 Tasted by Purple Tooth on 4/13/2024 & rated 93 points: Oh my...Losing focus and fruit but the brick house under it is all there, brick by brick. This bottle came across as a bit clumsy. Loud...Belligerent. Said allot, but didn't say much. Shows quality, shows no Bordeaux. Shows cedar and some graphite, but lacks balance. Lets hope its in re-balance mode. Long, coarse, dry finish. My advice to others and a note for myself is: drink this by itself, not in a lineup of supposed peers. Drink (1721 views)

Best at start 16-17C with hard cheese. More dry and harsh with the food an18-19 C.

Keep at 15-17, salty meat and decant 1-2h.

Notes: the 2005 vintage has always been and probably will continue to be (at least for another decade) mysterious, full, well structured and unready. Very jam like and tannic still, this wine is not very enjoyable right now. Personally I have never been a fan of Pontet Canet and given this great vintage I am still unable to spot anything interesting or promising at this very moment, I think this may require another 10 years to develop and mature so I would advise owner of this bottle to lay it down and forget about it for a while.

In the mouth much more interesting- viscous, velvety, layered texture. Not a lot of acid, but there is a noticeable tannic bite. Slight edge of bitterness. But it’s not unpleasant at all. I’m rather enjoying trying to figure out what’s going on with this wine. I have a feeling it will be much bigger with more air. Will try the rest of the bottle tomorrow. 90pts.

Ok second day after Coravin. Folks are right - I should have decanted 3+ hrs on day 1. Much bigger nose, with notes of blackberry, plum, rhubarb jam (?), lavender (?), tar, forest floor. Tannins have receded. It’s lost some of the density and viscosity, but gained freshness and acidity. Tasty! 93 pts. (5019 views)

Excellent wine. Opened for our 29th Anniversary.

Clearly a majority cab sauv blend. Black cherry, cedar, and vanilla on the nose. On the palate one immediately notices fruit, tartness, and zest. Complex. Flavors of dark cherry and some maraschino, black pepper, white pepper, a hint of licorice, some red fruit in the background.

I can see why some note New World characteristics. I suspect this will continue to improve with time in the cellar. Let it sit several more years and give it air before consuming. I note that the wine is continuing to improve as the decant gets longer. (6223 views)
 Tasted by Kirk Grant on 12/17/2023: This was opened, decanted for 5 hours, and re-tasted the following evening. Purchased on release and stored in my Eurocave or a passive cellar since release. So the bottle, cork, and wine were in the best possible condition save from the Chateau itself.

All that being said, I was not that impressed with this wine. To me, this has more in-common with a Napa Cabernet than it does with other producers from Pauillac. There's a level of ripeness to this wine that feels out of balance (to me). Rich and full in body, with robust notes of blackberry, black plum, and dark chocolate and a lingering note of oak on the finish that feels (to me) like it's just a tad too overbearing. People that prefer full-bodied red wines, that are richly layered, will enjoy this wine. Outstanding (5682 views)

Opened several hours before dinner, but not decanted. Some light and slightly sticky tannins suggest further ageing potential, but the aromatics are fully developed without tumbling into advanced tertiary notes. More black fruit than mushroom, in other words. Glorious. Preceded by 1998 Bel-Air Marquis d'Aligre (Margaux), very interesting contrast, both wines were excellent. (5103 views)

Dark red, thin clear rim, looks quite young still.
This wine is still very powerful. Some secondary characteristics coming out but still a lot of fruit. Very floral, dried violets, cherry cough drop, slight notes of struck flint, hint of leather, red fruit with dark chocolate comes out. Prune. Saving last bottle for at least 5 years later. Really enjoyable wine and powerful wine. 95+ (5327 views)

 Tasted by SonnyChiba on 8/6/2023 & rated 93 points: I have had this wine many times over the years. Usually it is up there in the 95-96pts range but latest tasting was slightly underwhelming. The wine is fantastic overall, but felt it was a little overripe and didn't have the finesse I remember in previous tastings. It's still a full bodied, rich, delicious wine, but hopefully just along its way and will develop more elegance and nuance. (9460 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
