Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.1 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 18 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by thalver on 1/26/2023: This continues to drink well, a nice middle ground between some of the huge syrahs and the leaner, acidic ones. Neither too big nor too small, but just right (376 views)
Tasted by td1836 on 2/25/2022 & rated 91 points: High acidity, blue and red fruits, mellows out on the finish. Definitely CA syrah, but not overly ripe. (522 views)
Tasted by thalver on 12/8/2019: drinking well on a pop and pour. aromatically expressive, blue fruits and some savory characteristics...very nice balance. The tannins came to the fore after being open 3 or 4 hours. (828 views)
Tasted by STM82 on 9/25/2018 & rated 92 points: Similar notes hold true. This showed less depth however. (1483 views)
Tasted by STM82 on 5/14/2018 & rated 93 points: Great nose of forest floor, dark berries, and briny sea fog. This wine has such beautiful balance and depth. Savory notes intermingle with the fruit cohesively. (1391 views)
Tasted by fecaputo on 12/15/2017 & rated 91 points: Delicious and balanced, not overly rich. Good acidity. (1350 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 11/1/2017 & rated 92 points: Deep purplish ruby red. Lovely 'Côte Rôtie' styled nose with black olives, smoke, dark floral notes and black currants. More floral notes as it breathes. Well rounded and spicy on the palate with medium tannins (6/10) and medium bodied. Layered palate with notes of black olives, bacon fat, pepper, dark spices and minerality. Long and lingering finish with balanced acidity. Drink till 2024. (1402 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 7/18/2017 & rated 93 points: consumed over two nights. About the same each night. Excellent cooler Climate Syrah. Purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, black pepper, slight leather and hints of camphor. On the palate, great juicy texture. deep black raspberry fruit. Depth. It unwinds nicely in the glass. Great with food. Long finish. Great value as well. (1621 views)
Tasted by TC16 on 1/26/2017 & rated 93 points: A very pretty wine. Black raspberry and black cherry. Low tannins. Acidity in balance. A little iron and meatiness, but the fruit outpaces everything else. Drinking very well right now. (1030 views)
Tasted by TottenCellars on 1/22/2017: Enjoyed this over several nights and it didn't disappoint. This needs time to open and rewards you with big fruit, some earth and definitely goes great with food. More classically structured cali Syrah than is fashionable now. I'll be buying this again. (1078 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 11/3/2016 & rated 91 points: Medium ruby. Started off with black fruits and some black cherries. Opened up with some herbs and olives a few hours later. Lots of iron and meatiness on the palate, very savory to start and then opened up with some darker fruits like black cherries and underneath was a hint of spice. Moderate tannins (5.5/10) and medium bodied. This wine kept going with the long finish and longevity in days. Great QPR. Drink till 2024. (1184 views)
Tasted by td1836 on 10/4/2016 & rated 90 points: This is a bit bright and there is some heat coming through on the nose on night one. The fruit started out high strung, but mellowed out after some air. Medium weight. I will give my other a bottle a few more years. I prefer a less ripe fruit style in Syrah. (1041 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 4/19/2016 & rated 93 points: Hdr Closing Tasting: Always great to see Macario. I love his Syrah but this was my first glimpse at the 13. Another winner for sure. Nice black raspberry fruit. Some black pepper and roasted herbs. It runs down the middle in style as ripe fruit from a cooler climate site. Love that. Fresh. Moderate tannins. Needs time based on prior vintages. (3119 views)
Tasted by STM82 on 3/28/2016 & rated 93 points: Couldn't wait so we poured and swirled. Awesome nose of purple flowers, anise, and darker berries. You can tell this was in need of time to fully open. Did the best we could. Notes of berries, crushed black rocks, and white pepper lead the way to a great finish. Will decant or try to hold the other bottles. (1163 views)
Tasted by TheJohnnyV on 3/2/2016 & rated 92 points: Awesome Syrah. Lots of life left and this will get better with time as my last glass on day 2 was the best. Approachable now but waiting will be rewarded. (1026 views)
Tasted by ledocq on 2/27/2016 & rated 93 points: Outstanding. This isn't particularly dense, but it's incredibly flavorful, evolving in the glass quickly and suggesting that if you're not a jerk like myself and can keep your hands off it you'll be in for a profound experience. This is stunning stuff - the 2012 tasting notes reflect the whole experience (bacon fat, olives, etc) but just know this is exceptionally tasty after an hour in the glass. It doesn't have the depths of my go-to (Radio Coteau Cherry Camp) but wow it's got a bright and lovely flavor right now. Hypnotically good. (1502 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
