 Tasted by Tarpon222 on 11/23/2014 & rated 91 points: Smooth, integrated, almost too Calif. Chardonnay like. Drank alongside a 2009. While there were clear differences, h09 reminds me of a lively, tart, acidic, bright Red Shoulder which is what I have always liked. The mature "05 was very good but lacking that zest. (530 views)

 Tasted by Tarrant on 9/12/2009 & rated 89 points: Very good, but a touch hot and quite bruising from a weight perspective, one of these types of wines that when you're in the mood it's awesome, but when you're not it's awful, no in between I would say- Gold, full bodied with a nose of pear, peach, butterscotch, caramel and vanilla creme, spicy, a touch of heat, decent complexity, sweet, smooth, creamy and rich on the palate with good length (90 Points). Classic California Chardonnay on the nose, sporting an enticing bouquet of ripe pear and mandarin orange, as well as a decent amount of new oak adding vanilla scents to the mix. Much different on the palate, as the wine carries a distinct flint and stony edge, almost bitter, but by no means a distraction. Moderate acidity. Lengthy finish imparts a rich touch on the tongue, completing the arc to full circle. Definitely one to consume on the young side. (4475 views)

Nose: Toasty hazelenut, ripe apple and meyer lemon aromas.

Palate: Apple and citrus flavors, nutty and strong acidic finish that mellow as the wine was open longer.

If drinking, I would decant for 30 minutes or so to mellow out the finish. (4580 views)

Some mineral and a hint of sea shell. The best white for me of the three other chards (Kistler and Hudson). Delicious. (4758 views)

Aromas of orange blossom and sea spray followed by lemon pulp, unripe nectarines, crushed minerals, and oyster shells. A nicely detailed wine that reminds me a little of the high-end Chards coming out the area but without the oak-infused richness. Give it a few more years and it will serve as a poor man's Aubert. Producer website
John Shafer and his family founded Shafer Vineyards, located in the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley, in 1979. From the Shafers' first wine, a 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon,
their wines have won much acclaim. Today, the Shafers farm 200 acres of vineyard in the Stags Leap District, Carneros and Oak Knoll regions. Their flagship wine, Hillside Select,
is produced from selected blocks of the family's hillside vineyards and is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. They also produce Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, Merlot, One Point Five
(Cabernet Sauvignon) and Relentless (a Syrah/Petite Sirah blend), which was named #1 wine of the year by Wine Spectator's "Top 100" of 2012.
