 Tasted by europat55 on 3/28/2024 & rated 94 points: Domaine Pegau 1995-2008 Vertical: Nose: 94, Palate: 93+
My #1, Group's #1. Tasted Blind. (327 views)
Tasted by bon vivant on 2/23/2024 & rated 94 points: Earlier rumors of my demise .... well so much for that. A great mature example of a classic CNDP decanted for sediment and gave it a bout a 45 min decant which cleaned up some early barn yard notes to reveal deep elegant flavors and structured finish. Wine of the night consensus among 7 dinner participants.9 (451 views)
Tasted by MObiker on 2/15/2024 flawed bottle: I waited patiently for almost 25 years and...corked. 😞 (498 views)
Tasted by Eric on 2/10/2024: ESTG does Pegau-Palooza (Seattle, WA, USA): Unreal, just a perfect example of the 1999. This has what I call "all the Châteauneuf-du-Pape" food groups. Amazing power, balance of fruit, spice, garrigue. Most of the group thought this was the best wine of the night. It was really stunning. (1020 views)
Tasted by TWSA on 2/7/2024 & rated 90 points: Nose: rose, white pepper, Blueberry, leather
Notes: pretty classic Pegau nose and taste. Drinking perfectly now at the right age with soft tannins and a irresistable palate. This wine requires no further aging and likely will be going downhill if this is not consumed in near term. I've admired Pegau for its consistency in its lower level wines as they have delivered what exactly they should deliver over and over again - quality and elegant CNDP that's approachable both in terms of taste and price tag.

Tasted by presterjohn on 12/17/2023: Beautiful, dense but light, deep fruit, some age but still vibrant and slightly spicy. Probably not going to improve but in good form (494 views)
Tasted by Wine Canuck on 12/13/2023 & rated 95 points: A Wednesday at Dave's place: Second time tasted in consecutive days. This pours light garnet with faint bricking. The nose on this is just beautiful showing classic Pegau characteristics, blasting black pepper, seaweed, light cherry, raspberry coulis, tar, crushed rocks, burlap, grilled pork, and dry bay leaf. The palate enters on bright red and lightly kirsch-tinged fruit. Tannin is medium, acid is medium minus. The finish is lengthy replaying much of the complexity of the nose. I poured this blind for others immediately after the 1999 Beaucastel and it was enjoyable to contrast the two. My preference was for the Pegau, but the room was split between the two. Regardless, most others had this a point or two behind me score-wise. (843 views)
Tasted by Wine Canuck on 12/12/2023 & rated 95 points: Tuesday night blinds: [Tasted Double Blind] This pours light garnet in the glass with light bricking. The nose is very earthy, evolved and animal. Aromas are of aniseed, animal fur, leather, roasted chestnut, wet hay, nori, roast pork, and baked strawberries. The palate enters on the ripe, sweet baked strawberry fruit. Tannin is medium minus, acid is medium. The finish is lovely and tarry with baked strawberry, lavender, and earthy herbal components. Just an absolutely gorgeous wine. This came across to me as quite clearly Chateauneuf du Pape, and I had a strong feeling it was Pegau given the light color, whole cluster spice, and light brett. I would have guessed early 2000s or late 1990s, but I had recently sold the person who brought this a 1999, and that made a lot of sense to me, so I correctly identified the wine. (716 views)
Tasted by spillwine on 11/19/2023 & rated 95 points: Animal bien intégré, très long. (464 views)
Tasted by VAGenius on 7/15/2023 & rated 92 points: 45 minute decant. Funky bricked red color. Nose of raw, bloody meat, spiced plum pudding, barnyard, and manure. Layers of funky red fruit on the palate with peppered beef, beef bullion, and dried rose petals. Resolved tannins with tea leaf, leather, shoe polish, au jus, and a peppery loam finale. Unlike the bottle six months ago from the same source, this one came off as long in the tooth and on the decline. Drink up. (783 views)
Tasted by Musigny1955 on 7/9/2023 & rated 94 points: (Poured at dinner party at DE's house) Great fruit and vinosity, not at all hot, some underlying ripe fruit masquerading as "sweetness," forever length. Better balanced than the 2000 and 2007 da Capo's also served, but which with time fell a bit apart compared to this wine. Superb showing. Wow wine. (757 views)
Tasted by Vascular46 on 6/19/2023 & rated 92 points: Deep ruby color persists. Black fruit, on the nose and palate with some pepper and spice on the finish. Probably past peak but still enjoyable with soft tannins. (754 views)
Tasted by VAGenius on 1/13/2023 & rated 96 points: 60 minute decant. Nose of wild raspberries, roses, bloody meat, and fresh sage. Palate shows peppery smoked meat, red cherries, tart red fruit, dried rose petals and some more raw meat notes. Some alcoholic heat on the finish with dark cherries, green peppercorns, and cedar plan. This wine seems to be in a perfect place now but with the ability to hold a few more years. (1198 views)
Tasted by beatles on 11/24/2022 & rated 93 points: Some discussions whether this was corked; surely not. Old fashioned wine, smoked, beef blood, but underneath a free running fruit, pure, elegant grenache. Peaking, IMHO.

