Tasted by Wine_lvr on 2/10/2014 & rated 90 points: Tasted blind: Nose of tar and currant. Everything is a bit one dimensional and short. Overall a good wine, nicely balanced and very enjoyable but just a bit on the light side. Drink now (738 views)
Tasted by leadpencil on 11/21/2012 & rated 93 points: Medium bodied. Blackberry, brambles, mocha (1060 views)
Tasted by paulst on 7/15/2012 & rated 88 points: Cherry-blackberry fruit; decent balance and texture. (1151 views)
Tasted by vegaswino on 8/23/2009 & rated 91 points: Nice as all the Nickel and Nickel Cabs are. Great Howell Mtn. fruit. Definitely peaking. Would not hold on to much longer than a year. (1700 views)
Tasted by DanR on 6/7/2009 & rated 89 points: Notes of black currant, black olive, cedar, and green bell pepper. Surprisingly lithe, not as dense and thick as other N+N wines of this vintage. This wine is showing well at this state in its evolution, but it still has a tannic backbone that I think will help it continue to improve for 3 or so more years. (1941 views)
Tasted by paulst on 3/31/2008 & rated 88 points: Cherry raisen start with water and acidity with tough tannins and unbalanced taste with a light finish. (1482 views)
Tasted by last chance on 12/31/2006 & rated 89 points: New Year's Eve at Seaside, OR; 12/29/2006-1/1/2007: Barnyard nose that turned to earth and something like cedar. Earthy flavors with dark fruits in there as well. One of the more enjoyable Howell Mountain wines that I have had - but that distinctive earth flavor was still present. (1871 views)
Tasted by jflegler on 12/17/2006 & rated 87 points: my experience with this wine has been varied...mostly disappointing...this bottle was unbalanced...too much acidity (1642 views)
Tasted by jflegler on 8/10/2006 & rated 90 points: first few bottles i had of this over last 18 months produced mixed results...i think the couple years of sleeping has brought this wine together nicely (1719 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 11/25/2005 & rated 88 points: Wine was good but not great. Took a 30 minutes to open up. Cherry and raisin fruit, hints of leather and tabacco. Needs to be a bit more balanced. Slightly acidic and little high in alcohol for my taste. Not enough tannins and fruit to offset acidity. (1891 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 4/27/2005 & rated 90 points: I tried this with the 2001 Rock Cairn which I liked better. This had a deep red color and long legs. Medium to full body but without the intesity of the Rock Cairn. Still a very nice wine though. 90 points. (1877 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/3/2004 & rated 88 points: Nickel & Nickel visit and tasting (Napa Valley CA): Tasting at winery. Slightly floral start with lots of dense black fruit. Smoky blackberry and curran ton palate with plenty of new oak spice. Long finish shows power and some interesting long-term cellar-worthiness. (614 views)

Nickel & Nickel

Producer website

The Nickel & Nickel winery, founded in 1997 but born from a tradition of exceptional winemaking, is devoted to creating wines that articulate the singular expressions of the vineyards in Oakville and beyond.

Established by the partners of Far Niente, Nickel & Nickel is based on a philosophy of producing 100 percent varietal, single-vineyard wines that best express the distinct personality of each vineyard. The winery’s current releases include Napa Valley Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Russian River Valley Chardonnay, Syrah and Zinfandel.

Nickel & Nickel represents a distinct departure from the flagship Far Niente estate wines that are produced from a combination of vineyards and varietals. The partners also felt it necessary to have a winemaker devoted to each winery – Far Niente, Dolce and Nickel & Nickel -- in order to produce the quality wines that are their hallmark. These factors, along with a noticeable upsurge in the market’s interest in vineyard-designated wines, led to the launch of Nickel & Nickel as a separate brand.

California Wines (Wine Institute of California)

California is one of the most diverse wine regions in the world, with almost 100 grape varieties grown in over 100 viticultural areas, including dozens of different microclimates and soil types, as well as a very individualistic set of winemakers, many with international experience, which adds to and deepens that diversity.
