Tasted by Karl Kellar on 3/20/2020 & rated 93 points: I rate this higher than others, perhaps it just needed more age. Purchased in Gigondas tasting room in 2011 or so and held since then. Surprisingly dark, youthful color. Lots of fruit, a little spice, still seemed young as there was a bit of tannin. It was delicious, wish I had another bottle or two. I'd say this was as good quality-wise as most chateauneuf-du-papes, I remembered it was good from the tasting room but I was still pleasantly surprised. If you've got any, it's delicious now but wouldn't hurt to hold it a few more years either. (1140 views)
Tasted by jeffjohnsonjj@hotmail.com on 11/9/2016 flawed bottle: Flawed. Not corked, but old and oxidized (with perfect cork). Perhaps sat on a shipping dock in the heat somewhere along the line.... (1994 views)
Tasted by The Count on 6/12/2015 & rated 95 points: excellent, rich, drinking perfectly now. (2416 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 5/1/2013: Having been disappointed by this wine the last few times I've opened a bottle, this is now in a better place than the last few awkward showings. The palate is rather condensed from its youthful size, now more direct and with less bulk, which allows the core or fruit (cherry and berry) to come on with good focus. The fruit is somewhat reduced and I can see how other tasters might find "raspberry coulis" or some such, although I don't mean to suggest that this is candied or syrupy. The tannins are refined and give the palate good grip. This wine gives the impression of a modern wine that has come into balance with time in the cellar. (3479 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 11/9/2012: This has lost the bulk of youth and is more tapered, and retains some of the modern gloss it had as a young wine. Dark in color, and the palate shows the dark side of Grenache, more dark cherry and berry than Grenache red. While I like the fact that it has matured and lost its youthful plumpness, it's not that interesting; it is not especially complex and in fact has this annoying metallic note. I thought maybe a night of air would help it, and while the tannins smoothed out over night and the mouthfeel became smoother and more welcoming, the metallic note is still present. Not a great showing. (3653 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 7/18/2012: Pretty good, but nothing profound. Has lost the bulk of its youth, much more linear and condensed. Good red fruit, but a lot of funky brett in this bottle, so much so that the fruit to brett ratio is probably one to one. I was sipping this wine over the course of a few hours, and was about to dismiss it as more interesting 2 or 3 years ago as a young, vigorous wine, now showing a slightly slick gloss (i.e., a modern wine that, with age, is less overtly modern yet still shows some polished sides). However, it then really came to life at about the three hour mark, showing juicy acidity and a lively palate with ripe, juicy fruit. (3431 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 3/12/2012 & rated 83 points: Bitter, rustic, and hard to drink. Iron notes and minerality too severe along with fruit that tasted cooked. (2870 views)
Tasted by wildwine on 1/22/2012: really good. got better second/third day. (2483 views)
Tasted by dbarco on 7/1/2011 & rated 85 points: A touch of unpleasant metallic taste, with a bit of iodine, and some bitterness. Perhaps a flawed bottle. Seems to wimp out in the mid-palate. Nevertheless, some pleasant dark fruits and a bit of spice. (2404 views)
Tasted by garambler on 6/26/2011 & rated 91 points: I took this to a friends 6/26/11 Paella dinner. It had a terrific, rich, ripe and expressive bouquet of black cherry, blackberry, anise, baking spice, mocha and cocoa aromas. The palate was smooth, round and well integrated with flavors of black cherry, blackberry, baking spice, dark chocolate and minerals. (1875 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 4/16/2011: On the first night, the palate is substantially more linear, condensed and much less broad than in the past. There is also an annoying metallic note. Much better on the second night, the wine has come together and the metallic note is gone. The fruit is showing better, juicier, more at the center. Good mix of red and black fruits, good acidity, surprisingly soft tannins on this second night. Overall, good but far from profound. (2042 views)
Tasted by ArntErik on 11/26/2010 & rated 87 points: More black than red. Interesting and delicious smell of spices, hint of cinnamon. Didn't come through on the palate. Fairly round tannins but slightly tart finish. If it's oaked it is barely discernible.
