Tasted by Dalex on 4/13/2023: Gaja Dinner with Yarom and the gang at Locanda Veneta on April 13th
-spicy nutmet and curry flavors, gorgeous long finish, Christmas fruitcake flavors, contendor for top wine of the evening (904 views)
Tasted by Darjeeling on 2/21/2023 & rated 95 points: Delicious 93-94, double decanted 3 hours before service. Rose and red and black fruits beautiful aroma, persistent and drinking young. (1031 views)
Tasted by bobvictor on 8/27/2022 & rated 95 points: Beautiful. Time to drink these (1488 views)
Tasted by sdsull on 1/31/2022 & rated 95 points: The bottle was decanted for 2h before drinking. It was definitely open for business. Nose was a bit restrained, but still classic Gaja. Vivid fruit, silky smooth and integrated tannins. One of the diners had Pasta with Bolognese and said the wine popped with the tomato-based sauce. Probably should drink the rest of the bottles over the next 5 years. (1962 views)
Tasted by schan109 on 10/26/2021 & rated 93 points: Bottle breathe for 2-3 hours, and decanted for 1 hour before serving. Massive wine with vivid red fruit, loads of flower and mineral nose. Big and full body. Somehow it's yet to show a lot of complexity. I suspect more decanting was needed, or longer cellaring. Will try again 5 years from now (2124 views)
Tasted by bobvictor on 3/15/2021 & rated 95 points: From memory. What has stayed with me is how smooth this is in every way — tannins, viscosity, integration of flavors. This has to be at exactly at peak (2261 views)
Tasted by ovenmitt on 3/3/2021 & rated 93 points: Just entering its drinking window I think, but could probably do better to wait another 5 before opening the next bottle. Wonderful potential. Very nicely balanced with red fruit, licorice, cola and cinnamon. Beautiful mouthfeel, even still if slightly grippy. Paired beautifully with filets and truffles. Very good stuff, but not as ready as the Barbaresco “normale” from a couple weeks ago. (2052 views)
Tasted by osordal on 11/17/2019 & rated 94 points: Beautiful ruby red and no brown rim. Needed a couple of hours to shine. Complex nose with dark red fruit, tar, licorice and spices/tea. Nose was not as hedonistic as the 2001 Barbaresco, but requires attention and time. Very balansed on the palate, leather, smoke and some truffle. Still good tanninstructure. Somewhat difficult to know og this will get better with a few more years in the cellar. Beautiful wine that requires all the attention (2732 views)
Tasted by Sundbyberg on 11/2/2019 & rated 94 points: A great wine in the making, but give this 3-5 more years. Appreciated the 2004 Speers slighthly more. (2584 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 11/9/2017 & rated 90 points: Gaja Sori Tilden White Truffle Dinner (Ai Fiori): Nose is far quieter and shut down relative to the ‘05 in the next glass. Coaxing gives some secondary aromatics and earth. Dark fruit palate. Black liquorice. (4194 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 9/18/2016 & rated 94 points: During a Gaja 2004 merchant tasting. Medium light garnet, Expressive nose of red fruit, mint and some earth. Finally, a more elegant palate than all the other offerings with tannins better in check. Elegant Nebboliolo here, mid bodied. Finish not as long as the Sori San Lorenzo. A general note: The fragrance of all the 2004 Gaja's are top class, I am just not so sure on the tannin management. You could argue to wait another 10 years but then Nebbiolo does get oxidative faster than CabSav. And when I look at the Bordeaux 1986 today, the tannins are gone, but so is the fruit. (4573 views)
Tasted by patespo1 on 8/1/2016 & rated 96 points: Terrific. Perfectly integrated, tannins fully resolved. Cherry, cedar, and black licorice on the nose. Silky smooth, medium body with a long finish. In a great place right now with a long life ahead. (4228 views)
Tasted by Margauxguy on 5/1/2016 & rated 92 points: Good fruit, black skinned cherry, blackberry, good length. Slightly drying component. (3671 views)
Tasted by FamilyLarsson on 10/18/2015 & rated 96 points: Har skrivit om det så många gånger så att snart upplevs som tjatigt. Men detta är verkligen ett strålande vin! (4271 views)
Tasted by King Julien on 8/9/2015 & rated 95 points: Drank at La Terrazza del Eden Rome. (3160 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 11/12/2014 & rated 96 points: Monthly Tasting Group HWS #093; Italy: Gaja. (By CvR): Extremely beautiful bouquet with at first some barnyard which blows off, beautiful oak, cedar, leather, cherries, mint and autumn impressions. On the palate juicy red and dark forest fruits, a beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness. Great and firm but round tannin. Beautiful balance. A great wine with an enormous length and still a great future until into the 2020´s. Without any doubt the WOTN. 96+ (3834 views)
(3371 views)
Tasted by Patrik H on 3/20/2014 & rated 96 points: On the nose, roses, tar,
On the palate, Roses, blackberries, tar and a hint of oak. Very nice tannins
Fantastic balance and length

