Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 65 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Rani on 10/29/2022 & rated 92 points: Tasted blind. Great acidity, ripe nose of red fruit and bacon, very approachable. Notes of graphite and cigar box. One of the softest Pape Clements I’ve had. (1272 views)
Tasted by lim.calvinb on 10/17/2022 & rated 95 points: Very pronounced tertiary flavors - wet wood, leather, cigar box. Structure still sound - good acidity, tannins integrated but still with a bit of chew. Drinking very well now - surprised at the quality given the vintage.

30 minute decant useful but not essential - the wine was singing right out of the bottle. (1175 views)
Tasted by vinhonotte on 2/18/2022 & rated 95 points: Deep garnet, with significant browning fading edges. Nose intense and flamboyant, with good blackberry depth and leafy stems, deep red florals as well as nutmeg and savoury meats. Tannins mostly smooth whilst giving a little bite, mouthwatering acids, and intensely flavoured of dark florals and blackberry, tree bark and leaf compost, as well as nutmeg and charcuterie. Very lengthy and complex at the back. Lovely wine! (1548 views)
Tasted by Klugi Wine on 9/17/2021 & rated 93 points: Changed a bit over the last 7 years. The bouquet pronounces the tertiary notes with some truffles. But also classic pencil shavings, red meat and some cassis mingle in the flavor profile. The palate is quite precise with nicely integrated tannins.
There is no need to hurry as it is drinking quite nicely right now. (1992 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 12/1/2018 & rated 85 points: Kreuzritter - Vol. 3: Tasted blind. Clearly identifiable as aged Bordeaux. The wine is drinking well but is without exceptionalism due to the lack of precision. And the fruit is on retreat and it is slightly dusty. I would drink up.

TN: Smoke and ash notes - these went from being a feature to fault and back to being a feature. In addition, leather, wet earth, wood and dark fruits. Aromas are fairly intense but precision is sub-par and the fruit is lacking a bit. The wine is still fresh with smooth tannins and a good balance.

Decanting: Decanted for 4+ hours but I guess 1h would do the job. (4440 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 2/15/2018 & rated 90 points: Medium/full bodied, with a spicy nose that also counts smoke, black cherry, tobacco, olives and forest leaf notes in its nuances. Soft, round and with a fresh attitude to the red fruits on the palate, the wine is at peak maturity today. (4417 views)
Tasted by Space Nine on 1/28/2018 & rated 95 points: Exquisite, classic Bordeaux. Opened about two hours before serving with a beef roast. Continued to open over the next hour. Wonderful bouquet. Cassis and plum fruit with herbs and olive on the fore palate. Medium-long silky finish. (3432 views)
Tasted by 7nuahs on 12/11/2016 & rated 90 points: KT's. Wine is very very good. Very nice after taste. I would buy it. (5088 views)
Tasted by cigar52 on 6/26/2016 & rated 92 points: Could still use a little bottle age. After 1 hour it opened into a great mineral feast. (5539 views)
Tasted by _water.into.wine_ on 5/15/2016 & rated 92 points: From a 375ml. Very mature nose with distinct barnyard. Crisp and fresh with vibrant cherries. Silky smooth but still surprisingly tannic in the aftertaste. Seems a lot older than it is. But maybe that's due to weaker vintage or half bottle. After 30 mins though this really improves. And I rate this higher than when I first had the wine. (4317 views)
Tasted by _water.into.wine_ on 5/5/2016 & rated 91 points: Drank from 375ml. Beautiful bright and translucent red. Firmly in its secondary stage. So smooth and soft. Fully integrated tannins. Yet still sticking to the gums in the long aftertaste. Feels light in the mouth yet fills out. Cherries. Chocolate and Coffee.

