Tasted by Sperls on 4/6/2024 & rated 95 points: Drank at the same Commanderie event and agree completely w BordeauxOne’s note. An opened recorked bottle was still singing on the next night w homemade burgers. However, an 05 Leoville Barton tried alongside at the event had a lot more structure and black fruit to it. (863 views)
Tasted by BordeauxOne on 4/6/2024 & rated 95 points: Great easy drinking Pape Clement. Drank at a Commanderie de Bordeaux Partager. Still young. Can drink for several more decades if stored properly. Excellent with Beef Daube Provencal. Hold off for another 3 -5 years before drinking again. (617 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 3/9/2024 & rated 94 points: Small Tasting & Dinner with Friends: A taste from a bottle opened the previous evening. Very much Pessac with notes of black fruit, asphalt and iodine. Still a good bit firm and tannic, with flavors of black currant, plum and iodine with good underlying acidity. Generally speaking, it seems these '05s are evolving at a glacial pace. (R&D) (1270 views)
Tasted by xscac001 on 3/2/2024 & rated 94 points: @Phil. Complex but need more time. Need more sweet to come out (1112 views)
Tasted by jjwala on 2/6/2024 & rated 94 points: opened last sunday. decanted for an hour, but was very tight and closed. nose of licorice, beautiful. after another hour of decant, it opened up very well. lovely wine and drinking well now and i believe can keep for 5+ years. (1525 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 1/30/2024 & rated 95 points: Double decanted, given 3 hours in the decanter, then double decanted again....then slow ox'd for about an hour at our table while we tasted other wines.

Served blind: Dark garnet in the glass, no hint of aging at all. Lots of barnyard for the first hour or two of air which mostly blew off, leaving behind a touch of it along with leather, dark red/black fruit, black tea and later on in the evening, roses.

Palate of savory cherry, slightly tart, with some herbs de Provence. Nice weight to the wine in the mouth, drinks at least 5 years younger than its age whereas the '05 Pavie, to me drank 10 years older than its age tonight. Both good and similar scores but both very different. 94-95 for me with 6 hours total airtime. Must be a Left Bank/Right Bank thing with the '05s? This one feels like it wants more time in the bottle to me. (2177 views)
Tasted by Bordeaux 2013 on 1/11/2024 & rated 93 points: Very good, but not top notch. (1649 views)
Tasted by mjdixon on 1/9/2024 & rated 92 points: Thin and closed on opening and took 2 hours to come alive
At its peak with tannins and fresh fruit nearby gone
But lively secondary flavours
Will try more recent vintages (1581 views)
Tasted by jmoon on 1/8/2024 & rated 94 points: Now mature and prob at peak. Graphite edge blew off after 30 min. Dark juicy and delicious. (1541 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 1/6/2024 & rated 94 points: Dinner with Friends (R&R's): Double blind. A little bricking clues us in that this has some age. Aromas of iron, red plum and dried herbs. Full-bodied with medium tannin and flavors of red berry fruit, plum, black currants, iron and herbs. Really accentuates the rosemary on the lamb and was my second favorite pairing. I guessed 2000 Pape Clement...I wasn't too far off.

This was another in a very small group of 2005s that are just beginning to drink well...perhaps as a whole the vintage is finally starting to come around. Based on this showing I may pull a couple of the "lesser" '05s from our cellar to check in.

This particular bottle's cork was pulled mid-day and left in the cellar to breathe. Served with the main course roughly eight hours after the cork had been pulled. Plenty of upside from here, I would probably give this at least a couple of years yet. (R&D) (1333 views)
Tasted by BLam on 12/20/2023 & rated 93 points: Eric broght this wine for my BD dinner in SH among other 05' and Chambertins. It was the only BDX and served in the end, served well. (1312 views)
Tasted by Winedad53 on 12/16/2023 & rated 96 points: Wine of the night. Plush black velvet carpet of ripe blackberry, violet and rose petals, and touch of steely carbon on the finish. (1045 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 11/18/2023 & rated 95 points: consistent with notes of 10/27/2019 - even with 5+ hour decant this felt a bit tight on first taste but opened nicely in the glass (1583 views)
Tasted by jsmorris707 on 11/13/2023 & rated 97 points: Similar to prior note after double decanting for 2.5 hrs; outstanding, drink or hold (1552 views)
Tasted by hkbob on 10/10/2023 & rated 96 points: Another great bottle of this wine which has performed consistently across the half-case I've been fortunate enough to enjoy over the past couple of years. A fragrant quintessential Bordeaux nose with mesquite charcoal, sous-bois, and fresh cigar notes overlaying the glorious dark fruit. A mouthful of pleasure that persists on the long finish. I am a huge fan of this wine. And no rush to drink as it has years to run still. (1686 views)
Tasted by dhwesley on 9/30/2023 & rated 92 points: Very dark in color and no discernible sediment. Color goes all the way to the rim - no bricking.

