Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 36 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Pmgreenberger on 11/23/2023: Decanted for 1 hour prior to drinking. Paired well with Thanksgiving dinner. (439 views)
Tasted by cos65 on 8/17/2023 & rated 92 points: Clear bright scarlet.
This still has a ton of structure, but finally opening up a bit, at least from 375.
Bright earthy bitter cherry flavors.
I’d still hold. YFS (524 views)
Tasted by vinhonotte on 7/25/2023 & rated 92 points: Burg/Bordeaux Dinner with BYO Gang (The Kongsee): Medium pale ruby. Nose exhibiting some richness, with plush ripe cherry and redcurrant, as well as florals, moss, and rich vanilla and cinnamon. Similar characters on the palate, whilst the tannins were still pretty robust, with zingy acids, all the while bring full and plush. Nice! (476 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 7/6/2023 & rated 92 points: Having recently tasted the 2013 of this wine, I would compare and contrast. The 2014 is similar in that this wine fits squarely in my wheelhouse for style of Red Burgundy that I love. While both vintages are still very youthful, the 2014 is definitely the bigger more brooding version vs. the 2013 which is more approachable and on a faster evolutionary track. The 2014 has more black cherry and the 2013 has more bing cherry fruit. The 2014 has a fuller mouthfeel and it is a bigger version of 2013. Bottom line... drink the 2013 now, hold the 2014 for another 3-5 years. (649 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 6/19/2023 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured. Drinking very nicely tonight, but not quite to the 94 score I gave it last time. Nie developing ruby color, dark buy not opaque. Nose is very nice, with rich yet gentle Pinot fruit, including sour cherry, but with a candy-like aspect to the fruit that is very attractive. Keeps you coming back for another sniff. The palate has plenty going for it, too, and is very nice from entry all the way through the long, ripe finish. Still good tension and grip, so I think this is in no danger of demise in the short term; I actually see no sign of age in the nose or mouth. This wine proved to be a very good bargain. I also think the critics (including my favorite, Vinous) underrated it. 4-12-18-8: 92/100. (655 views)
Tasted by cos65 on 4/8/2023 & rated 90 points: Bright clear scarlet colored
Rich earthy aromas
Very earthy bitter cherry flavors and a fair amount of bitter tannin in the back end even with 2 hours of air. This is still more impressive than delicious. Though other CT notes express concern about waiting, I’d certainly prefer to hold.

Tasted by Nacnud on 3/28/2023: In a lovely spot right now, I'm glad I didn't wait another few years - it's not worth the risk, it might lose it's vibrant quality. I would not decant, the last 8oz did not make it the following night (I had no help in finishing the bottle).

Fresh red fruit and perfect balance. Exactly what I was hoping for from this well known Beaune. (438 views)
Tasted by Mazy on 9/19/2022 & rated 90 points: Encore assez primaire, arômes de cerises et de raisin rouge. C’est complexe et tannique. Très bon mais mérite vraiment d’être oublié en cave au moins 5 ans! (1228 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 5/5/2022: This is definitely good stuff; tried another bottle for a tasting with friends and while still young it did not disappoint. The nose was ripe with plum, black cherry, lots of spice, some violet. The palate was dense with good concentration and great energy. Still lots of structure, but pairing with short ribs helped. Very good and still 5-10 years from peak. (1221 views)
Tasted by lepetitchateau on 12/4/2021 & rated 93 points: Not yet ready but it has excellent potential. Wait 5 years +/- (1545 views)
Tasted by schan109 on 11/26/2021 & rated 90 points: Unknown breathing time. Loads of fruit and nice nose with violet. The palate is still too tight, and flat. Need time to develop. (1375 views)
Tasted by Mazy on 7/11/2020 & rated 90 points: PNP. Note potentielle de 91-92 selon moi. (2986 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 4/24/2020: Cool and super pretty raspberry fruit. And beautiful cranberry fruit. Palate is silky and harmonious. But still very tight right now. (2805 views)
Tasted by BillyT on 1/16/2020 & rated 94 points: Previous notes apply...literally. (2524 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 9/25/2019 & rated 92 points: Brambly fruit, mineral-infused cherry, spice and herbs. Sweet cherry fruit backed vibrant acidity. Good potential. (2378 views)
Tasted by jnewman77 on 6/17/2019: Really tasty and drinking well young. The nose here has lots of brambly berry fruits with spice and floral notes in the background. The palate has good structure, but it is relatively integrated and seems like a fairly elegant version of this wine. Very good and should drink well for the next decade. (2233 views)
Tasted by BillyT on 6/13/2019 & rated 94 points: Incredible, too young, GREAT future ahead. Drank at Et Voile in DC. Sorry too much fellowship to write notes. Wine was 'stunning'. Glad I have more. (1522 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 6/9/2019: Funny. It's already opened up. (1450 views)
Tasted by Drankard on 6/1/2019 & rated 93 points: A big wine that’s rich on the palate with firm tannins. This has the structure and depth for a nice future. Does not have the elegance of the Beze and much more interesting than the Caillerets. Very good! (1278 views)
Tasted by MattMauldin on 5/15/2019: France and Italy - May 6 to May 10, 2019: Aromas of black raspberry, dusty spices and provincial herbs. Big rangy structure, dense and powerful, with dusty berry, broken stone and spice notes. Masculine in style, thick tannins with polish. Good depth and length. Needs time. (3536 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 4/7/2019 & rated 94 points: Opened last night. This is a beautiful wine. Solid ruby with excellent legs. Deep, pretty nose full of character and personality. Lovely spice and red and black cherry. Full and rich palate, hard to believe it is so accesible already. Should only get better, but already very impressive. 5-13-17-9: 94/100. (1217 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 6/23/2018: More oak than I'd prefer but there's a remarkable elegance underneath it. A graceful wine that will likely be very special with time as the oak simmers down. (1935 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 2/25/2018 & rated 93 points: Awesome wine. Only needed and hour or so and the nose just jumped from the glass. Red cherry and pit aromas, mixed with licorice and salt spray. Clean palate, surprisingly accessible. Fine tannins on the background. Finish simpler than the nose, but I suppose due to youth. I have limited experience in Burgundy but this was a show stopper for us. Why am I buying Cali Pinot again?
From 375. Thanks Mike! (2176 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 11/18/2017: Savory and meaty and tight. (2398 views)
Tasted by BillyT on 10/23/2017 & rated 91 points: Ok, again, infanticide but wanted to try again. Seems like it was backsliding in that the acidity was unresolved and tannins pronounced even after double decant. Only had a glass or two.

Today (day 2) it was excellent. Balanced, still high acidity, but flavor profile reminded both my wife and I of a good CdP.

Take away, leave it alone for at least 3-5 years and it should be incredible. (2130 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
