Community Tasting Notes (average 91.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 11 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Barnaby33 on 5/5/2013: Fully mature and balanced. This particular bottle wasn't nearly as oaky as the last. (2189 views)
Tasted by Elkcims on 2/13/2013 & rated 95 points: Very integrated, extremely enjoyable. (2384 views)
Tasted by Barnaby33 on 8/12/2010: The fruit and tannins are integrated nicely. Give it half an hour or an hour to aerate as there was some astringency that need to blow off. There has been more bottle variation in the 96 than any other year of Oakford I've had. (2793 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 3/21/2010 & rated 91 points: The tannins have smoothed out and this has become a very nicely integrated cab. Black cherry and a velvety mouthfeel, with a medium finish. I don't see this improving further. (2839 views)
Tasted by iar on 8/18/2009: This wine is drinking surprisingly well. The color is spot on, and the nose and taste are very pleasing. Not a huge wine by any standard. However, it's very enjoyable and probably drinking at or near its peak. Lots of cherry and a bit of chocolate, with a long and delicious finish. Enjoy! (3104 views)
Tasted by rothdog on 2/23/2007 & rated 91 points: Bouquet of dried cherry, bramble and a hint of leather. Silky, firm tannin. Foresty and untamed on the palate. (1686 views)
Tasted by rothdog on 1/12/2007 & rated 91 points: Smooth, rich and ripe, this garnet colored wine has really come into its own. Chocolate, scorched grasses, cherry reduction, vanilla and saddle leather. Tannins have mellowed out and are very well integrated. Although a bit thin on the attack, the wine broadens on the palate and has an amazingly rich and very long finish. Would merit a higher score if it had a bit more weight and tannic presence, but this is clearly an extremely well made "reserve quality" wine. (1712 views)
Tasted by ajjar on 12/11/2004 & rated 89 points: I have tasted this each year since its release. Heidi Barrett's 1996 effort has now achieved a balance and ripeness which it probably won't exceed. The fine tanins of its birthright are still evident, giving a lovely context for the cherry, chocolate, vanilla, subtle spice and oak flavors. Did not decant, and while there was a modest opening within the first 30 minutes out of the bottle, the wine did not transform or evolve enough to have rethought decanting.

If you got'em, drink 'em, its well ready now and for another year or so. (1835 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
