Tasted by sh6k on 12/23/2023 & rated 98 points: Blew me away. All the expected Syrah notes — lots of pepper and leather and meat, but with the most amazing ethereal quality on the nose, the platonic ideal of a cote rotie Syrah. I could spend all day with it. Palate is restrained, good with food. (363 views)
Tasted by beatles on 10/2/2022 & rated 95 points: Fantastic wine - all that it should be. An iron fist in a velvet glove, this shos smoke, tar, bacon and a dense olive-sented fruit. Drinking a point.

Tasted by Jeff Leve on 7/3/2022 & rated 96 points: Long, exotic, rich, full and deep, the sensually-textured, red fruits fill your palate, lingering and expanding. This is drinking in the sweet spot today. If you are lucky enough to have a bottle in your cellar, now is the time to be drinking it. (2539 views)
Tasted by Rani on 3/31/2022 & rated 91 points: Tasted blind. Whiff of barnyard and manure at first. Then revealed a rather tightly wound wine. It was opened 90 minutes earlier but should’ve been opened much earlier. (1410 views)
Tasted by hargy on 10/25/2021 & rated 93 points: fascinating wine - this changed so much over the hour of its drinking although I thought the first sip was the best - one bottle left which I will leave for a while (1744 views)
Tasted by Rani on 6/30/2021 & rated 95 points: Tasted blind. It has the telltale barnyard stench that I love. Superbly balanced, tart red fruit, fine powdery tannins, wonderful. (1895 views)
Tasted by joshabramson on 5/3/2021 & rated 95 points: Delicious! Ripe strawberry and raspberry fruit, silky texture and nicely structured with firm acidity. (1914 views)
Tasted by dream on 3/7/2021 & rated 91 points: Still a very closed wine given it's 23 years of age but it's beautifully structured and seamless with excellent density and depth of black fruits and minerals. The finish is taut and lifted and seems to be holding something back although there are some notes of roasted meats and campfire. For my palate, I prefer Cote Rotie's with more savory textures and authentic flavors of violet perfume, char, baconfat and spices. Perhaps with more time? 91? (1872 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 12/15/2020 & rated 97 points: If you are a Cote Rotie fan, this is a must-have for your cellar. Silky, sexy, bright and fresh, the wine gets your attention from the start, with its smoky, herb, spice and red berry nose continuing through to the sensuous, long, rich palate filling finish. No need to decant, just get to it! (3660 views)
Tasted by Goodwine4ever on 9/28/2020 & rated 94 points: Similaire a La Landonne, un profil un peu plus sucrée, moins de fraicheur mais tout aussi délicieux et structuré. (1865 views)
Tasted by MC on 7/29/2020: Perfect fill and cork. Decanted an hour and enjoyed over the next two. Classic Cote Rotie with very nice dark fruit, leather, game, earth and some pepper. This is at a peak or just past based on this bottle, which is my last and I would be drinking up. A- (1631 views)
Tasted by pclin on 7/25/2020 & rated 95 points: PnP. ABV 13%.
Last bottle was two years ago, time to open another one. Color wise, not showing the age, still fairly dark. Expressive and floral nose, extremely perfumed. Mainly flowers with a just smidgen of dark soils. Sweet and smooth on the palate, tannins mostly resolved. Bright acidity. Finish long and lingering. No hint of alcohol, excellent balance. Different from ‘89 Penfolds Grange opened 2 days ago but just as delicious. Rostaing did very well in ‘98. (1809 views)
Tasted by Mrboudin on 3/9/2019 & rated 89 points: very dissapointing delivery from this bottle. (2327 views)
Tasted by rlove on 9/22/2018 & rated 95 points: Two-and-a-half years since my last bottle and time has favored the 1998 Côte Blonde as today this wine is everything you want in a Northern Rhône, with impressive power yet regal elegance and finesse. The nose is initially a little heavy on the black olive, but not enough to hide the gorgeous purity of fruit. Flavors of dark fruit are kept fresh and energetic by racy acidity and a mineral core. This is excellent. (2539 views)
Tasted by pclin on 1/6/2018 & rated 94 points: Clean and floral if not very expressive. Plenty of acidity and tannins but not obtrusive. Mainly soil-driven with burnt tobacco aftertaste. ABV 13% with no hint of alcohol, good balance overall. Long with good complexity. No hurry to consume this with years of evolution ahead. (2973 views)
Tasted by Mascarello59 on 11/4/2017 & rated 93 points: Finally opened the bottle after a few Coravin samples and double decanted and left for 3 hours to rest. 2/3rd was left when pulling the cork.
Out comes a different wine, open and accessible with a complex nose of deep dark fruit, licorce pastilles, smoke, bacon fat. High but not astringent acidity, with finegrained, soft tannin, some earth but also great fruit. Medium lenght but overall a treat! l So the lesson is, let wine breath and track the development over time. (3009 views)
Tasted by Mascarello59 on 9/1/2017 & rated 93 points: A new sample on 3 sep-17. Same bottle but very much more open impression this time and so much better! Could the Coravin actually make the wine breathe ever so slightly or is it just a question of mood.
Regardless this sample shows much better, both on the nose and more flavor and balance.
18 March -17. Poured a sample from Coravin and left it in the glass for 2 hours. This one never really opened up, very closed. May have done so with more time but it felt like this was either a great disappointment or in a dumb phase. On the nose some red currant and pepper, meat notes. Medium to high acidity, lean, with hidden fruit and fine tannin that have started to resolve. All in all a rather uninviting wine at this point. With the benefit of doubt i'll refrain from scoring but this bottle could end up anywhere between 88-94 in the end, even though I suspect it will be in the lower part of the range.
Bought this bottle at an auction a year ago so I have no clue how it was stored. (3750 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 2/11/2017: There's no elegant way of saying it: upon first pour, the wine smelled like a fart. Happily air transformed it into a well structured wine with rich fruit over a mineral spine. This was tied for second with '97 La Landonne for me tonight. (3377 views)
Tasted by pclin on 10/21/2016 & rated 94 points: Good bottle. Clean nose. Notes of smoked meats, dark berries and oaks. Still tannic with fresh acidity. Good length and complexity, probably yet to reach peak, will last for years. 93-94 pts. (3759 views)
Tasted by retired_and_roving on 5/21/2016: Q2 - 2016 Tasting - The Rhone! - Another taster's perspective ((The Apt)): #16 of 16 wines tasted (double-blind) at Rhone tasting. Yeah lets be honest at this point my powers of observation were significantly degraded. My notes say 2 things - young & tannic. Given that the wine is not at all young - I clearly was not on point. This one probably suffered for its place in the lineup - for me it was in the back half of the pack. (4325 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 5/21/2016: Q2 Tasting - The Rhone! (The Apt): Wine #16: Part of a double-blind Rhone tasting. Last wine of the day so the notes on this weren't very detailed. As with many of the others got the red currant. Lighter bodied. Wish could go back and try today although was finished yesterday. (4 pennies) (3950 views)
Tasted by rlove on 4/3/2016 & rated 93 points: Dark purple. Black fruit and roast meat dominate the nose, with a hint of black olive. Powerful and intense, the 1998 Côte Blonde is nonetheless is a wine of considerable finesse. Dark fruit on the palate leads to a lengthy finish. Great wine; drinking well now. (3038 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 11/27/2015 & rated 92 points: Nose: The nose is somewhat muted, but still shows off an expressive side with black cherries, bacon fat, violets, tobacco, and leather tones.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium+ acidity and chewy tannins. There is definite youthfulness to this along with black cherries, raspberries, violets, bacon fat, and some leather.

