Tasted by Vinumming & Ahhing on 12/23/2023 & rated 93 points: Classic Graves tobacco on the nose on pouring (after a 90 minute decant) with some air there's a raspberry bonbon sweetness too. Some plum fruit and a hint of iodine. Palate is very savoury and more-ish with some meatiness and some autumnal leaves. Lovely if not quite at the heights of an 1989 enjoyed ten days ago. (663 views)
Tasted by Tartiflette on 12/5/2023 & rated 92 points: 3 hours decant. This bottle seems like in a perfect place right now. A little barnyard in the beginning but it vanished after half an hour. Lovely fat texture with Blackberries, tobacco, leather, chocolate and an earthiness dominating. Very little acidity and tannin left and drying a bit in the end. (656 views)
Tasted by jskuek on 9/3/2023 & rated 94 points: No decant needed, improved over 2 hours drinking from bottle. Tobacco, capsicum, layers of wet stone, superb. Complex and long finishing. (924 views)
Tasted by Tartiflette on 8/24/2023 & rated 91 points: Opened and drank immediately Beautiful light red color and wonderful mature nose. Thick viscosity. When in the mouth you feel the age. Still a good glass but on the downhill. Plums and raisins on the fruity side. But the tertiary notes dominating. An earthy and mature fell dominating (and I like it) Vanilla, leather, tobacco, acetone. Short aftertaste. It’s very easy to drink due to its lack of tannins and acidity. The bottle was almost empty before the meal was ready :-( (907 views)
Tasted by Hugo Hilde on 5/24/2023: Blackberry, smoke, vanilla, musk, cigar box.

Chewy tannins, nice density and a long, somewhat oaky finish. (1414 views)
Tasted by msauer on 3/9/2023 & rated 90 points: opulent, dabei nicht fett; kein Muskelprotz
satte dicke Frucht, Pflaumenmus reif, nicht marmeladig (1331 views)
Tasted by cannym on 12/25/2022 & rated 93 points: Closed on opening, but really fine two hours later. Ruby, fading to rim. Great fruit still, blackcurrant and black plum. Tobacco. Slight earthiness. Lovely bright acidity. Very fresh and great finesse. Long. Really lovely now but ages ahead. (1454 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 12/21/2022 & rated 94 points: 4/12 Deep ruby to garnet. Quite a dense nose of tobacco, warm gravel and sandlewood. Beautifully balanced. Mellow blackcurrant fruit, blackcurrant leaf, graphite. Fresh, refreshing and long. Absolutely gorgeous. Best bottle of this yet. ****1/2 (1424 views)
Tasted by msauer on 9/23/2022 & rated 93 points: Great stuff ! (1614 views)
Tasted by kevin h on 6/5/2022 & rated 94 points: I last had this in 2008 and it was good but not ready. Fourteen years on it is now a magnificent wine. Deep essence of cassis on the nose. Creamy, touch of menthol but pure blackcurrant aromas. Huge cassis flavour. Softened but still tastes young. There is a bit of tannin too. This has another 20 years of evolution ahead of it and could eventually be profound. Still on its journey but already a great wine. Wines from this vintage for me are only bettered by 1961s. (1665 views)
Tasted by msauer on 5/8/2022 & rated 87 points: Enttäuschend
hat seine Frucht verschossen. stumpf am Gaumen, nicht lang. Kreide/Kalk ? (1561 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 6/28/2021 & rated 85 points: Gareth's Bordeaux Dinner - Hawksmoor Guildhall (Hawksmoor, Guildhall, London): Found it difficult to get past the milky, imprecise nose on this bottle - very creamy and lactic. A bit better on the palate, reasonably harmonious but still lacking any nuance. Not the best bottle of this (2578 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 1/30/2021 & rated 91 points: Opened following an over the hill / semi drinkable '96 Flora Springs Trilogy. A good decision. Drinking the FS would have required determination :). This is classic "old school" claret w/ noticeably more structure & acid then the flawed lush Trilogy :). The contrast couldn't have been greater. I gave this a 3hr+ slow ox in Riedel BDX glasses & btl. I was eager to dash out for a quick 4 mile hike. Otherwise, a decant might have filled this out a little more. Color is a healthy deep ruby red. Aromas of underbrush, cedar & iron. Some scorched earth on the plate. Mostly elegant but svelte w/ semi stingy red fruit, scotched earth, iron, tea and more underbrush. As a '96 this likely just needs more time or more air than I gave it to add some much needed flesh. All in all, we enjoyed it but hoped for more. Said to be a blend of 65% CS, 30% merlot & 5% CF. Don't think I revisit this but I'd like to try an '00. Alc is a seldom seen 12%. (3210 views)
