Tasted by tadams66 on 12/30/2023 & rated 94 points: Wow. This is the best white Rhône I have ever had. The complexity and finish is amazing. It had a combination of lemon, dried apricots, and beeswax. It also had a viscosity and mouthfeel that was beautiful. It was still fresh and young so will last many years from now but it is in a good place to enjoy sooner.

To put this another way, this wine is the guest who shows up wearing an outfit that is not showy but perfectly put together, it just all works. They are fun and enjoyable and a great conversationalist. The next day you just keep remembering what they said and how wonderful it was that they were there. What an enjoyable evening. (159 views)
Tasted by AlanM68 on 1/10/2023 & rated 92 points: I’ve had very mixed luck with Chapoutier’s whites. I don’t know if it’s a storage problem, a production problem or just bad luck, but a few from the 2000s have been heavily oxidised (undrinkably so - I’m happy with light oxidation but some of these reminded me of the dark days of burgundy premox).

This one, though, was in fabulous shape. Beautifully rich and rounded, really mouth filling and unforgettably huge length. I’m pretty sure I have another one somewhere but, on this showing, think I can wait a while. Let’s hope so (454 views)
Tasted by danstrings on 12/15/2013 & rated 90 points: A unique wine, and these white Rhones aren't for everybody, I thought it showed nicely.. From magnum, very youthful and just starting to darken a tad to golden color. Oily nutty nose with dried lemon/orange peel and a touch of kerosene/truffle/petrol. A sweet tea nose as well, but bone dry on the palate. Dried ripe fruit and nuttiness on the palate. Great with a truffle risotto. (4408 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 12/15/2013 & rated 92 points: From magnum - light medium lemon yellow color; oily, almond, ream nose; rich, creamy textured, almond, saline palate; medium-plus finish 92+ points (537 views)
Tasted by danstrings on 12/21/2008 & rated 90 points: An ethereally light wine of nuance. Honeyed crushed minerals on the nose, with a wet warm earth element. Crisp and silky on the palate without a ton of intensity but a very refreshing wine nonetheless. There is a touch of seashell, hazelnut and truffled honey, but just a touch. (6169 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 12/21/2008 & rated 91 points: Julie's Birthday Dinner at Dan's (Chez Dan, Palo Alto, California): From magnum - medium golden yellow color; lovely honeyed, almond, butter, lime and vanilla nose; light oily texture, a bit tight on the palate, creamy, citrus, lime, spicy green herb, oatmeal and mineral palate; tangy medium finish (2176 views)
Tasted by futronic on 11/18/2005 & rated 83 points: Pale-medium yellow colour. Aromas of marshmallow, apple, and mineral. Light-medium bodied, a little dilute/flat. Short finish, 10-15s, with white fruit. Closed, perhaps? (6355 views)
Tasted by antiwood on 10/29/2005: Austere nose. Clean fruit but minimal. Wood tannins are not in balance with the fruit and there's a hard finish to boot. This is not a pretty wine. No reason to save. (6600 views)
Tasted by gregg g on 10/28/2005: TN: EWG does Mostly N&S Rhones at Bistro K (South Pasadena, CA.): Lemon citrus notes dominate the nose. The palate shows more citrus and minerals. With it's trademark waxy texture present, the body shows some fruit though with less intensity than Hermitage Blanc can achieve. Some acid cuts through to carry a finish that clips a little at the end. Better with food. (4193 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 10/28/2005 & rated 90 points: Bistro K: Del. honey, nail polish notes from the Marsanne, light hay; poweful mth, bitter nail pol.; very unique; viscous, intense mth; lots of a’s w/long fin. Later opened up-grt. del nose, less nail p., more musky. (4190 views)
Tasted by Will on 10/27/2005: Chapoutier verticale at St John (London): Closed nose with hints of citrus and a lot of freshness. Good level of acidity in the mouth but the wine is not showing much right now and seems quite weak, especially in comparison with the 91 served alongside. Globally disappointing for this cuvée.  Tasted by Will on 4/23/2005: I got a free bottle of this from my retailer and decided to try it and see what it was worth. First of all serving temperature made a huge difference. At room temperature the wine was bland except the very powerful finish. Once chilled it was much better. To describe this wine one word comes to mind: subtlety. This is definitely not for lovers of big wines - everything, apart maybe from the finish, is understated, stealthy, flickery. I liked the nose but was a bit disappointed by the rather watery mouth (this is an issue I have with most white Hermitages). But what was really impressive was the incredible finish, really exploding in the mouth with waves after waves of different aromas. Overall it was ok but I expected more - it probably has to do with the vintage, too... (3131 views)

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

• The appellation stretches over 3 communes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.

• The soils are a combination of granite with alluvial quaternary delta deposits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the numerous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.

• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majority of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.

•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).

• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