Overall: This bottle is still showing very young. There is a deft balance to it with excellent depth to boot. (3377 views)
Tasted by dream on 9/19/2015 & rated 93 points: Stunning aromatics here with notes of smoked meats, charcoal, intense dark fruits and animal fur. The palate is beginning to catch up to the nose but I think the wine is still 5+ years from optimum drinking. Smoothly-textured but gritty at the same time with flavors of black fruits, campfire char and graphite minerals. Finishes quite tannic and juicy still but it has kept improving with each bottle over the last 10 years and I say hold this for a potentially fantastic future. It's Gentaz' vines after all. 93+ (3068 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 8/30/2015 & rated 93 points: From a perfect looking bottle with a 1 cm fill, this wine had a red/purple center with light red (verging on puce) rims. The high- intensity nose took a while to open up but eventually showed violets, black cherries, Provencal herbs, and smoked meat.

This wine was rather tight and awkward when first opened. It certainly benefited from 4+ hours in the decanter. In the mouth it was ripe with rounded tannin, good acidity, and very good length. There was just a touch of excess alcohol for my taste but it was certainly enjoyable.

My overall impression is that this wine still seems a little too young. However, it is unclear to me if it has the balance to improve from here or not. (2582 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The Appellation cover three communes - Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, Ampuis and Tupin-Semons - on the right Rhône river bank, within the Rhône "département".

• Soils : In the northern part of the vineyard, the Côte Brune, consists of extremely steep, terraced slopes of ferruginous mica schists which are covered with schist sand (arzel). The Côte Blonde has a varied geology with gneiss and granite predominating at the most southern side of the appellation.

• Climate : tempered continental. Dry, hot summers and frequent rainfalls during the other seasons. History : one of the oldest vineyards in France, first developed by the Romans. It is said that during the Middle Ages, "The Seigneur de Maugiron" bequeathed a hillside to each of his daughters, one was brunette and the other fair. Thus, were born the names of "Côte Brune" and "Côte Blonde".

• Area planted : 230 hectares (568 acres), for an annual production of 8,400 hectoliters (93,333 cases). Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2,3 US tons/acre).

• Grape Varieties : Syrah (80% minimum). An addition of up to 20% of Viognier grapes in the crop is allowed.
