Tasted by gharter on 6/15/2023 & rated 94 points: Last bottle, PnP. A beautifully aged claret. Beautiful aromas of black cherries, plum, cassis, blackberries, tobacco, hint of funk that disappears quickly. Loaded with flavor, blackberry, black cherries, tobacco, plums, anise, spice. Silky tannins in a long finish. Deep , complex and rich. Showing beautifully. NO hurry to open if you still have any, but it is showing very well now. Minimal bricking at the edge. (281 views)
Tasted by Charlie C on 2/21/2023 & rated 94 points: Dark, dark red color with very slight fading at the rim. Dark-fruited on the nose, black cherries, blackberries, bit of funk that quickly blows off. Still intense on the palate but elegant. Black cherries, tobacco, plums. Smooth tannins, lovely acidity, fine balance. Finishes long and gradual with plums and currants. Becomes smoother and deeper with air. Still at peak and should drink well for another 5 years. 60% Merlot; 35% Cabernet Sauvignon; 5% Petite Verdot. 14.1% ABV but no heat. (292 views)
Tasted by rcg62 on 6/19/2021 & rated 91 points: Color still decent although some browning. Nose a bit pruny, but palate overall still pretty nice.Tar and dark fruit. Improved over a couple of hours, and enjoyable. But more or less time to drink up. 90-91 (1132 views)
Tasted by Lipsman on 5/19/2020 & rated 93 points: A big mountain Cabernet, blend. Aromatic with smoke and cherries, followed by juicy red and black fruits, saturated flavors, and a long finish. Heavy oak is evident. Needs 30 minutes in a decanter. Will hold for years but drinking well now. (1379 views)
Tasted by RKatzDO on 12/31/2018: Great depth and balance from one of my favorite Napa vintages. Plenty of time left on this. (1580 views)
Tasted by tbone on 1/17/2016: Mellowed considerably over the last decade and is pretty good. My only gripe is a little bite at tail end. Plenty rich, subdued fruit and a minty aftertaste. (2842 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 9/21/2013 & rated 92 points: BLACK CHERRY AND BLUEBERRIES IN THE NOSE. DEEP BERRIES IN THE FLAVOR, BLACKBERRIES AND CURRANTS. MEDIUM TO LONG FINISH. (2077 views)
Tasted by scottp on 7/25/2011 & rated 93 points: Grreat mature cali cab. Drink now. (5133 views)
Tasted by cortoncharlie on 3/21/2009 & rated 92 points: Very open and drinkable after about 45 mins of air but definitely not a profound Pride. (5400 views)
Tasted by gsquireh on 12/5/2008 & rated 94 points: Licorice, vanilla, underbrush, and coffee. Fantastic fruit and a delicious finish. (5123 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 12/16/2007 & rated 90 points: Tasted double blind. Great color, with aromas of mint, eucalyptus and wood. Tart red fruit on the palate with a decent finish. (4670 views)
Tasted by dbg on 10/5/2007: excellent (3985 views)
Tasted by Harry Cantrell on 8/3/2007 & rated 94 points: rich, full oh-so-Pride. Really shows how good a winemaker can be in an off year. (3191 views)
Tasted by Hillbilly on 7/21/2007 & rated 88 points: Blind. Did not show that well. Foley esque oak treatment with some fruit, but a lot of herbal elements on the nose. Did not taste as intense or concentrated. Seemed to lack in the midpalate with more herbal notes. (3609 views)
Tasted by tbone on 4/21/2007: Decanted 1 hour. Started drinking after finishing Domaine Tempier Bandol 04 which was delicous with veal, risotto, baked cabbage. First whiff of Pride burned my nostrils it was so powerful. Huge extract, mint, eucalyptus, little alcohol burn on finish. This wine was way too much on this night with this meal. Probably would have paired better with a big gnarly steak off the bbq. Seems like it has the concentration and fruit to last a long, long time. I will try again in 5+ years. (3145 views)
Tasted by Mark on 9/2/2006 & rated 92 points: Forty five minutes of decanting seems to be required. Then wine then changes at a remarkable pace. A bright cheery and mocha nose with good depth and dark red fruit with cassis and some chocolate. This wine is huge and was drinking very well. Medium length on finish. My wife immediately picked it out blind as a Pride (how, I don’t know). Very good, but missing the depth and full ripe fruit that I’ve seen in other years. (3370 views)
Tasted by shk5157 on 8/9/2006 & rated 97 points: maybe should get 100. Huge nose, incredible fruit with hints of strawberries and 30+ second finish. To top it off, the waiter was grateful for getting a taste and waived corkage :-) (3449 views)
Tasted by luko on 12/26/2005: If you can get past the price tag, this is a damn tasty bottle of wine. Everything was just about perfect.....killer nose, extracted but in balance texture, ripe tasty fruit, blah blah blah. But would I go out and buy more at the price point? No. Would rather find 3 $50 bottles that are just as or nearly as good and not get caught up in the hype! (3639 views)
Tasted by TheOtherPoster on 5/8/2005 & rated 93 points: This was tasty! Dark purple-red color, nose of casis and chocolate, full-bodied with rich fruit and sweet tanins that softened over two hours. Very satisfying. Worth the price of admission? Well, that's a judgment call... probably not in my book. Half the price would be just about right. This will last for a good five to ten more years. (4303 views)
Tasted by dbg on 4/13/2005: outstanding, better than Cab this night (2568 views)
Tasted by dbg on 8/12/2004: outstanding (2735 views)
Tasted by Eric on 8/2/2004 & rated 91 points: Over the weekend I dragged this bottle down to Napa and back in my luggage, but we never got around to opening it. Not wanting it to feel neglected, I thought tonight would be a nice time to open it with a steak. Upon popping the cork this was screaming with cassis and ripe plums. From here the wine tightened up a bit and showed a cedary character amidst the sultry Merlot texture. Compared to younger Pride wines, this had shed the brown sugar and exuberant sweetness in favor of a deeper, denser, more brooding personality. Compared to the 1998 Reserve Cab this is much brighter and more approachable, showing a bit less depth. Nonetheless, this is a gorgeous Merlot dominant blend. (3760 views)
Tasted by JeffGMorris on 12/29/2001: Decanted for 7 hours. Sweet nose of overripe fruit. Explosive tastes of blackberry, blueberry, chocolate and hints of mineral/chalk. Sweet dark fruit everywhere. Some nuances of toasted oak but not overbearing despite it's youth. Much better than I thought it would be now. As sweet and "big" as many Aussies. Great with the duck. Tremendously long finish. Will only get better. (4024 views)
Tasted by dbg on 7/13/2001: Dark purple, dense creamy rich nose with hints of complexity to come,
good fruit but only medium bodied, tons of drying tannins, will fruit
outlast the tannins? (2728 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

North Coast

The North Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) in California, covering more than three million acres, includes Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties, and portions of Marin and Solano counties. (see The Wine Institute for more information)
