied, high quality cabernet fruit with currant and tobacco and graphite. Really singing.
This is traditionally made and faithful to the terroir. This producer represents the kind of wine that got me interested in Bordeaux. It's a testament to what kind of owners they are, where they completely ignored the fruit bomb trend of the past two decades and did their own thing.
Evolved into something more as the night went on, taking on secondary notes of spice and slight garrigue- which tells me it still has a lot of stuffing to go another 10 years.

 Tasted by chatters on 12/28/2015: Black currant, fresh tobacco, violets, sweet oak, beetroot and toast on the nose. A little austere without food but with lamb this begins to shine; it's fresh with fine but gritty tannins and black currant as the dominant fruit. Great qpr from an excellent vintage. With time a liquorice note is added and a touch of farmyard. It also broadens on the palate (1022 views)

Put on weight, deep colour, ripe nose and palette, becoming soft. Lovely balance, cassis, cedar, savoury. Claret at this level often leaves me wondering why but I'm looking forward to the next bottle of this. Drink now or cellar for years. (1042 views)

The wine looks garnet colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like plum, dust, toast, vanilla, clove and meaty. It tastes like sandalwood, vanilla, chocolate and plum. The body is medium/full. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity. (998 views)

Medium-plus garnet in appearance with a nose of tobacco leaf, some dark earthen red berries, and hints of black fruits and cassis. Leathery cassis with some blackberries and brown tobacco on the palate. Medium bodied with a medium finish; tannins are mostly integrated. I keep seeing the word "rustic" in describing this wine and I tend to agree with that assessment; definitely has the rusticness of a traditional, old school type of bordeaux. Cassis and spice in the nose, long mid-range and excellent finish. May continue to improve for a year or two, but tannins are moderate and largely resolved. Much better than the previous bottle and very enjoyable with grilled ribeye steak. (1987 views)

 Tasted by blanquito on 4/28/2015 & rated 91 points: Goddamn, this is good, seriously good. Ethereal scents of inkberry, cranberry, cassis, loam, vitamins. A truly fresh and engaging bouquet. A bit grapey still, but with incipient savory notes, and round yet tangy profile. Light to medium bodied yet intense and long, and some dry tannins remain on the finish. This is one of the best vintages of this wine I've had, true to the house style while eschewing any flaws. Drinkable now, and over the next decade. Tasted from 375 ml. (3035 views)

 Tasted by palbe on 11/28/2014 & rated 85 points: Decanted 1 hr. Deep ruby. Slightly herbal nose of cassis with plums emerging, in addition to the classic leather and some dark chocolate. Medium bodied with nice fruit persistence, cool berries and tannins still a little stern. A stylish charmer and an excellent value. In a good place for me now, but will surely develop and mellow out.  Tasted by ProfByron on 10/10/2014 & rated 88 points: It has some of the richness expected of 2005. It's savoury and food friendly, not souped up with oak or alcohol. Others at the table enjoyed it a good deal. That said, it's fairly straightforward and I doubt it will gain much with age.

PS I found a 2009 tasting note of mine. Again 88 points:
2005 has given a really nice lift in richness to this good but minor claret. Good drinking now and over the next 5+ years.

Interesting though to think how far this wine is from its classed growth St. Julien neighbours. (2186 views)

 Tasted by silk1969 on 9/18/2014 & rated 90 points: Popped, poured, swirled for 10 minutes and jumped in. Lovely, classic Bordeaux nose of leather, cigar box, black currant, and sweet cherry. Light, almost lean, on the palate, leading with cherry tobacco, leather, and earth. Currant and unripe plum are in the background, and the tannins aren't quite resolved, adding a pleasantly bitter tar element that takes over on the finish. Lots going on here, the mouthfeel is decent, and this is a terrific value under 30 bucks. (2308 views)

Plum, blackberry, currant and leather on the nose; black fruit, lead pencil and mint on the palate. Round and mouth filing, with a trace of tannins at this point. Soft finish. Drinking well now. Tart berry and plum, definitely has the rustic barnyard and earthy components (but was not overwhelming as I've sometimes faulted this wine for), and tight tannins will serve to carry this wine for some years to come. The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Haut-Médoc

But as long ago as 1815 a Chartrons broker, whose word carried weight, spoke of great red wines in the Haut-Médoc, so recognizing the high quality successfully achieved by this region's growers in the eighteenth century. The same Bordeaux broker revealed that the business world of the Chartrons and the great Bordeaux proprietors had established a sort of league-table of the parishes in which the vine-growing communes of today's Haut-Médoc appellation showed up well.

The Haut-Médoc appellation stretches over some thirty seven miles from north to south, from Saint-Seurin de Cadourne to Blanquefort. Within this area, certain zones produce wines exclusively with the Haut-Médoc appellation. It has terroirs of remarkable quality. And although we may note a certain predominance of layers of gravel (essentially Garonne gravel) from the Quaternary, all these sites are characterized by their wide diversity. Today in the southernmost communes of the appellation, the suburbs of Bordeaux, numerous vineyards which existed at the beginning of the twentieth century have disappeared, victims of urban expansion. But the vines live on... because man has retained his devotion to them.

The astonishing variety of different terroirs, the result of the very extent of the area, explains the diversity of Haut-Médoc wines, a fact which is rare within one and the same appellation.
But, over and above the differences, linked to this mosaic of climatic and geological influence, all these wines have the same family traits of character.
Alert and lively, full-bodied without being too powerful, and harmoniously balanced, they acquire a rare bouquet over the years.

In order to have the right to the Haut-Médoc appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the communes of Blanquefort, Le Taillan, Parempuyre, Le Pian, Ludon, Macau, Arsac, Labarde, Cantenac, Margaux, Avensan, Castelnau, Soussans, Arcins, Moulis, Listrac, Lamarque, Cussac, Saint-Laurent de Médoc, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, Saint-Sauveur, Cissac, Saint-Estèphe, Vertheuil, Saint-Seurin de Cadourne "excluding all the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (48 hectolitres per hectare).
