Community Tasting Notes (average 88.4 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 71 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by IrishDerby on 12/25/2019 & rated 78 points: Well passed its prime. Not the wine’s fault, just got lost in my cellar. (1366 views)
Tasted by srh on 11/17/2018: Winebar [4 Whites, 8 Reds, & 4 *shared* bottles] from 11/16/18] (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): THANK you for sharing this, Ed! :)

N: Slightly closed; RIPE berries with toast & pyrazines, rest tough to parse

P: LM body; NICE, ALMOST swtish frt met by astringent pucker which transitions into a LONG, balanced finish with a very, VERY slight bitterness & a distinct swtness to the very, VERY fine tannins. For now & at least making its 20th, though a more experienced taster felt perhaps NOT that long. My EXC/EXC+. 90 pts WE, and the ff '06 Competition Results: Silver @ Indy Intn'l & Bronze @ S.F. Chronicle. (1925 views)
Tasted by nzinkgraf on 3/1/2014: mature fruit aromas. red vitamin fruit. earthy. med tannin still present. waxy fruit on the palate. leather. nuanced and easy to drink. Holding well, drink to 2017. (5528 views)
Tasted by teenaging on 1/2/2014 & rated 89 points: Decanted for about 2 hrs, this opened up into a smooth and mature, very lovely cab. (5777 views)
Tasted by 312 on 1/13/2013 & rated 91 points: Served at 55 degrees. Popped and poured at dinner at home. Dark black cherry. Nose was closed at first, then opened to roses, cedar and some vanilla. Medium body. Soft, rounded, velvety. Good fruit. Notes of dark cherry, cassis and currants. Light finish. This wine has aged very nicely. (7027 views)
Tasted by JB12 on 12/22/2012 & rated 89 points: - It's somewhat balanced with a medium/full body. Bright texture with a long finish - Was very good even though it was past its prime. (4884 views)
Tasted by Noir Man on 10/18/2012 & rated 90 points: While I agree with many of the previous notes on this wine, in my experience, Raymond Reserve cabernet always drinks reasonably well when young, but for a wine in this price category ages exceedingly well. I do not think this wine has shown its best yet, and do not expect it to for 4-5 more years. The beautifully made 1998 is just coming into a peak in the last year or 2, and I had some '93 that was still great 2 years ago. While I prefer their Rutherford Reserve, this is always a great value wine. (5953 views)
Tasted by 312 on 9/3/2012 & rated 92 points: Deep black cherry color. Nose of dried cherries. Medium to full body. Soft dry with well structured fruit flavors -- blackberry, cassis, black cherry and anise. Medium warm finish. (2854 views)
Tasted by 312 on 6/22/2012 & rated 91 points: Purchased in 12/06 and stored at 55 degrees since then. Popped and poured. Decanted into simple 1L carafe. Beautiful purple-ruby color. Rich berry flavors, esp. blackberry and some blueberry. Soft, mellow feel. (2802 views)
Tasted by mnoljo on 5/5/2012 & rated 90 points: still drinking well but in decline. (2849 views)
Tasted by juffer on 4/30/2012 & rated 91 points: The wine started out a bit non-descript. But with some air, it developed a very elegant nose of sour cherries, which carried through to the medium weight mid palate and onward to the relatively long and refreshing finish. It also held up well to 24 hours in an open glass at room temperature, and continued to drink well the next day. I disagree with the recommendation that this wine is approaching the end of it's drinking window. I think it will continue to age well for several more years. (1631 views)
Tasted by *Vine* on 2/19/2012: Popped and poured. Medium-plus purple/garnet. Refrained aromas of dark fruits, currant, earth, and just a hint of smoke. Medium-plus body. On the palate, this shows moderate flavors of black cherry, currant, and oak. Although overall simplistic, it's well balanced with moderate structure and should continue to age well over the next few years, if not even longer. (2165 views)
Tasted by WineHawkeye on 11/26/2011 & rated 87 points: Opaque purple, random quick running legs, limited nose of dark fruit and tannic cassis. More youthful than expected for its age, more oak less integrated than I had hoped. 87-88. (2564 views)
Tasted by Pimmer on 8/18/2011 & rated 89 points: Past it's prime but still good. Strong fruit light on finish. (2406 views)
Tasted by GundoCellar on 4/8/2011: Dina and I midweek. . . (2750 views)
Tasted by PourSomeRed on 3/22/2011 & rated 89 points: Solid napa Cab that has been made well for years. nice nose, body and finish. The wine is well integrated now and drinking well. Maybe at its peak? (2646 views)
Tasted by wabi47 on 1/8/2011 & rated 89 points: ripe round dark cherry, bell pepper; tannins in background and sl green; hints of funk; less acid than fruit. (2737 views)
Tasted by ed-d on 7/31/2010 & rated 89 points: Good color. Bramble berry & hot spice on the nose that is not exactly black pepper & with a faint hint of caramel. Soft attack of blueberry, blackberry & black currant followed by black pepper spice. The acids build through the finish. Evident heat, but this is about as good as this wine will get & it's tasty. An inexpensive Napa CS that delivers down the road. Kudos to the Raymond family. (2959 views)
Tasted by PourSomeRed on 5/21/2010 & rated 88 points: Wine is aging well. Nice nose, decent body, and finish. Good balance overall. If the tannins can integrate some more in the finish, this could be a 90. (3126 views)
Tasted by nate's cellar on 1/6/2010 & rated 88 points: nice bottle, excellent value CA cab (3369 views)
Tasted by nate's cellar on 10/26/2009 & rated 88 points: solid bottle - drinking well now. nothing spectacular, but good value CA cab (3374 views)
Tasted by Yamadori on 7/18/2009 & rated 87 points: Decanted 2 hours. This wine seems to have matured and is drinking very nicely. A little subdued on the nose but has a nice, dark fruit profile with a medium finish. Medium bodied with mellow tannins. Quite pleasant without being anything special. Bought a few of these a couple of years ago for $25 which i think isn't bad value. (3563 views)
Tasted by armchairsommelier on 6/22/2009 & rated 89 points: Decanted for about an hour. Deep garnet color. Black fruits on the nose, also a hint of vanilla. Flavors of currant, plum and cedar. Nicely balanced with agreeable tannins. Salud! (3622 views)
Tasted by wineshaman on 4/4/2009 & rated 82 points: Decanted and poured, some up front fruit, but very dry finish, that distracted from the the fruit. If this well stored bottle is any indication of the evolution of this wine, I would drink sooner than later. (3657 views)
Tasted by armchairsommelier on 3/22/2009 & rated 85 points: Popped and poured, but probably should have decanted. Nose was a bit tight, with notes of currant and pepper. Flavors somewhat subdued, as the acidity in this wine was just enough to pull my focus from the fruit. It was better with food, but still somewhat lacking in fruit. Salud! (3730 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
