Tasted by ginfizz on 6/25/2016 & rated 88 points: Going downhill on this showing...OK but tertiary and shortish. Medium to light bodied. Complex, but not that satisfying. (3913 views)
Tasted by redz on 12/19/2015 & rated 92 points: very nice full bodied cab. kudos to those of you who held on to it (4067 views)
Tasted by nytiger on 12/30/2014 & rated 92 points: A 3 L purpose made deeply "carved" bottle from my 35th college reunion, in my cellar for 10 years. I read the last 2 tasting notes and since I have 30 folks over tomorrow opened it tonight to sample and enjoy it. Fine clear garnet color to the edge. 30 minutes after uncorking at cool cellar temperature. Fine cab nose-spice. Full bodied. Fine cab flavors-some earth. Nice long finish. (4687 views)
Tasted by BlancdeBlanc on 9/21/2014 flawed bottle: Way too old. sour, old, tired, tartrate crystals, acidic, flat (4852 views)
Tasted by wino121 on 8/13/2014 flawed bottle: Stewed. (4959 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 2/21/2012 & rated 92 points: 2001 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon Retrospective (Meadowood, St. Helena, California): Bricking medium dark red violet color; maturing, appealing, ripe cassis, black currant, mineral, earthy nose; tasty, poised, black currant, mineral palate; medium-plus finish (3103 views)
Tasted by bvanbower on 12/27/2011 & rated 90 points: Magnum served with roasted leg of lamb with a rosemary garlic marinade and it held up to that beautifully. Mount Veeder continues to be one of my favorites. Decanted one hour ahead. Opened nicely. Not too much time left in the quality drinking window. (4315 views)
Tasted by bwillia on 2/23/2011 & rated 90 points: Very nice. Fully resolved but the fruit has hung in there boldly. Nose is classic and very expressive. Color is bricked. Nice plum with a dustiness. (4568 views)
Tasted by williamswhine on 2/5/2011 & rated 91 points: Wine has held up nicely. Dark inky hue, dark berries, cedar/oaky nose, little vanilla. Remember drinking this bottle for the first time years ago-- worth opening and drinking. (4154 views)
Tasted by esb on 11/6/2010 & rated 88 points: Initially not together, shy old fruit and abundant soft textured tannin. Much better after three hour cool slow O, with fruit of tar, old tobacco and barnyard. It reminds me of Brett but it may be the way the fruit has aged. Most importantly, the fruit is enjoyable although not entirely clean. It has good structure, medium body, silky smooth texture and a good lingering finish. Don't wait on this, but it needs air and is not as fragile as the fruit suggests. Not up to expectations but a good glass nonetheless. (4267 views)
Tasted by mjorlando on 6/15/2010: great pairing w/ grilled leg of lamb w/ lemon pepper and thyme (4156 views)
Tasted by ginfizz on 4/5/2010 & rated 89 points: Similar to the last note...tea, sweet tobacco, hints of dried sweet herbs, touch of dusky cassis. Dry as a bone. I guess this really is a "second wine". I think I will stick with the "Reserve". Drink up or hold if you think this will blossom like a '75 Bordeaux, but as of now I think the fruit done left the station. (3148 views)
 Tasted by oldgrowth45 on 1/26/2010 & rated 91 points: 50 + color=5/5; nose=13/15; flavor& finish= 15/20; overall= 8/10 = 91.
I scored this a bit higher than other recent entries. One hour decant. Color is a rich, clean, bright maroon. The legs are thick and slow. The nose is very clean and fresh: dark berry fruits, hot asphalt, a little cedar, wet earth on the end. All the smells are clearly delineated, with good persistence and depth. The initial palate almost threatens to go fruit-bomb at first, but the initial blast of fruit quickly recedes to make room for a mighty tannic punch and tertiary notes of graphite, olives, fresh herbs and loam. As noted by other tasters, the tannins are strong, but they're clean and they leave room for other flavors (I personally enjoy a little head shot like that). The only drawback is the finish shows signs of old age. Other than that, this is a wonderful bottle. (3236 views)
Tasted by SFWineKolohe on 1/10/2010 & rated 89 points: Drink now. Great but heading down it's slope. (3647 views)
Tasted by VCvino on 1/7/2010 & rated 89 points: This bottle was a little better than the last. Mild tobacco and cedar on the nose. Still heavy tannins on the pallate overshadowing the front end fruit. However, the finish is persistant with cherry and vanilla with a some olive tones underneath. (3454 views)
Tasted by golfwine on 9/7/2009 & rated 89 points: Proof that in the right hands, Cabernet fruit from this AVA is quite possibly the best in the country! That said, although this winery is one of the best known IN the AVA (along with Hess), neither has proven that they can maximize that fruit's potential, to its fullest (that would be left to the likes of Rbt. Craig and O'Shaunnessy). Nonetheless, the sheer structure and life remaining in this wine, exemplifies that as a key characteristic of Mt. Veeder fruit; certainly aided by arguably the most long-lived vintage of the decade (so far). I just received an email blast, offering the '05 at an unbelievable price. My experience with this bottle is nudging me to consider stocking up! (3501 views)
Tasted by ScubaSommelier on 5/13/2009 & rated 88 points: Nice bottle, but a touch overpriced IMHO. Cherries and cedar dominate. (4014 views)
Tasted by VCvino on 3/22/2009 & rated 85 points: In my opinion this wine has lost all character - dusty dry tannins, stale fruit. Used to be one of my favorites. Opened two bottles - both let me down. (3808 views)
Tasted by ginfizz on 10/15/2008 & rated 91 points: This is finally beginning to come together. Not heavy, but a crisp style with tea, tobacco, fennel, hints of sweet cassis fruit, and dusty tannins. The antithesis of a "fruit bomb", I give this one points for balance and complexity. Seems a bit pricey though. (3691 views)
Tasted by drycab on 7/13/2008 & rated 87 points: Typical Mt. Veeder wine and as usual, not to my liking. I've only tasted 1 wine from Mt. Veeder that I really liked, the Ramian Chapter 4, and usually stay away from them. This is very typical. (3752 views)
Tasted by darrel_f on 2/24/2008 & rated 84 points: Not that much here for me, heavy on the cedar and the fruit does not shine through, finish is rough and seems hot. Many better Napa Cabs in this price range. (4124 views)
Tasted by jmull on 2/23/2008 & rated 91 points: From magnum. Popped the cork and let stand two hours without touching. Opened with blackberries, vanilla and an earthy/olive note that added complexity. With airtime, some raspberry and minty notes emerge. Midweight, with moderate, mellow dusty tannin. Medium length finish. Nicely balanced. (4129 views)
Tasted by RWilkinson on 2/11/2008: This required some air time, after 45 minutes it began to show it's stuff; nose of tobacco and spice, full of jammy fruits, flavors of spice and tasty oak, and blackberry, tannins are firm but not over the top. After 2 hours intergrated very nicely, finish fladed to fast, but solid. A nice surprise, happy to have a few more to compare in later years. (4106 views)
Tasted by VCvino on 12/29/2007: Preferred the 2002 over the 2001 in side by side. (4310 views)
Tasted by ginfizz on 12/21/2007 & rated 88 points: Nice. Medium weight nose of tobacco, cassis and some funk. Taste of tart cassis with cranberries, oak, decent finish. Seemed to open up after two hours. Not a lush example by any stretch. Seemed leaner than I thought it would be. Try again in 6 months... (4206 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
