Tasted by sabrage on 5/23/2021 & rated 90 points: Another bottle from the group that wasn’t stored well. Held up very well all thing considered. Coffee and ripe plum nose. Umami, jam and coffee grounds on palate. Leather texture. Long finish. (727 views)
Tasted by Mtnmd1 on 5/30/2020 & rated 92 points: Decanted. Aging gracefully (882 views)
Tasted by John McCabe on 7/7/2019 & rated 91 points: Pretty traditional in style, not over-ripe, too sweet or jammy, some dryness, which I like. (1280 views)
Tasted by smithto on 12/26/2017 & rated 93 points: Strong showing for this Howell Mountain product. Drank after about a 30 minute decant. Strong fruit with good tannins. Began to fade after a couple of hours, but still enjoyable at 12 years. (1605 views)
Tasted by COWine-Oh on 7/16/2017 & rated 92 points: Opaque deep purple with black fruits on the nose. Finish is now smooth with softer tannins than previous tastings. PNP so maybe it will improve with a little time and air. (1966 views)
Tasted by tourproto on 1/2/2017 & rated 93 points: Howell Mountain cabs do not disappoint. Excellent cab with USDA Prime Ribeye steaks. (1630 views)
Tasted by 1961Vintage on 7/4/2016 & rated 91 points: Glad to have received as a gift. Certainly not worth the $77 average paid. More like a solid $30-40. Had a very nice nose and flavor profile, but lost it on the mouth feel and finish. (1739 views)
Tasted by JJB007 on 9/16/2014 & rated 90 points: a good wine , but it did not hold up against a Carter 2007 Hossfield (3173 views)
Tasted by klaberdog on 12/24/2013 & rated 90 points: - Brick color. (2900 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 8/24/2013 & rated 92 points: First night a bit high toned with red mountain fruits. Deepened and broadened its flavors on Day #2. Still has nice acids and some edgy tannins that compliment food.Long finish. (2850 views)
Tasted by jtb102 on 3/25/2013 & rated 92 points: Like candy. More acidic than tannic, great food wine. Good stand alone. (2772 views)
Tasted by sdezutti on 1/26/2013 & rated 94 points: Good nose and flavors of brambly fruit and dried leaves. Good body, smooth, balanced, drinking very well. Medium tannins- I enjoyed this bottle very much. (1824 views)
Tasted by Frangee on 10/7/2012 & rated 91 points: Bought for Kathy's bd. (2118 views)
Tasted by sellerscellar on 12/23/2011 flawed bottle: Not totally gone, but definitely had about 6-8 months of life left...tops... (2080 views)
Tasted by AGee on 11/6/2011 & rated 91 points: Huge nose of currant, blackberry, smoke and a hint of dust and bell pepper. Very fruit forward for a Howell Mountain wine. Good structure, complex, dense dark fruit and an expressive finish, a little bit of heat though on the back end. Ended up pairing it with spicey crabcake at the restaurant we brought it to and it worked out nicely. (2099 views)
Tasted by BSZach1 on 10/2/2011 & rated 89 points: Smooth tannins. Not over the top. Decanted for a few hours and the aromatics really didn't last as long as I thought they should. (1894 views)
Tasted by DA Wines on 3/13/2011 & rated 92 points: Ready to take off very soon..... (2564 views)
Tasted by pea on 3/11/2011 & rated 91 points: Starting to getting mature (2637 views)
Tasted by Tim Heaton on 1/22/2011: PnP. This impressed, not only for its balance and enjoyability, but for its structure, too. Cool, clean mountain fruit with plenty of herbs, red currants, sweet tobacco leaf and juicy red berries. A bit of menthol, some red floral and toasty oak make appearances, but they seem to come and go at their own pleasure. I'm not a fan at upwards of $65, but this is inarguably a well-crafted wine and a solid value at anything less than $50. Smooth stylish tannins and understated acidity add to the effort. I withhold recommendation simply because of it's price point (approx $75), but if the cost is inconsequential, you're in for a very nice drink, with plenty of elegance and finesse. Drink thru 2020, 14.4% abv. (2665 views)
Tasted by Ted Aronson on 12/17/2010 & rated 92 points: Wonderful Napa cab. Deep cherry and black currant. Elegant tannins. Drinking well now and will undoubtedly improve with age. (2904 views)
Tasted by qhdeputy on 8/6/2010 & rated 92 points: Very smooth tanins. Full of fruit; blackberry, blueberry, with a hint of leather. (2893 views)
Tasted by jonysan on 5/2/2010 & rated 93 points: I wanted a nice Cab with my steak, so we popped & poured this. Closed nose, tight on the palette, rough tannins. Stopped drinking it an decanted an hour before putting back in the bottle. Jump ahead a day. Decanted another couple hours & drank. Wow! What a difference. Wonderful berry aromas. Plum, cherry, chocolate flavors. Tannins smoothed out significantly. Classic balance. This wine defines what I love about a good Napa Cab. (2868 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 3/17/2009 & rated 93 points: Family Wine Makers: Wow! Blkberry, pepper, licorice, complex, silky fram, fine t’s, tab.-frt mth, long finish. So goos. Excellent. (977 views)
Tasted by bigdomer on 11/23/2008 & rated 94 points: Absolutely loved this wine. Rediculously smooth tannins for such a young beast. Howell Mountain fruit comes through again. Highly recommended. (3791 views)

Nickel & Nickel

Producer website

The Nickel & Nickel winery, founded in 1997 but born from a tradition of exceptional winemaking, is devoted to creating wines that articulate the singular expressions of the vineyards in Oakville and beyond.

Established by the partners of Far Niente, Nickel & Nickel is based on a philosophy of producing 100 percent varietal, single-vineyard wines that best express the distinct personality of each vineyard. The winery’s current releases include Napa Valley Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Russian River Valley Chardonnay, Syrah and Zinfandel.

Nickel & Nickel represents a distinct departure from the flagship Far Niente estate wines that are produced from a combination of vineyards and varietals. The partners also felt it necessary to have a winemaker devoted to each winery – Far Niente, Dolce and Nickel & Nickel -- in order to produce the quality wines that are their hallmark. These factors, along with a noticeable upsurge in the market’s interest in vineyard-designated wines, led to the launch of Nickel & Nickel as a separate brand.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
