My #4, Group's #2. Tasted Blind. (637 views)
Tasted by SpoochMan on 3/25/2024 flawed bottle: Tragically, my last bottle is very badly oxidized. So sad. The previous one was glorious. (713 views)
Tasted by beatles on 3/3/2024 & rated 96 points: Perfect fill, perfect cork. Slowly turning lighter, more transparant, certainly not forgetting it's roots. Nose is all about beef, blood garrige, tste has accvent on the minerals with the sweet La Crau Grenache playing base. At a plateau, if you like mature wine - will go on. Will drink the rest of my stash within the next 5 years, I think

Tasted by Philip67 on 2/25/2024 & rated 94 points: Great complexity here. Developed tertiary notes of red fruit compote, quite perfumed. There is leather and oak here as well. Full bodied. Low acidity, medium ripe tannins. 13.5 ABV. Great length and complexity. Drinking beautifully now, will last another decade. (966 views)
Tasted by Eric on 2/10/2024: ESTG does Pegau-Palooza (Seattle, WA, USA): Slightly oxidative on the nose, coffee, plum cake. Wow, getting more tannic, more powerful, more austere. On the whole, this bottle was showing rather closed but with incredible structure. On day 2 this is showing more roasted, deep, white pepper, sharp, focused, rather intense. (1484 views)
Tasted by burlingtonm on 2/3/2024 & rated 94 points: This showed very well at a tasting of eight CDP's and was the second best wine of the night amongst some prestigious wines. Good freshness with lots of life ahead, this is a lovely wine. (1064 views)
Tasted by Wineallover on 12/9/2023 & rated 93 points: This bottle was a but below the previous one, although from the same batch bought on release so i suspect a bit of bottle variation here. Was among the two wines of the night (preferred was Grange 02 by far!) but held well against wines like Montelena cab 1997, Les Grandes Places 2019 from Gerin or Barolo Riserva Bricco Boshis Vigna San Giuseppe 2012 from Cavallotto! So still a decent bottle obviously! Based on this bottle only, this will stay there for a few more years before slowly declining. But i know tye best bottles have a bit more time. (1125 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 11/26/2023 & rated 95 points: Thanksgiving dinner with the family, good excuse to open a nicely aged CdP. Last tasting of this vintage was 2015. Decanted for about 90 minutes, drank over 45 minutes.

Medium dark garnet color, cloudy, slight separation at the edge. A bit of barnyard/brett on the nose even post decant (consistent with last bottle), faded over the course of the time we drank it, Nose also showing dark cherry, garrigue, baking spice. Palate of black cherry, dried red fruits, currant, savory notes, baking spice, cinnamon/clove. Baking spices and sweet red fruit persist through the mid palate. Full body and long finish.

Great showing on this evening and a great pairing with the harvest flavors of Thanksgiving dinner. The wine is in a great spot, consistent with 2015 tasting, has not faded in flavor or complexity. Healthy decant is a must for this wine to get the best of it. (1326 views)
Tasted by Marcus Vin Rouge on 11/18/2023 & rated 94 points: Beautiful at this point. Very smooth, still some fruit, the meary tones have subsided. Very well intehrated and round. If you enjoy more tertiary tones and less power while still having some fruit this is a good time to drink. (1254 views)
Tasted by Discobiscuits42 on 9/11/2023 & rated 92 points: A lot of funk without frame. A pretty wild wine. Pretty much straight tertiary. Time to drink up. (1671 views)
Tasted by Colowine on 9/10/2023: Over the hill to my taste (1514 views)
Tasted by Wineallover on 4/16/2023 & rated 94 points: Stored since release. Bottle in perfect condition, perfect cork. Beautifully evolved Chateauneuf with mostly tertiary aromas. This is all velvet, no heat and no sign of being over the top at all. Will plateau here and i don’t feel in any hurry to drink the other bottles. Very happy i waited that long. Drink by 2030 (2215 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 4/9/2023 flawed bottle: Heavily oxidized. Hippo w/EWG 2001 wines (2031 views)
Tasted by Eric on 2/12/2023: ESTG does Southern Rhone and Provence (Seattle, WA, USA): Deep and mineral, pine, structured, a slow burn, smoldering. It took a while to strut, but then the real 2001 showed up. This thing has 20+ years ahead, really stunning, nit easy, not pure pleasure, impressive with so much potential. (2691 views)
Tasted by beatles on 12/31/2022 & rated 96 points: Another fantastic showing of this wine, drinking a point with abundance of beef blood, sweet Grenache, cool minerals and local feel. Remains a favorite of mine.