We had reindeer carvings with mushrooms in sour cream casserole, mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts. The food was a greater experience than the wine, but still - nice enough. (2523 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 6/23/2010: Baking spices on the nose, suggesting some oak influence, but the palate is not overly oaky. Vibrant red fruits on the palate, cherry kirsch, spice box and lavender. Really nice palate, showing good complexities and lively red fruits. Ripe, but not at all raisiny. The tannins seem fuzzier than the last bottle some eight months ago, yet the tannins show rather dry on the finish. This is evolving nicely.
UPDATE: this has now been open 24+ hours, and it shows no oxidation or degradation. It is, however, showing its oak on the palate, showing more of a darker fruited palate. (2469 views)
Tasted by Domer99 on 12/26/2009 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 45 minutes before drinking with cherry and port braised pork chops. The wine had great color, and showed both purity of fruit as well as some of the rhone funk that I love. sour cherries (perhaps dinner driven), cocoa, barn yard. Popped a little too early perhaps. This has time left. (2678 views)
Tasted by tzelmer on 12/23/2009 & rated 91 points: Elegant and refined. Concentrated black fruit aromas and flavors. Pretty, straightforward wine. Much more refined than most Gigondas bottlings, will seek out this winery to try other bottlings and vintages.l (2758 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 11/13/2009: Dinner at Mike and Marina's. Initially, more Rhone funk than the prior bottle a couple of months ago, which is welcome, actually, because the prior bottle was somewhat slick and glossy. On the palate, currant and blackberry, the dark fruit showing a bit more than the red fruit, round and smooth in the mouth, good weight and fullness without being too heavy, slick but not too spoofy. Doesn't show much depth or complexity; perhaps these will emerge with some cellar time. For now, a fruity, easy drinking wine. (2797 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 9/2/2009: A very pleasant surprise. Shows really good purity of fruit - dark cherries and berries - and remarkable freshness. A hint of pine on the nose. Silky tannin. A bit on the polished side, the exterior is glossy even, but I'm digging the underlying sweet and juicy fruit. Nothing rustic about this. Even Deb, who is not a fan of Grenache or Chateauneuf, loved this wine. (2867 views)
Tasted by wm3395 on 3/25/2009 & rated 88 points: Still very tight and highly acidic. A fair value at the price. The wine needs decanting but after a good hour you can see the wine a previous reviewer called "A very good example of a Gigondas." The wine is a very good gigondas. Rich cherry, coffee - the tannins are firm. (3044 views)
Tasted by subtlet on 3/21/2009 & rated 89 points: This wine is very straightforward, but well balanced. Acidic, darker fruit presents itself on the nose, along with some dusty earthy notes. The wine has a lot of the dust in the mouth feel as well, with the fruit hitting up front but fading into the earth and enjoyable tannins on the finish. I loved the 03 release, and think this wine will be quite tasty with a few more years on it. (2897 views)
Tasted by RWilkinson on 2/17/2009: A very good example of a Gigondas, drinlking very nicely on this evening. (3146 views)
Tasted by Philly-O on 8/18/2008 & rated 88 points: Opened way too soon. Too tanniny muted nose. Has tremendoues potential. Waiting at least a year to open (3130 views)
Tasted by Snookboy on 4/26/2008 & rated 89 points: Nose a bit tight. Dark cherry and chocolate. Tannins a bit strong and not fully integrated. I'll leave the other bottle a year or two. (3132 views)
Tasted by Mlermontov on 3/30/2008 & rated 89 points: David Bowler Spring Tasting; 3/26/2008-3/30/2008 (Tribecca Grill): off day for this? lots of oak, good black fruit - bot too ripe but missing something. (4352 views)

Domaine Saint-Damien

Producer website

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

St. Damien was an Early Christian saint (martyred in the year 287 A.D.), considered the patron saint of doctors. There was a chapel to his honour in the tiny hamlet of La Baumette, just outside the village of Gigondas, where Joel Saurel, the owner of the domaine, lives. The name Saint Damien for the domaine was introduced in 1979. Four generations have worked on this family estate since 1821. In 2013 Romain joined his father on the estate. The estate has been certified organic since 2012.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

Les Souteyrades

On weinlagen-info

From the lieu-dit Souteyrades on a small hill of pure gray clay soil with few stones, the 80% grenache was planted in 1948 and the 20% mourvedre was planted in 1977.
