Community Tasting Notes (average 90.6 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 30 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by WinyLife on 5/4/2021: Decanted
Cork was brittle
However, nice perfume notes especially after an hour or so. Balanced but fading fruit (771 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 12/9/2012 & rated 91 points: Visit to Arista (Arista Winery, Russian River, California): Medium cherry red color with .5 millimeter clear meniscus; floral, roses, raspberry nose; tasty, tart cherry, tart raspberry palate with woodsy notes, firm tannins yet and medium acidity; medium-plus finish 91+ points (726 views)
Tasted by grantyerke on 12/26/2011 & rated 90 points: Bright cherries lead into a strawberry peppery finish.
Darker and more full bodied than the more elegant Pinot noirs of Oregon. (3425 views)
 Tasted by Kenmc73 on 2/22/2011 & rated 91 points: Delightful (3741 views)
Tasted by rickspicks on 8/8/2009 & rated 92 points: Ruby translucent color with a cherry, dried herbs and cedar nose. Multiple layers of deep, dark and red cherry, spice and cedar. The flavors are slightly darker and richer than the color would suggest. Medium to full-bodied with a mouth-coating feel and a medium + finish. Nicely balanced with just slightly drying tannins. Very enjoyable and flavorful. Seems to be improving in the bottle and drinking great right now. (4086 views)
Tasted by rickspicks on 5/22/2009 & rated 91 points: Dark ruby color with a cherry, dried herbs and cedar nose. Ripe but slightly tart, dark cherry flavors with a good bit of spice and a hint of cedar. Nicely balanced. Full-bodied, velvety mouthfeel with a medium long, slightly acidic finish, and some slightly drying tannins. I enjoyed everything about this wine. A classic, well-made RRV. Another winner from Arista. (4133 views)
Tasted by underwds on 2/28/2009 & rated 91 points: Plenty of cherry and raspberry fruit. Some hints of licorice. Nice balance and acidity. Finishes with a pleasant cedary fade. A little bit more heat that I would have liked in a Pinot. Full-bodied mouth feel, although it's not all the way up to plushness. A really nice value for the price.

10/19/09 Similar notes to previous, but I was more taken with how nice the mouth feel is and I didn't notice the heat/alcohol as much. Tempted to add another point to my rating. We'll see what the next bottle tastes like. (3722 views)
Tasted by billyg on 1/26/2009 & rated 91 points: Raspberry, earth, licorice on the nose. Cherry followed raspberry and vanilla. Cedar, sour cherry, black pepper on the finish. The cedar lingers for a long while. (1913 views)
Tasted by rickspicks on 1/11/2009 & rated 91 points: Popped and poured. Classic RRV pinot -- done right. Rich, ripe dark cherry and berry flavors and a bit of spice and a hint of earth in the background. Full-flavored with a smooth, lush mouthfeel and good acidity. Does not have the complexity of a single vineyard wine, but is highly enjoyable and drinking very nicely right now. I think it has the potential to improve further with more time in the bottle. (1931 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 12/15/2008 & rated 91 points: very nice pinot. Soory to have drunk the last bottle (1970 views)
Tasted by willowtree59 on 6/29/2008 & rated 90 points: Very soft, full, sweet yet elegant. Not as powerful as Arista's vineyard designates, but great value and delicious. Lovely winery as well, great staff. (2177 views)
Tasted by gutt22 on 6/13/2008: This is just a very pretty, straightforward Pinot that is classic Russian River Valley. Cherry color, which works nicely with the fragrant black and red cherry bouquet that is tinged by baking spice. Good acidity, but overall a very smooth, lush character. Finishes with a juicy burst. Drinking very well right now, although it certainly will hold for another year or two.

Tasted by billyg on 4/4/2008 & rated 92 points: Raspberry, cherry, and celery on the nose. Nice raspberry, cherry attack. Vanilla and strawberry on the mid-palate. Cedar, sour cherry on the finish. Nice. (2241 views)
Tasted by billyg on 2/8/2008 & rated 92 points: Red fruit, some forest floor on the nose. Strawberry, raspberry, cherry with some light vanilla. Black pepper mixed with the ripe red fruit on the long finish. Nice acidity. (2342 views)
Tasted by tanglenet on 1/6/2008: Opened not decanted. Restrained fruit on the nose with touches of new wood; on the palate: a dry tannic attack with strong high tone notes of cherry and a little concord grape; ends with a dry finish. Reminds me of a French burgundy. Good. (2380 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 12/28/2007 & rated 91 points: Very nice young pinot. (2545 views)
Tasted by normg on 11/6/2007: Benesch wine tasting 11/7/07 - rated second of 3 wines by most in group (2677 views)
Tasted by Dulcie and Aylwin on 10/6/2007: Turns out we tasted this once before and completely forgotten about it. However, this time the reaction was more positive I think: the nose was really opulent and full, warm and ripe; on the palate rich jammy fruit, very ripe, almost a little hot. (2650 views)
Tasted by Winetree on 9/30/2007: Complex nose, bleding aromas of dark cherries and berries with smoky notes reminiscent of cedar and cigar box. Smooth cola flavors and soft tannins add complexity and dimension to this fruit forword Pinot Noir. Layers of wild cherry and blackberry coat the mid palate of this silky wine. This easy to drink pinot finishes with lots of fruit, smoke and herbs. (2617 views)
Tasted by Dulcie and Aylwin on 7/15/2007: Deep purple red. Nose of mushrooms with floral notes. Drank early in the tasting and perhaps we did not remember it well. Quite concentrated red fruit, undercurrent of earth, good acidity. This is a good representation of the area. A better wine than we scored it in the end. (2802 views)
Tasted by Colima74 on 4/14/2007 & rated 92 points: Lovely aromas, bright red fruit on the palate, spice, and hint of smokiness. Elegant, lively acidity, great balance...really refreshing to drink. Very very nice Pinot. (2846 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 1/13/2007 & rated 86 points: Dark red color; ripe cherry nose; roses, tart red fruit, with good acidity; short finish 86+ pts. (1261 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