PnP: nose is fairly fresh but this is where the age starts to show a bit - mushrooms, wet earth. Appealing but closed at the moment. So nicely balanced on the tongue, it develops with great length and a finish that, again, betrays the bit of age in this bottle. Dark, dark fruits give way to tannins and a bit of bite at the end. Out of the bottle it's not giving much away on the nose or tongue.

Quite well balanced and clearly well made. This glass will not take center stage but is a solid supporting actor for any meal. 90pts.

Update: tried again the next day, after mark1npt suggested it may need a bit more air. There was certainly marked improvement overnight, primarily in the emergence of delicious port, raisin and cocoa notes, with a hint of mint. Tannins are fully integrated so it may be time to drink up if you have any bottles - but be sure to give them many hours of air to fully develop. 92pts. (1748 views)
Tasted by Bordeaux 2013 on 9/29/2023 & rated 93 points: Good to drink now. Improves with some air, but no long decant is needed. I believe it‘s not going to improve much from here, so no need to wait. (1518 views)
Tasted by hkbob on 7/5/2023 & rated 95 points: Another wonderful bottle of this wine, although just off the stratospheric levels of several others drunk recently. Nose and palate were good to go from the first pour albeit there continued to be improvement on the latter over several hours. A couple hour decant for those with more patience than me would elevate the experience. While so good already, this still has years to run IMO. (2250 views)
Tasted by J weezy on 6/8/2023 & rated 98 points: 98 points. I tasted a 2012 vintage and loved it. Done some research and found that 2005 was a top vintage and proceeded to purchase about 15 bottles.. I had 3 in 6 months and was left disappointed each time as I found the 2012 better and the 2005 lacking. I decided I needed to try a different approach, I had been drinking them from the cellar slightly chilled and decanted 1 hour. This time I moved the bottle from the fridge to the cupboard 24 hours early and decantered 4 hours - it made a world of difference. Drinking a warmer version and well decanted pape clement. Maybe this is typical of Bordeaux wines ?? Delicious (2425 views)
Tasted by BradA on 6/1/2023 & rated 93 points: Brought to dinner at my sisters prior to the Cure concert.

Brilliant wine, ready to consume! Deep, rich with a nose of pipe tobacco and flavors of tight currant. Really fine and so lovely to share with my brother in law. Enjoy now to 2030. (2247 views)
Tasted by jonnyoro on 5/24/2023 & rated 98 points: Haven’t had this in a few years- the oak is now completely integrated and this is drinking great! Tannins have softened, great fruit- blackberry, mulberry, a hint of earth, tar, and tobacco, viscous mouth feel… a finish that goes on and on and on… yum. (2257 views)
Tasted by AndreRibeiroChaves on 5/7/2023 & rated 98 points: Holy cow! This is simply the best Bordeaux I have ever had! Perfection in a bottle! Well deserving of its 99 Parker rating. (2316 views)
Tasted by EricU on 3/30/2023 & rated 98 points: Elegant, fine tannins, complex.

WOTN along with a Las Cases (2367 views)
Tasted by jskuek on 12/22/2022 & rated 96 points: Nose barnyard, complex truffle, silky long finishing. (2870 views)
Tasted by tedcholl on 12/18/2022 & rated 96 points: A sublime Grand Cru from the excellent 2005 vintage. 55% Merlot and 45% Cab Sauv. Removed cork 5 hr before serving. Incredible nose you want to continue sniffing of wild berries, wet mossy forest floor, eucalyptus, thyme, leather, wood, smoke. Nose confirmed on the palate. Wonderful balance, and finish. A wine like this is why people love Bordeaux. (2583 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
