Tasted by hutch on 1/26/2007 & rated 84 points: Opened day before. First, I've got to admit, that when I'm drinking a bottle of wine for around $10, I want it to be fairly simple. Fruity, easy to drink, quaffable. That's what $10 bottles of wines are for, in my opinion. So using that theory, this is a nice bottle of wine. It's all about bright fruit, little tannins, and almost nothing else going on. Simple and fruity. Also, went terrific with some slow cooked BBQ beef ribs. This isn't a very nice syrah, but it's a nice $10 bottle of wine. 'nuff said. (1669 views)
Tasted by strattoncherouny on 10/28/2006: Similar experience as previous bottles but with a little more of an earthy spice profile and added espresso/chocolate notes. (1753 views)
Tasted by strattoncherouny on 8/16/2006: 4/5 stars. One of the best of J.Lohr's estate series wines. Attractive nose of leather, dried berry, flower and spice. Smooth mouthfeel with refined tannins followed up by cherry, clean red to dark berry fruit, and peppery undertones. Easy-spicey finish that lingers. Evolves well with time. Plays nicely with others. Looking forward to day 2. (1839 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
