Community Tasting Notes (average 90.7 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 22 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by MattJ on 12/26/2019 & rated 90 points: Still deep ruby after 22 years although lots of sediment and needed filtering. Nice pleasing if not simple barolo, if you have this I would drink up soon, although maybe there's another 5 years in this if stored well. (944 views)
Tasted by ilcalmo on 5/27/2016 & rated 92 points: My goodness, was this a pleasant surprise. Given the vintage I expected this to be fairly evolved, but both structure and fruit were still vibrant, though I wouldn't call this wine youthful either. It was showing the full panoply of Barolo flavors, including cherry, tar, roses, and herbs, with good depth of flavor and length on the palate. If you wanted to, you could probably leave this alone for five more years. This must have been a monster in its youth. (2264 views)
Tasted by cephomer on 10/15/2014 & rated 94 points: An Evening in Piemonte: Westchester Wine School: Drank at WWS Piedmonte tasting. Fairly dark (for a barolo) crimson color, appearing much more youthful than expected. Slight bricking at the edges. On the nose, floral, some leather, some tobacco. Very pleasant. On the palate, lots of eucalyptus or menthol, leather, tobacco and tar. Still plenty of fruit here--cherries & raspberries, along with somewhat resolved soft tannins. Subtle, very pretty, well-balanced & complex pour & definitely the WOTN. The superb condition of this wine greatly exceeded my expectations & all very much enjoyed it. Wonderful balance between the earthy & still copious fruit level here. Great bottle! Decant in the future before pouring. (3562 views)
Tasted by MattJ on 12/28/2012 & rated 89 points: Decanted 1 hr. Some sediment. Nice fruit on the nose. I'd recommend drinking now or over next 2 years or so, as starting to fade. Simple but a relatively pleasing offering. (4093 views)
Tasted by WDSteers on 12/9/2012 & rated 93 points: still powerful flavors of licorice and cherry with herbal notes. probably lat peak now. Paired well with Osso Buco and risotto Milanese. (4146 views)
Tasted by pacman on 12/2/2011 & rated 92 points: Great bottle.. (4243 views)
Tasted by WDSteers on 5/9/2011 & rated 91 points: beautiful , classic style with tar tobacco dark cherry (3048 views)
Tasted by Cellar Hand on 3/26/2011 & rated 90 points: Simply spectacular, Decanted for an hour, Clear dark ruby core. slight garnet on the rim. Nose of earthy, stinky cheese, subtle fruit. palate of beautifully integrated tannins and acidity. Fabulous. (2394 views)
Tasted by MattJ on 2/20/2011 & rated 90 points: Nice barolo for a normale. Ripe and still some good fruit with bracing acidity. I would say that these would be fine for a few more years so no rush to drink. (2070 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 7/26/2009: Twelve is young for a fairly traditional Barolo, but this ripe vintage wine seems fairly mature to me. Very floral notes. Warm red fruit, earth, light tar notes. Still some tannins, but I'd drink this up (2395 views)
Tasted by Nacnud on 2/22/2009: Wow. Showing great. Pretty kick ass for a normale. (2301 views)
Tasted by pgb67 on 1/6/2009 & rated 88 points: Over the course of a 4-hour meal this bottle had its moments of displaying classic barolo style (rose petals, tar) but generally I was disappointed in the lack of nose and palate - I suspect this one was in a better place a few years back or perhaps was improperly stored. (2483 views)
Tasted by sneezy on 12/27/2008 & rated 90 points: Decanted and enjoyed with Chrismas Canada goose. Complex flavors stong sense of tobacco, dark cherry, maybe cedar at finish. Long smooth finish with a bit of acid and well balanced tannins (2266 views)
Tasted by MattJ on 12/25/2008 & rated 89 points: Solid. Nothing special. Drinking well and should be good for a few more years although some acidity hinting that in it's drinking wondow now. (2285 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 11/18/2008: Medium bright red. Hint earthy, Floral and sweet cherry fruit. Nice acid. Very rich flavours. Hint of tea on the nose later. Very nice 97. (2299 views)
Tasted by Mlermontov on 10/25/2008 & rated 92 points: strawberry, lilac, mushrooms, soy sauce, plum cherry middle, quite rich with chewy and tobacco notes, still a touch tannic but in a good place now, rich long finish. YUM (2483 views)
Tasted by dougsmith on 10/4/2008 & rated 91 points: Deep ruby color, cloudy. Interesting nose of strawberries, soy and minerality. With time more floral notes came out, with a touch of tobacco leaf. Full bodied on the palate and rich, fine tannins and flavors of black cherry. (2304 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 1/2/2007 & rated 89 points: A little tight and tannic at first, but it opened
quickly. Ripe red fruit, a little herb, just a hint of tar. Nice
middle of the road Barolo (2792 views)
Tasted by Tom_B on 10/11/2005 & rated 93 points: This wine was deep ruby red in color with good color intensity, a little sediment. A very spicy, black fruit nose with a bit of green pepper. Lots of acidity, makjng this capable of aging, with medium body and a long finish. (2175 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 6/2/2005 & rated 91 points: Candied fruit with notes of basil, plum and an earthy texture. 90-91 points. (3111 views)

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
