Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 17 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by soyhead on 12/14/2018: from magnum, courtesy of Alex, not the blockbuster that the '94 was/is, but rather a bordeaux-esque very pretty wine with tobacco and cherry on the nose, and tobacco, earth, and dried fruits on the palate. long and slightly astringent. (1301 views)
Tasted by skoppel on 11/14/2016 & rated 90 points: Somewhat generic, but powerful. Took a day to open and was lush, but not with a lot of character. I expected a little more at this price, but a very nice wine. (1931 views)
Tasted by Geaux Tigers on 2/18/2016 & rated 91 points: Bottle 1 was clearly flawed in some way. This was much better. Forrest floor, dirt, mineral and heavy scents of bubble gum on the nose. Tannins gone, but unfortunately so was a majority of the fruit, but the acid remained. Good nevertheless. (2441 views)
Tasted by Geaux Tigers on 2/13/2016 & rated 88 points: Signs of seepage, cork shredded but able to pull with butlers thief. Initially tasted like port, but settled into candied orange slices, chocolate covered cherry liqueurs. No tannins no oak. (2414 views)
Tasted by Wine_lvr on 1/5/2014 & rated 90 points: Still dark red. Nose of ripe berries and leather. The taste is a bit dominated by hard tannins and the wine feels a bid "made". On day two the wine developed to the positive, the hard tannins started to become integrated into the rich sweetness. Overall not a bad wine but just to much on the fat yet one-dimensional side. Drink now - 2020. (3202 views)
Tasted by Old Vino on 7/27/2013 & rated 91 points: no notes at time of consumption (2589 views)
Tasted by CJ4 on 12/21/2012 & rated 93 points: Cork was in great shape with very minor sedimentation considering its age. Still a very dark purple with just a hint of brick. Bottle started off with a very strong scent of tequila that made it unpleasant to drink. I'm glad the world didn't end on 12/21/12, because I left it in a decanter overnight and it was much, much better the next evening. Fruit was still going strong after 16 years of aging and 24 hours of decanting. Tannins were well balanced. Glad I have one more bottle! (2320 views)
Tasted by rbryant on 4/30/2011 & rated 95 points: cork was going, but the wine was great! (3014 views)
Tasted by bruinesq84 on 4/23/2011 & rated 95 points: this was stunning from the opening of the cork. no seepage to speak of; beautiful nose of cedar and dark fruits with some leather notes in the bakcground. Mouthfeel was ample and boy was this tasty. Fruit is alive and well with nice supporting acid and tannic structure. Should easily live another 5 yrs, but why wait as it's definitely in the zone right now. Definite rebuy. (2970 views)
Tasted by JFish on 2/17/2008: Ditto my TN from a month ago. Killer california cab. (3097 views)
Tasted by JFish on 1/19/2008: This bottle drank as well as any California Cab that I have ever had. Definitely Cali but with secondary development - all fruit and leather. Wow. No fear of it fading anytime soon but I can't imagine it getting any better. (2897 views)
Tasted by rothdog on 11/28/2007 & rated 89 points: Still has a nice, deep ruby coloration, although it is beginning to take on brick tones as well. This wine has bright acidity and lots of leather. In fact, if you really enjoy earthy wines with lots of leather, this wine is for you. The leather is quite predominant on the nose. Nice, firm but smooth tannins, which feel expansive on the palate. Leather, mocha, truffles, and black cherry on the palate. Moderately long finish. Tasted next to the 1994 Beringer Private Reserve, which was is drinking exceptionally well, and is by far the better wine. (2906 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
