Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 145 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Winecity on 2/20/2024: Very good, everyone loved it. (519 views)
Tasted by cobystilp on 2/4/2024 & rated 89 points: The young fruit is gone and the secondary characteristics are starting to appear. I'm a fan of this younger. (495 views)
Tasted by manemis on 12/16/2023 & rated 89 points: Have had a few about a decade old WS now and feel like they are a bit over rated. Decent cali Pinot but not really worth the price premium vs an ABC or Sandhi. (563 views)
Tasted by Mad Dane on 10/7/2023 & rated 93 points: Brilliant! (644 views)
Tasted by Ismann on 8/19/2023: Agree with all the recent comments that this is transitioning/thinning/fading from fruit forward. But still pretty delicious nonetheless. (696 views)
Tasted by Winokdub on 7/17/2023 & rated 93 points: Still tasting great. Probably getting toward the backend of the "the window" if you like some fruit to show. (662 views)
Tasted by BigChalice on 7/9/2023 & rated 91 points: Cherry and raspberry. Light and very enjoyable with a little earth as it developed with air. Not a ton of complexity but good typicity, some mild cherry cola. (657 views)
Tasted by timdrex on 12/22/2022 & rated 92 points: Starting to wane a bit and losing its big fruit--still there, but not dominant. Raspberry notes at the front carry into the fairly long finish. Medium weight. (1141 views)
Tasted by vino_per_tutti on 12/14/2022 & rated 89 points: Sadly, this may be at an end. Well cared for, but past its prime. Mostly cherry juice with some black tea notes on the thin palate. Always have enjoyed this particular bottling, but afraid I held it too long. Drink up. (991 views)
Tasted by underwds on 6/11/2022 & rated 90 points: Deep ruby with a little brick around the edge. Luxurious mouthfeel, with strawberry and raspberry fruit. Light oak that lingers on the finish. Lacks some complexity, but the notes it does hit are spot on for a CA style Pinot.

3/10/2023 Still has that strawberry and raspberry fruit, but a little thin across the tongue. Not much finish. Maybe time to drink the last bottle now. (1630 views)
Tasted by DCD Delaware on 2/23/2022: Consumed in error (1715 views)
Tasted by Winokdub on 12/11/2021 & rated 93 points: Drinking great right now. Yum! (1995 views)
Tasted by Naso on 12/5/2021 & rated 93 points: Wonderful medium body strawberry raspberry PN. Great time to drink (1664 views)
Tasted by Djfermentation on 9/10/2021 & rated 95 points: A wonderful experience as the wine got air. Soft, earthy, red and medium fruits. A mid weight Pinot with fine tannins that went quite well with our bacon cheeseburgers. Everything I look forward in Cali Pinot Noir (2119 views)
Tasted by brasstab on 8/23/2021 & rated 94 points: Even better this time. Silky and bright all at once. Wrappy tannins and a forever finish. Drank over two days. First with kale salad and garlic-heavy pork, second night with garlic/butter cod. Nailed both. (1662 views)
Tasted by Barry Notes on 7/5/2021 & rated 87 points: P/double decanted. Clear, deep purple color, dark stained legs. Powerful nose. This was hard to identify as Pinot. No fruit on front end, very dark berry flavor profile, rich, extracted, no bright fruit at all. Not bad but surprising, possible off bottle. Long finish, seemed a bit over the top. $74 winery direct. (1511 views)
Tasted by brasstab on 6/21/2021 & rated 92 points: Bright red fruit and intense acidity. A complete joy. (1409 views)
Tasted by eschuldt on 4/18/2021 & rated 93 points: Strawberry, really nice. (1697 views)
Tasted by Winedad53 on 3/28/2021 & rated 90 points: Strawberry fields forever! The color, nose and front-end flavor of this wine scream red ripe strawberry, followed up by parade of rhubarb, glycerine and menthol before a slightly weedy hint of bitter asparagus sneaks in on the finish. (1421 views)
Tasted by Dnacabernet on 3/18/2021 & rated 92 points: I opened this bottle and let it sit for an hour and served it out of the bottle. The wine drank well and demonstrated a one-dimensional but lively classic Russian River profile - definitely on the darker, fruit-forward end of the spectrum. QPR at $65.00 from the winery is fair - you are paying a premium for the nameplate. I can see this bottling staying energetic for at least another year or two. (1410 views)
Tasted by Contentmands on 11/28/2020 & rated 61 points: Bottle was bad (1523 views)
Tasted by PinotPaul on 9/26/2020 & rated 91 points: Very nice but not as good as the 2013. (1651 views)
Tasted by levinml on 9/18/2020 & rated 93 points: Both the Eastside and Westside are a cut above the other WS cuvees (other than Rochioli of course). Expensive but worth it. Lots of body and flavor with long finish. Enjoy anytime. (1510 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 8/29/2020 & rated 94 points: Despite its young vintage, it’s surprisingly drinking very well. It’s my first time drinking from William Selyem at MBS Cut. Rather sweet, cooked red fruits, some spices and flora. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin. A very good quality Pinot Noir. (1590 views)
Tasted by RonT on 7/26/2020 & rated 97 points: Last night we had a Williams Selyem 2015 Terra de Promossio that was incredible. Today’s bottle was great, but a step down. Dark cherry, almond and a touch of strawberry. While it was great, it is a step down from last night. (1664 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
