Tasted by HandmadeHomemade on 4/25/2022: slow ox, no decant. Aromas of black cherry, creme de cassis, and some herby flowers (lavender, fennel??) potpourri, spent coffee grounds, moderate bricking, the wine smells a bit sweet/porty without any booziness. In the mouth, the wine is round and opulent, tannins completely resolved. Full body, med- acid, low tannin. Pretty one noted on the palate: cherry cordial damp earth. Again, kinda porty. Seems a few years (5+) over the hill. A departure from some of the early-mid-90's Bernardus' which are still drinking well in their maturity, this is lacking that complexity. The wine seems like it made to display the later picked, fruitier, softer, early drinking style of California cabs. Dumped on day 3. (663 views)
Tasted by Alfaro on 4/15/2018 & rated 92 points: Decanting made all the difference!!! (1699 views)
Tasted by HandmadeHomemade on 5/1/2017: A little too sweet and syrupy for my liking, also maybe a bot over the hill. Seems like they picked late and used too much new oak.

5 days later...

Ok, so maybe this wine isn't so disjointed and sloppy. Amazingly, the wine lived and improved for 5 days after leaving the bottle closed in a cool place. The vanilla/oak and cherry syrup blew off, and revealed that classic Marinus that I love. Notes of ripe fruit, herbs and firm tannins hold this wine together, while the fruit acid tells me that this wine has a very long life ahead of it. (728 views)
Tasted by HandmadeHomemade on 3/3/2017: Drinks much like a Napa cab, juicy red and black fruits, velvety tannins, full bodied and a shiney, opulent color. I think this wine has a few good years left in it- the wine when opened was still very fresh and vibrant; the color of the wine barely had any bricking on the edges. This one drinks a bit different than the other Marinus' of earlier years, more new world. That makes me a little sad... (734 views)
Tasted by drdolytle on 12/4/2015 & rated 88 points: Very flat upon opening. Opened up nicely once decanted (2903 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 8/14/2015 & rated 89 points: Dark red in color, tart, red fruit, some slight smokiness and dusty flavors, softened tannins, fairly light in intensity and cigar tobacco on the finish. Hint of pencil lead early on in the flavor profile. (2783 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 10/14/2014 & rated 88 points: Dark red. Mature Cab blend with evolved tannins, decent depth of fruit and some savory notes. Very good overall. Ready to go now. (3178 views)
Tasted by Rednorthstar on 10/21/2013 & rated 85 points: This was my second, and last bottle. Not much of a nose - mostly a thin wave of alcohol heat coming through. Some elegant, old world bitter cherries on the palate. Not much tannic structure, with a thin mouthfeel. Tasted the way I remembered my last bottle, despite an additional several years of age. I can see some people like this wine, but not for me. (3711 views)
Tasted by 83jg on 4/13/2013 & rated 91 points: Took awhile to open. Bought on trip to Carmel. Prosciutto wrapped scallops. Very good! (1279 views)
Tasted by Cphofmann on 10/27/2012 & rated 88 points: Cloudy and purple. Nice aromas of vanilla and toasted oak. Soft, round tannins with a little black fruit left. At or past peak, drink now. (3790 views)
Tasted by mcubed on 9/24/2012 & rated 85 points: Over the hill and fading fast. Very little character remaining. (1493 views)
Tasted by petitblanc on 9/21/2012 & rated 90 points: Still dark and youthful. On the nose, a faint hint of oak remains, with cherry fruit that is shaded by a moderate brettiness, a little alcohol, and an interesting raw lamb note. Similar palate, with smooth tannins growing through the shortish finish. This needed an hour in the glass to come around, and the overall package was very nice. Drink now or hold to see how this develops. Brought to L.May in Dubuque by Davesace. (2877 views)
Tasted by ecola on 5/29/2012 & rated 89 points: Silky, soft, and smooth at this stage. Well fused flavors of red cherry and plum. Tannins almost resolved. Drink now. Very Bordeaux like. (2861 views)
Tasted by joermcclendon on 2/12/2012 & rated 90 points: Decanted for an hour or so. Great taste and aroma. Regretfully, my last bottle! (2716 views)
Tasted by pdicorpo on 12/27/2011 & rated 91 points: still very good despite being past its drinking window. I tasted cherries and chocolate as well. smooth finish (1555 views)
Tasted by jcsf420 on 11/5/2011 & rated 88 points: This has either peaked and is on the downside or this was just off a bit. Still had all the attributes of the previous bottles when popped but it just faded away after an hour open. It was my last bottle so I can't verify. (2602 views)
Tasted by Darkhorn on 7/18/2011 & rated 91 points: Delicious.. Best bottle I have had. Great balance of dark fruits and a bit of barnyard funk. Wish I had more. (2104 views)
Tasted by temchugh on 5/29/2011 & rated 94 points: This was my last bottle of the 2002. Great wine. (2194 views)
Tasted by GoKimiGo on 5/9/2011 & rated 90 points: A really lovely wine perhaps near its peak. Soft tannins. Delicate fruit and aromas. Nothing dramatic or off base. A nice new world example of Bordeaux. I would buy again and recommend to friends... (2245 views)
Tasted by dontime on 3/30/2011 & rated 89 points: Similar to earlier bottles. Bright red fruit on the nose and similar flavors in the mouth. Nicely balanced and improved over the course of dinner. Nothing to complain about. (1854 views)
Tasted by temchugh on 2/20/2011 & rated 91 points: Elegant Bordeaux style blend. A good example of why these wines are worth cellaring. Nice nose of spice and mellow fruit. Wonderful taste. Enjoy now or within the next year. (2296 views)
Tasted by ecola on 2/3/2011 & rated 90 points: Very nice. Elegant flavors and aromas of red raspberries, subtle oak, and shaved chocolate. Very long finish that doesn't quit. Enough structure to go for another 5-7 years. I'm really finding my palate going towards blends. ($19) (2177 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 1/1/2011 & rated 89 points: Nice wine! A bit lighter than you would expect. Not much life is left in it, you have got to drink it ASAP! (2339 views)
Tasted by AEROSMITH on 10/17/2010 & rated 89 points: needs to be drunk right now. starting to turn the other direction.will not hold up for many more years (2113 views)
Tasted by AEROSMITH on 9/1/2010 & rated 87 points: very nice wine that is perfect right now (2165 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