Tasted by brh_wine on 8/29/2022 & rated 97 points: All around fantastic. Ripe fragrant fruits in nose and taste. Still young and vibrant no sign of aging in this robust wine. Glad I have more. (1324 views)
Tasted by presterjohn on 7/1/2022: Rich dark spicy fruit, deep, complex, vigorous, raw tannin, peppery - on fire! In great form, needs red meat. Could last a few more years but à point, just fabulous (1258 views)
Tasted by europat55 on 3/28/2022 & rated 93 points: Classic Pegau! In a great spot right now. (1474 views)
Tasted by Brain Capers on 1/26/2021: Opened an hour before dinner, just a lovely Pegau, only 13.5. One of our many visits to the cave, and to the ATM machine across the street. Reminds me a Rafanelli Zinfandel. Loved those days of 2 checked 75 pound bags. Yum. (2433 views)
Tasted by ZionWino on 1/23/2021 & rated 95 points: The cork came out cleanly; allowed to breathe for 20-30 minutes. An absolutely exquisite CdP that was gorgeous from the onset. The initial, beautiful funk blew off after 10 minutes to reveal cherry liquor, graphite, spice, hay. damp earth,, smoke, and caramel. The tannins are mostly resolved, with a bit of grip and acidity keeping it fresh and interesting. The finish lingers on...and on..and on. In a fantastic place, right now. One of best bottles of Pegau I have ever tasted. (2223 views)
Tasted by Old Joe on 11/26/2020: I had the most unusual experience with this wine. Opted and decanted it for several hours. Wine on attempt at drinking was extremely tight and almost stringent. I was perplexed and let wine sit in carafe unsealed for 24 hours and discovered a very pleasant but strong wine that naad tons of tannins in it and a very strong finish. Kind of weird (2150 views)
Tasted by king-bing on 9/6/2020: Quite translucent. Lovely meatiness to start then settles into red fruit and garrigue. Lovely. Perhaps faded a little after 2-3 hours? (2350 views)
Tasted by adnorthup on 8/29/2020 & rated 93 points: Firing on all cylinders (2205 views)
Tasted by rm97 on 2/29/2020 & rated 92 points: Lovely
All in harmony. Great length. Tannins resolved beautifully. No rush. (1729 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 12/24/2019 & rated 92 points: Rust colored. 13.5% ABV. Savory nose of red fruits, garrigue, roasted herbs, road tar and just a touch of brett. Medium body with ample acidity. Rustic and charming. Black cherry, kirsch, blood and cracked pepper on the palate. The finish is exceptional. Great showing for a twenty year old CdP. So much to like here. Best over the next 2-3 years. (1920 views)
Tasted by rm97 on 11/17/2019 & rated 92 points: Surprisingly fresh. No rush (1733 views)

Domaine du Pégau is a beloved icon of traditionalism in Châteauneuf du Pape, crafting wines that dually epitomize the Châteauneuf style of the Southern Rhône while being unmistakably Pégau. Long owned by the Féraud family, the estate is run by the charming Laurence, a Parker Wine Advocate Wine Personality of the Year who was exceptionally well-schooled by her father Paul. Despite receiving six 100-point scores in less than 10 years, Domaine du Pégau is a down to earth specimen of Southern France hospitality.

Pégau produces three high-end Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées: the traditional Cuvée Reservée, the special Cuvée Laurence, and the incredible Cuvée da Capo (made from the best grapes in only the best years). These wines are aged in large old oak foudres for at least 18 months in the case of the Reservée, and much longer for Laurence and Capo.

Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate summarizes the house style as follows: “This superb estate fashions an old style, massive, unbelievably rich, rustic Châteauneuf du Pape. If you want to taste what the old style Châteauneuf du Pape of the forties, fifties, and early sixties tasted like, buy a bottle of Domaine du Pégau. They are rich, rustic, sometimes massive Châteauneuf du Papes made with no concession to modern-day tastes.” Furthermore, he continues “I have long been a huge fan of this estate, and have put my money where my mouth is, having purchased all of Pégau’s vintages since 1979.” Heady praise indeed from the world’s leading wine critic.

Domaine du Pégau’s wine have developed a cult-like following among savvy consumers, who adore their expressive style, unique personality and still-affordable prices for the quality and experience they deliver.

“There is a secret in the knowledge transmitted over generations.” — Laurence Féraud

Domaine du Pegau is run by Laurence Feraud and her father Paul.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