Drink up. No point in waiting. (3759 views)
Tasted by drboehm on 2/19/2016 & rated 94 points: Tasted blind against 1990 Sammarco : Nice dark color, deep and very similar Paulliac nose.Tabacco, coffee, lead pencil, cassis, fresh and ethereous earthy tones.Clearly left BDX!!
Very good balanced style between classic old fashioned and concentrated new Bordeaux.Good sweetness and some integrated acid in the mouth , tannic getting force after some hours decanted . Cassis , chocolate , some cherrie fruits with herbs . Not a really elegant wine , but with some nice Pessac-Power ! Needs some time decanted before drinking .
Drinking from now untill 2030 , 18,25+ Points (4113 views)
Tasted by Wine_lvr on 11/29/2015 & rated 92 points: Dark color. Nose shows tar, tobacco leaves, smoked bacon and dried meat (Beef jerky). Nice sweetness supported by a subtle acidity. Long and balanced. Drink now - 2020 (2918 views)
Tasted by Klugi Wine on 12/6/2014 & rated 93 points: Same as previous notes. Classical lead pencil and graves notes. Really good and still affordable. (3783 views)
Tasted by Klugi Wine on 10/11/2014 & rated 93 points: A bouquet of cassis, tobacco and refreshing menthol. Medium body and quite long. Very good for the vintage and should keep for quite some time (3733 views)
Tasted by Harryrappaport on 8/2/2014 & rated 90 points: Plum, blackberries, long, smooth body, with late tannic kick.
Delightfully pleasant wine. (3977 views)
Tasted by Yagil on 1/19/2014 & rated 89 points: Bordeaux tasting at Wine-Route, Savion branch (Wine-Route, Savion branch): Dark brown black
Odd stinky aromas
Full bodied, firm tannins, good acidity, rich bitter oaky flavors, long finish. Mediocre vintage, IMHO. (4901 views)
Tasted by Wine_lvr on 9/3/2013 & rated 93 points: Berries, plums and tobacco. Quite sweet and modern but very balanced and long. I like the wine it is fun to drink now. (4845 views)
Tasted by Leigh Johnson on 4/6/2013 & rated 90 points: Deep jetshot plum. Very youthful looking. Quite a pronouced nose, red berries and black hedgrow fruits. A whif of vanila too. On the palate, moderate acidity but great freshness, really quite lifted. Primary fruit flavours, brabley blackcurrents, redcurrants. A mineral streak quite typical of the Graves. Some might describe this as being a tad mean, a little thin, others, including me would describe it as femine elegance - take your pick. For a 1999 this was a delight. Just fell away a bit after being in bottle a couple of hours. (4313 views)
Tasted by Allman74 on 11/4/2012 & rated 93 points: Decanted and allowed to open for one hour. Drank along side 2000 Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste and 2009 Chateau Cheval Brun. By far the favorite of the majority. Great nose, with hints of cedar, dark red berries and leather. On the palate, nice structure with bright acidity with a long finish. Tannins were relatively soft and well integrated, a really nice wine. (4753 views)
Tasted by Wine_lvr on 9/9/2012 & rated 92 points: Dark red, thick and clear. Tobacco, licorice and earthy Pape Clement nos, a tick sweeter though than in other vintages. Long finish, with dark fruit and chocolate. Fun to drink now but will keep for at least another 15 years. (4922 views)
Tasted by Leigh Johnson on 8/12/2012 & rated 92 points: Decanted for one hour. Served 15 degrees. The first things that hit was the extraordinary aroma. Very pronounced, floral aroma. A sweet smell followed by cedar and black fruits. On the palate, bright acidity, uplifted and fresh. Tannis soft and well integrated. The palate shows a creamy touch of oak, of a young wine but very much in balance. Sweet cassis, damsons and a nuance of mint. A long finish. For a poor vintage this is exceptional in that context and very good indeed by any other standard. Can be drunk now with pleasure but plenty of life and unbfolding to come. (4324 views)
Tasted by Deloos on 7/30/2012 & rated 91 points: Super! Zacht veel beter dan eerdere pc99 ?? (3796 views)
Tasted by Deloos on 6/10/2012 & rated 79 points: Below average botlle (3599 views)
Tasted by Deloos on 5/13/2012 & rated 84 points: Nice Wine but maybe a bit over its best years ! Drink now (3093 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
