Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 23 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ShubyLee on 2/26/2021 & rated 92 points: Floral and cedar on the nose but lack of fruit in the mouth. Strengthen tanning still works and cedar spice lasts, only some earthy and forest taste shows it's a Piemonte. Gaja was eager to show the Bordeaux like structure but didn't dig out the potential of the Nebbi. Maybe it's a great balanced Bordeaux like wine at its peak but not as now. Not even as lovely as a 1995 Rotebourf I've tasted. Not as expected. (1397 views)
Tasted by wlayne on 9/18/2020 & rated 92 points: Beautiful bottle, gorgeous nose, graceful on entry, resolved tanins, drink up. (1472 views)
Tasted by acyso on 12/14/2019 flawed bottle: HDH auction at Spiaggia; 12/13/2019-12/14/2019 (Chicago, IL): An abnormally long cork that did less than nothing for the bottle given how it was riddled with TCA. (3136 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 11/15/2019: A bit unresolved and four-squared. (1949 views)
Tasted by Tony Ling on 10/4/2019 & rated 93 points: 11 hours upon opening into Zalto Universal glass (“Leaf” day): Medium ruby to the eyes.

Acidity seems slightly more pronounced, leaner in body compared to the 1993 San Lorenzo.

Still some wooden notes like the San Lorenzo. Good balance.

93-94 points. (1822 views)
Tasted by ovenmitt on 4/6/2019 & rated 93 points: This seemed past prime when it was first opened. After an hour or so, it opened up to show wonderful licorice, rose petal, mushroom, and strawberry notes. The tannin has definitely softened, but the wine is in a wonderful balance right now. Very nice wine from a great producer in a mediocre vintage. (997 views)
Tasted by WildeMeeuw on 10/1/2016 & rated 82 points: Kleur: Robijn rood met duidelijke ontwikkeling naar oranjebruin. Parker had gelijk ;-) 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 8 + Smaak / Afdronk: 12 + Algemeen / potentieel: 7 = 82/100

Google Translate:

Color: ruby red with clear development to orange brown Aroma / bouquet:. Fragile tertiary bouquet with clear tones of soy sauce, Maggi and Madeira. Dusty. Taste / Finish: Slightly oxidised acids and soft tannins, long - a little drying - finish. This wine should be drunk a few years ago. General / potential: According to Robert Parker drinkable until 2012. Parker was right;-) 50+ Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 8 + Taste / Finish: 12 + General / potential: 7 = 82 / 100 (2158 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 11/7/2013 & rated 89 points: Farewell to a Friend...With Some Wines He Would Have Enjoyed (A Tavola - Chicago IL): Nice red fruit that is fairly advanced on both nose and palate. Supported with good spice, but there was both a firm and shrill Character that detracted from the wine's overall pleasure. Perhaps unsuccessfully trying to overachieve in context of the vintage? (4351 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 5/24/2013 & rated 87 points: Not much fun to drink, unless you enjoy acidic, under-ripe, tart red fruits and dry textures. Where was the pleasure? It was much better on the nose than the palate. That being said, I was happy when the next flight was poured. (4214 views)
Tasted by danielk168 on 4/30/2013 & rated 88 points: Bottle decanted for 3 hours but nothing much exciting happened. An off bottle perhaps? (3853 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 2/11/2012: Dinner at Brasa. No formal note taken but another example of how underrated the '93 vintage is in Piedmont. (3651 views)
Tasted by Gian on 9/3/2011 & rated 93 points: Rosso rubino, bottiglia perfetta senza un minimo di deposito. (3914 views)
Tasted by G SQUARED on 10/9/2010 & rated 93 points: Beautiful. Drinking very well now with a chance of drying out if you wait too much longer. However, fruit begins tonopen after about 30 in a decanter. Lots of smoke and truffles. (4335 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 9/18/2009 & rated 92 points: Purple in color, this wine was muscular but also well balanced. Approachable now and well integrated, but with a lot of time left to develop. Nice notes of dark chocolate, truffles and minerals followed by a long finish. Another nice 1993 from the Piedmont. 50+13+12+8.5+8.5 = 92 (3199 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 11/22/2008 & rated 91 points: Dinner at St. Jacques. Dark ruby in color and highly aromatic on the nose. More tannic that the last time we had this in August and showing a little less fruit from this bottle ( same case ). Very much on the floral & tar side of Nebbiolo tonight. Long but searingly tannic finish, I think this needs more time. This wine went through an amazing transformation when Lil brought out an impromptu intermezzo of the finest veal ( osso bucco ) stew I've ever had showing a trememndous depth in the wine with fine orange rind flavors and a great softening of the tannins. 50+13+12+8+8 = 91+ (3657 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 8/9/2008 & rated 95 points: Dinner at Mazzi, Leola, PA. The waiter had quite a bit of trouble with the cork but luckily this was no indication of the shape of the bottle's contents. Effusively floral nose that jumped out at us as the wine was poured into a decanter. Strong sense of minerality ran through this wine. Was lovely on the first few sips before our food arrived but was really elevated by pairing with very good Italian food. An excellent match with the Antipasti/Charcuterie plate as well as with the pork & duck entrees. Tannins are still there but are nicely resolved, not rough at all. Very long finish. This bottle was in a beautiful place right now with a bright future ahead of it as well. These '93s are highly underrated. 50+14+13+9+9 = 95 (3114 views)
Tasted by espia on 10/6/2006: Elegant wine, but characteristic Nebbiolo aromatics very muted. Not worth price (3045 views)

Gaja

Producer website

Located in the Tuscany and Piedmont regions of Italy, Gaja makes collectible Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay wines, including the Langhe Conteisa label. Gaja wines are among the highest-rated in all of Italy. It is perhaps best known for its Super Tuscans, which are some of the most elegant on the market. However, the estate also makes top-quality wines rooted in Italian tradition, such as Barbaresco. It is perhaps the most lauded Barbaresco producer today.

Although the estate produces 18 different wines, the production is low at just 350,000 bottles per year, making these wines very rare. The best Gaja vintages include 2018, 2016, and 2015 as well as historically well-performing vintages such as 2013, 2011, 2010, 2008, 2004, and 2003. Many of Gaja’s best vintages have received perfect scores from critics

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Sorė Tildėn

The eight-acre Sori Tildin vineyard was acquired by Gaja family in 1934. "Sori" means a hilltop with a southern exposure; "Tildin" was the nickname of Angelo Gaja's grandmother, Clotilde Rey. Through the 1995 vintage, the Gaja single cru Sorė Tildėn was labeled as Barbaresco. However, starting with 1996 Gaja formally chose to eschew the DOCG requirements for Barbaresco (for example, by blending Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon into the wines when only Nebbiolo is allowed in Barbaresco DOCG) in favor of the more humble Langhe DOC appellation. What this means is that these wines are defined two ways with 1995 and older as Barbaresco and 1996 and newer as Langhe DOC.