Tasted by liber on 11/4/2022 & rated 93 points: 5th of 12, opened 30 minutes, perfect cork and level, just slightest sense of fade compared with last bottle noted in Jan 20, nice complexity, long and persistent, fine balance, plateau, 5+ years. F+ (18).......big deposit so worth decanting! (1684 views)
Tasted by beatles on 11/1/2022 & rated 95 points: Goes from strenght to strenght, opens very cool with accent on the minerals, slowly develops more beef blood, full blooded Grenache. Drinking a point, no signs of decline.
#ElectionNight (2207 views)
Tasted by Joelene on 10/4/2022 & rated 93 points: More mature than I expected, lots of bricking, garnet color, loads of sediment. Prunes and raisins upon opening, with sweaty socks, hay, some brett, pine needles and leather. Probably a touch past it’s prime but still delicious. Drink up. (1746 views)
Tasted by beatles on 9/22/2022 & rated 95 points: Plenty of tell tale beef blood here (Johnny guessed the producer), sweet Grenache galore, smooth wine, plenty of local feel, open, mature; loving it.
#JohnnyM (2178 views)
Tasted by DanielAVTL on 9/16/2022 & rated 91 points: Very mature and obviously past its prime, and yet still very enjoyable.

Stored in ideal conditions with a perfectly preserved cork, I popped and poured this 30 minutes before dinner (braised ossobuco in red wine). Color was garnet, with some brownish notes and early bricking. Age was definitely on display.

Nose was a bit tight initially, but 20 minutes in the bouquet opened up beautifully, revealing layers of strawberry, rhubarb and damp earth. In the mouth - good structure, complex, balanced and long. Not packing power or jaminess, the cuvee displayed a medium body, with surprisingly well integrated tannins, and delicious, albeit subtle red fruit.

This Pegau probably peaked 5-6 years ago, but it's still very enjoyable, and with the Ossobuco, produced a great pairing. If you like your CDP big and bold, this one isn't for you, but if you're looking for the gracefully aged, subtle and complex version, then you'll have a good time with this one.

Drink up though, it's already past prime and might not be in a good place if you wait much longer. 91 points on the night... (1600 views)
Tasted by SpoochMan on 9/15/2022 & rated 96 points: Had two bottles of this. Corivin'd a taste from the first one and it was clearly oxidized. Then Coravin'd a taste from the second and it seemed promising, so brought it out to a group dinner at Nosh. This opened up with a bit of air and was absolutely outstanding. Super velvety in texture and all beautifully integrated; still nice red fruits and lots of secondary and tertiary flavors. Stunning. Too bad my second bottle is not good. (1486 views)

Tasted by bobdobilina on 7/25/2022 & rated 92 points: Clear burgundy color.

Lovely savory nose. Pot Pour, hot bitumen, blackberries.

Palate is decidedly medium weight. Surprisingly red fruited, although also some black fruits. Has a savory, dried her quality on the finish.

I like this style of CNDP. (1656 views)

Domaine du Pégau is a beloved icon of traditionalism in Châteauneuf du Pape, crafting wines that dually epitomize the Châteauneuf style of the Southern Rhône while being unmistakably Pégau. Long owned by the Féraud family, the estate is run by the charming Laurence, a Parker Wine Advocate Wine Personality of the Year who was exceptionally well-schooled by her father Paul. Despite receiving six 100-point scores in less than 10 years, Domaine du Pégau is a down to earth specimen of Southern France hospitality.

Pégau produces three high-end Châteauneuf-du-Pape cuvées: the traditional Cuvée Reservée, the special Cuvée Laurence, and the incredible Cuvée da Capo (made from the best grapes in only the best years). These wines are aged in large old oak foudres for at least 18 months in the case of the Reservée, and much longer for Laurence and Capo.

Robert Parker of The Wine Advocate summarizes the house style as follows: “This superb estate fashions an old style, massive, unbelievably rich, rustic Châteauneuf du Pape. If you want to taste what the old style Châteauneuf du Pape of the forties, fifties, and early sixties tasted like, buy a bottle of Domaine du Pégau. They are rich, rustic, sometimes massive Châteauneuf du Papes made with no concession to modern-day tastes.” Furthermore, he continues “I have long been a huge fan of this estate, and have put my money where my mouth is, having purchased all of Pégau’s vintages since 1979.” Heady praise indeed from the world’s leading wine critic.

Domaine du Pégau’s wine have developed a cult-like following among savvy consumers, who adore their expressive style, unique personality and still-affordable prices for the quality and experience they deliver.

“There is a secret in the knowledge transmitted over generations.” — Laurence Féraud

Domaine du Pegau is run by Laurence Feraud and her father Paul.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
