Community Tasting Notes (average 90.4 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 57 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by bablues on 12/14/2019 & rated 91 points: 9th Annual Holiday Dinner and Cellar Raid (Naperville, IL): Part of wine dinner and cellar raid so did not take detailed notes. Excellent showing for this. Def past it's prime but still a nice wine and had a bit more minerality than the others (1705 views)
Tasted by bravo.solares on 1/11/2018 & rated 92 points: Drinking bottles that are mature, so as to liberate some space. Wanted to cellar this one longer, but succumbed to temptation. Really excellent bottle. Mature - tannins still clearly perceptible but no longer intrusive. Terrific nose. Coffee, chocolate, leather, black (and some red) fruit, forest floor. Palate is balanced (fruit, acidity, hint of oak), with some tertiaries emerging. Very enjoyable. (1909 views)
Tasted by bravo.solares on 11/3/2017 & rated 92 points: I feared this may be over the hill, but thankfully I was wrong - this was excellent. Superb nose. Could smell this for hours. Excellent palate. Tannins integrated, delicious fruit (think Right-Bank styled blend meets new world fruit), some enjoyble tertiary notes emerging. Well balanced. Nothing was out of whack. Will drink my remaining bottle in 12-18 more months. Drinking window in cellar tracker seems off. (1908 views)
Tasted by Harry Cantrell on 7/15/2015 flawed bottle: corked (4144 views)
Tasted by Josh Dooley on 9/15/2014 & rated 91 points: Drank from 1.5L and it still was showing very well. Great dark fruit notes and complimented a Rib Eye perfectly. (4729 views)
Tasted by subir on 12/27/2013 & rated 93 points: From magnum. Was surprised at how vibrant this wine was, I may have to revise my estimate of how long this can be cellared. I've thought it was 10 years, but this will easily last another 2 for 15. (3967 views)
Tasted by boxedwine on 2/17/2013 & rated 91 points: very tasty. (4401 views)
Tasted by rwerner on 10/7/2012 & rated 90 points: Nice earthy, tobacco, and leather on the nose and mouth. Not a lot of fruit on the finish. Might have been better after 7 years than 12. Drink it now if you have it. (4322 views)
Tasted by cabinbor on 10/1/2012 & rated 91 points: Enjoyed this with steak, Fine wine with a medium finish. Held up very well for 12 years old. Decanted it due to the amount of sediment in the bottle. Did not wait more than 30 minutes which was plenty of time. NIce body on the wine and clear color. (2734 views)
Tasted by folsomarndt on 2/12/2012 & rated 92 points: Decanted and waited for 2hrs, before serving with grilled juicy steaks. Fair amount of fine sediment in the bottle, so definitely recommend decanting this.

Beautiful floral and fragrant nose. Silky smooth, with hints of cherry and spice, round tannins and excellent balance. Medium length finish, that's a bit light... but to be expected from a Cab Franc.

Lovely and seductive wine, that both my wife and I enjoyed.
We kind of lost track of this in our cellar, and were glad this held up so well for a 2000 CF. (2858 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 12/8/2011 & rated 91 points: Brickish red. Throwing lots of fine sediment. Very fragrant. Fine fruit in the nose, sandalwood, cinnamon, lavender, spice. Forward and feminine. Delicate on the palate with cherry-like fruit as well as some iron and spice notes. Very silky, polished and elegant as it dances to a decent if undistinguished finish. This is all about sexy, sweet fruit. No tannins to resolve here, it is at its apogee. 4-13-16-8: 91/100. (2547 views)
Tasted by ejca on 7/9/2011: I think I waited too long on this one. Not much fruit left. I would drink up. (2234 views)
Tasted by Mark on 9/12/2010 & rated 88 points: No tasting note recorded at the time. The more I drink older Pride Cab Franc's, the more I'm convinced these wines are their best at year 1 to 3. Granted, 2000 was not a fantastic year, and this bottle shows it, for me, this bottle was missing what I love best about the Pride Cab Franc, the fresh intense fruit profile that make this unique. Will try another bottle soon. (2555 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 6/8/2010 & rated 89 points: Still holding up well. Good balance, stays fresh throughout with nice fruit. (89) (2589 views)
Tasted by kscopela on 2/11/2010 & rated 90 points: Notes the same as previous tasting. (2915 views)
Tasted by shk5157 on 1/31/2010 & rated 91 points: very fragrant berry nose, soft tannins, long finish (2644 views)
Tasted by subir on 12/25/2009 & rated 91 points: Decanted for about 45 minutes and then drank over the course of 3 hours. Beautiful deep garnet color, blueberries, leather and tobacco from the glass. Medium body, well-integrated tannins, mostly fruit aromas in the mouth. Thoroughly enjoyable. (2720 views)
Tasted by shk5157 on 10/27/2009: 92 soft berry fruit, long finish (2781 views)
Tasted by kscopela on 10/26/2009 & rated 90 points: Slightly earthy nose with dark fruits. Decent but not spectacular wine. (2881 views)
Tasted by Haltermr on 10/16/2009 & rated 90 points: Quite a bit of structure left here. Initially lovely on the nose, but quite drying on the palate. With time, fruit appeared and finish softened and sweetened, making this a nice wine. Works a bit better with food. (2923 views)
Tasted by Baeyens Cellars on 8/22/2009 & rated 91 points: Plenty of structure with chalky and mineral tones but still had the fruit to carry through. This wine is ready to be consumed now and I don't feel that its fruit will continue to hold up against its austerity for too much longer. (2981 views)
Tasted by dbkitc on 7/27/2009 & rated 89 points: (from Magnum) Didn't have quite the lift or intensity of the 2002 tasted with it. Still a crowd pleaser. (3035 views)
Tasted by subir on 7/5/2009 & rated 91 points: Beautiful garnet color, some visible browning at the edges. Fine bouquet of cherry, plum and a note of violets. Medium body, with very well integrated tannins, 40 second finish. Drank out of magnum over two hours, was open for 30 minutes before we started, was good till the last drop... (2941 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 6/12/2009 & rated 87 points: Translucent dark ruby with amber edges. Dark fruit on the nose. Touch of powdered sugar, turning leafy violet. Drink up. Pretty good. (3003 views)
Tasted by wabi47 on 11/16/2008 & rated 89 points: soft violet and blackberry on the nose; medium bodied currant, herb, mocha and violets; minor wood influences; a bit thin on mid palate; great with cheese and tomatoes, but not quite up to the teriyaki steak. (3101 views)

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Wines & Vines article

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

North Coast

The North Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) in California, covering more than three million acres, includes Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties, and portions of Marin and Solano counties. (see The Wine Institute for more information)