One of the best wines ever tested. (3791 views)
Tasted by FamilyLarsson on 3/5/2014 & rated 97 points: Helt underbart!
Alla Gajas prestigeviner från 2004 är verkligen helt magiska och detta är inget undantag. Inte riktigt i nivån med Sori San Lorenzo som jag drack igår men verkligen ett toppvin.

Tasted by johnh1001 on 6/20/2013 & rated 91 points: Drank over 7 hours. I wanted to like this more than I did particularly since we had it in Monforte d' Alba. Dried roses and black cherry on the nose. Rich and layered but some what short and bitter and tannic on the finish. Great complexity however. Nice but not at the price given other wines we tried. (3572 views)
Tasted by FamilyLarsson on 3/20/2013 & rated 97 points: Provade samtidigt fyra viner från Piemonte.
(3640 views)
Tasted by ralevine on 7/28/2012 & rated 96 points: Beyond lives up to the flight. Friend broke out of his cellar. What a wow. So happy got a chance to drink this. A real lifetime treat (3986 views)
Tasted by astroman on 1/29/2011: Wow came to mind when nosing it. Extremely perfumed sweet rose, dark berries, violets. Palate was quite restraint but acid was slowly spreading to the back of palate. Amazingly the intensity increases as well. The finish seems to weaker as compared to spress. Very fleshy. (4289 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 2/23/2010 & rated 92 points: Gaja Sorì Tildìn vertical 1970 to 2005 (Institute of Directors, London): Less forthcoming than the 05, intriguing fine pinot-like fragrance which grew in the glass, substantial with lots of pretty cherry fruit, but very grippy (5444 views)
Tasted by lightning on 8/3/2008 & rated 97 points: No formal notes taken. What a nose - haunting, floral, smoky. Concentrated, great length, very grippy but fine tannins. So so good. (4364 views)

Gaja

Producer website

Located in the Tuscany and Piedmont regions of Italy, Gaja makes collectible Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay wines, including the Langhe Conteisa label. Gaja wines are among the highest-rated in all of Italy. It is perhaps best known for its Super Tuscans, which are some of the most elegant on the market. However, the estate also makes top-quality wines rooted in Italian tradition, such as Barbaresco. It is perhaps the most lauded Barbaresco producer today.

Although the estate produces 18 different wines, the production is low at just 350,000 bottles per year, making these wines very rare. The best Gaja vintages include 2018, 2016, and 2015 as well as historically well-performing vintages such as 2013, 2011, 2010, 2008, 2004, and 2003. Many of Gaja’s best vintages have received perfect scores from critics

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Sorì Tildìn

The eight-acre Sori Tildin vineyard was acquired by Gaja family in 1934. "Sori" means a hilltop with a southern exposure; "Tildin" was the nickname of Angelo Gaja's grandmother, Clotilde Rey. Through the 1995 vintage, the Gaja single cru Sorì Tildìn was labeled as Barbaresco. However, starting with 1996 Gaja formally chose to eschew the DOCG requirements for Barbaresco (for example, by blending Barbera and Cabernet Sauvignon into the wines when only Nebbiolo is allowed in Barbaresco DOCG) in favor of the more humble Langhe DOC appellation. What this means is that these wines are defined two ways with 1995 and older as Barbaresco and 1996 and newer as Langhe DOC.