Tasted by Nicephoras on 8/28/2020: Lots of pyrazines on the nose, with maybe a touch of pepper, but the tannins are quite silky despite the structure. A lovely wine if you don't mind green in your Bordeaux (this has too much structure to be Loire). Most everyone went to St. Emilion for the blind, which makes sense, as the expectation is Figeac, but this is a lovely wine, even if a touch more green than I'd expect for a Graves. They don't make it like this anymore (literally). (3218 views)
Tasted by wineforth on 5/26/2020 & rated 93 points: The last of the excellent condition half bottles bought recently. Nose different this time, perhaps due to the hot weather. Earthy sous bois, leather and blackcurrant nose. The medium weight fruit is well balanced with soft tannins. Very good length. Easy drinking complexity. Drink up. (3399 views)
Tasted by wineforth on 3/17/2020 & rated 93 points: From excellent condition half bottle bought recently. Nose of dark fruit and tobacco. The light to medium weight fruit is leaving the tannins behind. Very good length and complexity and enjoyable. Drink up. (3544 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 2/20/2020 & rated 93 points: 1996 Bordeaux (Piccolino, Liverpool Street Stn, London): Gorgeous nose.all tobacco and cedar and warm gravel. Attack mirrors the palate. This is a big step up in complexity if not density. Palate doesn’t quite live up to the nose, but it’s very good. **** (3110 views)
Tasted by NickA on 2/8/2020 & rated 92 points: Lucy's 40th; 2/7/2020-2/8/2020 (Ingoldisthorpe Hall): Bit concerned upon opening as the wine tasted thin and vinegary, but two hours after double-decanting, when it came to drink the bottle, it had put on a lot of weight and any hint of taint had dissipated. Still dark in colour, some leather and a bit of cassis, nice acidity and backbone - great with beef. (2659 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 2/2/2020 & rated 90 points: 4/12, excellent cork. Decanted 1 hour.
Deep garnet core, pale garnet rim. Nose shows cool dark fruit, touch of meat, soil, spice. Light/medium bodied, elegant, black fruit, touch of cedar, some red fruit coming through on the mid-palate, hint of leather, fresh/vibrant acidity, soft tannins, very good length, harmonious finish. (2271 views)
Tasted by streethawk on 12/9/2019 & rated 93 points: Beautiful wine, drinking well right now. Very elegant. (2009 views)
Tasted by fred o. on 11/17/2019: Perfect cork. PnP.
Dark ruby with some browning.
Nose some clove, anise, some blackberries.
Palate some clove, red fruits, hints of herbal pyrazine. Still some tannins on finish.
for well-stored bottles, a lovely drink still showing considerable youth and structure. 92 pts (1577 views)
Tasted by Tao on 10/16/2019 & rated 93 points: As it continues to evolve, it becomes a sublime masterpiece, translucent ruby red in colour, healthy shape! The nose is phenomenal, leathery, chalky wild berry fruits, decent palate, hard to resist! (2036 views)
Tasted by Jdwinedrinker on 3/10/2019: This was drinking very well after a few hours of air. Not a blockbuster, but nicely developed (2539 views)
Tasted by jmc167@me.com on 12/7/2018 & rated 94 points: I thought this was absolutely outstanding and wish I had more, pencil lead, leather, red fruit, complex, with excellent balance (2591 views)
Tasted by rSyver on 1/27/2018 & rated 91 points: Mirror my last tasting note on the wine, really singing at the moment and no rush still. Stable and leather over a nice red fruit carpet. The nose perhaps more complex than the palate still, but good balance and OK length.

As stated last time - a nice journey! (3706 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
