Tasted by Simba-wine on 4/10/2024 & rated 98 points: Second blind wine from @Alastair🙏🙏🙏

Oh boy where we all over the map and needed a lot of hints.

So opulent and clear new world taste. So Napa? No!

Who does such ripe style but still everything in balance? Could this be a well aged Vega Sicilia? No🤨

When he said he 1990 and admitted it was Bordeaux 😳 what is this. After going thru what I could not be eventually got to Baron… superb showing an apex but no rush for probably 15 years.

98p (992 views)
Tasted by llink on 4/5/2024 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 2 hours. Stern nose, espresso, graphite, black fruit, tobacco and some bottle funk. Firm palate, deep and surprisingly young with hard, polished tannins and moderate acidity. (1012 views)
Tasted by Gregmonroe on 3/30/2024: So I bought a cellar; 11/12/2022-12/31/2030: My second experience with this wine. Opened at home with a Durand to make sure the bottle is good and double decant to remove sediment. Cork is in great shape, maybe 1/3 saturated. Poured a small taste. Nose of wet stone, mushrooms, olive brine, and slight barnyard. But mature red fruit mixed with a bit of leather and mushroom on the palate, soft to no tannins, and delicious. I’m excited to watch this one a little closer than when I served it at a blind dinner and experience it.

As the night went on, this only improved. In a perfect spot. Beautiful red fruit, integrated tannins, and WOTN for many against a stacked competition. Drink up and enjoy. (1112 views)
Tasted by LWI on 3/20/2024 & rated 95 points: Gorgeous nose, balaced, fine structure. Just entering its window (1531 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/16/2024 flawed bottle: A 65th Birthday Celebration (Schur House - Riverwoods IL): Clearly stewed (1398 views)
Tasted by ONEFIVE on 2/18/2024: Lovely nose of damp earth, tobacco, dried cherry, spice, and a touch of Brett.
Silky on the palate with med+ body, med- acid, and med- tannin. Really nicely balanced.
This is great! In a nice spot and should drink well for another 10 years. (2154 views)
Tasted by DrELW on 2/17/2024 & rated 95 points: This was drunk at a restaurant with friends, and was drunk side-by-side against a '90 L'Evangile. This wine was in its prime and it still had a lot of fruit. It was a textbook example of a properly aged left bank Bordeaux. The tannins were finely resolved and the rough edges have rounded out. The table liked the '90 L'Evangile better since it was more elegant. This is a great wine that one can sit on for at least another 10 years. (1784 views)
Tasted by the player on 2/10/2024 & rated 96 points: Decanted and aerated for three hours. Surprisingly blackish ruby hardly reflecting the wine's age. Complex nose of blackberries, cassis, cigar tobacco, graphite, pepper, leather, notes of game and black tea. On the palate very dense and fat entry, explosive black fruits mid palate, solid backbone and superbly complex and refined, finishes with a bitter chocolate and dark notes with tannins present but overwhelmed by the richness in fruit. Superb wine. Has now elevated beyond the 89 which I love. (2077 views)
Tasted by Dionysos55 on 2/8/2024 & rated 98 points: Alors là, un énorme moment!!! Tasted by Decanting Queen on 12/27/2023 & rated 97 points: Brought by a friend to our house for dinner. WOW. This is what I dream of when I think of Bordeaux. Decanted for sediment and consumed over 90 minutes. Perfectly open and intense plummy fruit, leather, tobacco, slate on the nose and palate. Tannins were so smooth, everything else in balance and a long finish. It really doesn’t get much better than this. (3177 views)
Tasted by aegerter on 12/13/2023 & rated 98 points: The perfect expression of mature Pauillac to me. Had this wine on many occasions and it never disappoints!
Still vibrant fruit, perfectly integrated tannins, everything in harmonious balance. Cassis, crushed rocks, some hint of lead pencil. Long lingering finish. Just a joy! (2563 views)
Tasted by Papies on 12/1/2023 & rated 97 points: Almost a bday dinner (Chez Bruce, London): A magical wine and an arbitrage of a wine vs price ;and still so “young”.
We recently had the the joy of trying the beautiful 1990 Margaux ( Papies 99) and that too had this youthfulness and we feel this is a result of the austerity of their terroirs at a young age vs the more juicy St Julian’s which now feel like they are getting on the old side from this glorious vintage.
This is a spectacular bottle and frankly we should have decanted longer as the wine is indeed youthful still, bright fruit, still just turning secondary and a joy. This is the second bottle we try in the last 3 months from different batches ( Papies 98) and indeed one of those great experiences that remind us why we love the classical clarets so much. 97-98 and buy on sight wine. (2879 views)
Tasted by Rabaja on 11/25/2023 & rated 96 points: PnP: leather, pyrazines, red currant, gravel. Fairly forward nose. Silky on the palate and showing red fruits, leather and spice. Tannins are mostly resolved.

Six hour slow ox does a lot of good for this: super floral, more red spice punch, pencil lead, dried cherry. Just a beautiful wine. Probably could use more exposure to air. No need to rush and drink this. (2546 views)
Tasted by Francophile1 on 11/19/2023 & rated 94 points: Thanksgiving Mondo Dinner 2023 (Atlanta, GA): Tasted double blind. Clearly Left Bank and easy to call it as Pauillac. Wonderful nose and similar to the '96 Cos d'Estournel that came before it with some greenish herb on the finish. This had more tertiary character and tobacco than the Cos, however. Once again, I called it '96 Pichon Lalande. Once again, blind tastings are so very humbling. (2882 views)
Tasted by Irish_Wine on 11/14/2023 & rated 97 points: Expressive nose with a core of fresh blackcurrant and blackberry compote. Layers of cigar box, fine spices and earth. Complete and refined on the medium to full bodied palate. Long, evolving finish with spiced, dried fruits and a savoury touch. Pure enjoyment from first pour. In a perfect spot to drink but no immediate rush.

WSET Notes:

Deep garnet.

Pronounced on the nose with blackcurrant, blackberry compote, cedar, clove, caramel, violet, graphite, tobacco, leather, prune and earth. Developing.

Pronounced and dry on the palate. Medium plus body, high acidity, medium alcohol, high acidity, high tannins, long finish.

Can drink now but has potential for aging. (2664 views)
Tasted by sjfunkenhauser on 10/3/2023 & rated 97 points: Absolutely incredible wine. Precision, depth of flavour and layered complexity. A mix of fresh and dried fruit, coffee grinds, and savoury notes beautifully woven together. One of the longest, evolving finishes I've experienced.

Deep garnet colour.

Pronounced aromas of dusty road, coffee grinds, leather, cigar box, blackberry compote, ripe cassis, dried lavender, cinnamon, tomato leaf.

Pronounced palate.

Medium (+) body, medium (+) acidity, medium (+) tannins, long finish. (3106 views)
Tasted by Liam McKeown BBR on 9/12/2023 & rated 90 points: Drank from a double magnum sent from the Chateau to dinner at BB&R. When first opened, the aromatics were heady but this slowly deteriorated throughout the night. I wouldn't decant this but rather enjoy the journey yourself in the glass. Notes of tomato leaf, cigar box, blackberry, dark plum, fig, raisins, violets and fresh dough. The acidity is still fantastically high and balances what is a rich but polished palate. (2982 views)
Tasted by Cailles on 9/3/2023 & rated 94 points: This is a very elegant Pauillac that is just entering its prime drinking window. The fruit is still strong, the structure is soft, but the tertiary aromas are only slowly emerging, suggesting that this wine will need another 5-10 years to fully blossom. Still, it's great to drink today, even if this bottle didn't have the same complexity, precision and purity as the better Pauillac in the next glass, the Dominus 1992 (rated 99pts). This bottle was at 94pts+.

TN: A bit shy at first, this opened up nicely with air. Dark, black cassis fruit at the core, with crushed stone, some forest floor and tobacco, as well as herbal notes (with an impressive mint component over time) around it. Medium expressive on the nose, a bit more intense on the palate. Not perfect precision and purity here, aromas were a bit muddy at times. All quite harmonious and balanced. Embedded in a fine structure with silky tannins and a good acid backbone. Nothing excessive. Medium+ length finish.

Decanting: I would decant this for a good hour or two. (3408 views)
Tasted by Papies on 8/5/2023 & rated 98 points: Papies at 30 (The Waterside Inn): Decanted and served and the words of the sommelier at The Waterside Inn resonated with this wine " Its among and especially for the price, the bets wines we stock"
And indeed this was exceptional and even more followed in the footsteps of the 1996 Haut Brion ( Papies 94) and wiped the floor with it. Still so much alive almost young in some respects but also so well mature and elegant. A class act for lovers of old school well aged claret. Earthy, soft mushroom, still some spice and soft mocha, rich fruit still resonates and we think this is easiest the best Pichon Baron we have come across and among the best wines too. Harmonious, elegant and just exceptional. 97-99 (4078 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 8/2/2023: Rich and complex, rich cassis, cocoa, leather, gravel. A-/B+ (3255 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 8/1/2023 & rated 98 points: This is a monster of a wine. Rich, delicious black cherry fruit with cassis and chocolate flavors, multilayered, excellent structure, long finish. Drank with the 1990 Pichon Lalande. Both were incredible but the Baron was preferred (2859 views)
Tasted by remyworldpeace on 7/28/2023 & rated 97 points: 2.5hr decant. Strawberry, cherry and cream on the nose. On the palate a lovely melange of stewed strawberry, dark cherry, rose petals. Sweet Cedar and sweet graphite on the finish. Nice length to finish.

This is less sweet than the 89 Haut Brion tasted alongside. I really love the more savoury graphite and minerality. Lovely mature claret showing the glory of the vintage. A very elegant Pauillac and comes extremely close to the 1989 Haut Brion. (2586 views)
Tasted by aegerter on 7/27/2023 & rated 98 points: Always a favorite example of a well aged Pauillac!
Love it! (2580 views)
Tasted by luHar1423 on 7/21/2023 & rated 99 points: What a fantastic wine just entering the perfect drinking window.
Perfectly balanced acidity dancing tango on your palate together with silky tannins, and delicious fruity notes- what else would you like to have from a perfect wine?
The only wine I had so far that deserves a notch higher rating was the 1982 Mouton-Rothshild.

My advise: go hunting for the 1990 Pichon Baron - I am eagerly waiting to get hold of this vintage and the 1989 as well! Both can last more than a decade in the cellars! (2766 views)

Vineyard map

Background: Pichon Longueville Baron stretches out on beautiful land with soil made of gravels from la Garonne river in the south of the appellation, on a plateau that serves as a transition between the commune of Pauillac and Saint-Julien. Planted with vines since the late seventeenth century, it became almost immediately famous. Produced by Jacques de Pichon Baron de Longueville, the wines of Pichon Baron were challenging the quality of those of Latour in the early eighteenth century. Promoted Second Cru Classé in 1855, the estate is divided for the inheritance, and the wines are vinified separately since 1860: Raoul, only surviving son of the Baron Joseph, takes the helm of the current Pichon Longueville Baron, often called "Pichon Baron," while his daughter Virginia, wife of Comte de Lalande, receives the other portion of the property, hence the name of her part : Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Bordeaux Wine Guide

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
