Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.5 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 50 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by walkerjfw on 7/29/2023: In my cellar for around 10 years...some casual Italian tonight at home pulled this on a whim. First bottle from this purchase. Decanted for 20 minutes, drank over an hour.

Deep purple/garnet color, clear, no real separation. Nose showing dark fruits, tobacco. Palate showing currant, plum, cassis, cocoa. Was a bit pruned on mid palate early in the tasting, as it opened that smoothed out. Really singing at 45 minutes in...:) Rich and viscous texture, full body, medium/long finish

Nicely aged, in a great place showing no signs of fading. A bigger, more full bodied wine than expected. Made in modern Spanish style. Would pair with red sauces or savory dishes (would be fantastic with steak). One bottle left - will have to look for more of this... (617 views)
Tasted by Inforred on 6/12/2023 & rated 92 points: Still purple. A little reticent on the nose, sensed graphite, cedar, blackberry. Fine sediment in the glass. Pretty dark fruit and a stiff backbone. Good drinking window, but no rush (657 views)
Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 11/27/2021 & rated 94 points: Glass: Riedel Vinum Syrah
Popped and poured, drunk over three days. Clear, deep, inky ruby color with some purple reflexes. Clean, pronounced and developing nose. Tobacco, lots of cassis, slate, tar, espresso, dark chocolate, herbs. Wow! Very complex, deep, dense and almost intoxicating.
Dry, high, racy acidity that balances the high alcohol (~15% abv) extremely well. Never felt signs of hotness in the wine, which surprised me a lot! The high tannin is mellow and very fine grained.
On the palate an orgy of cassis and plum juice. Very pure fruit, not cooked/stewed. Fine oak, lots of chalky mineral notes. This is a very deep and dense wine, but it is also juicy, fresh and very well balanced. The finish is also very long and complex. Wow! I expected something more bold, broad and hot and was so pleasantly surprised! Drinks beautiful right now but has the potential to age for another decade. 94+ (2017 views)
Tasted by TMacpherson on 11/15/2021 & rated 96 points: What a beautiful bottle of wine. Very well integrated. Fruit is ripe and delicious but not over extracted. Finish is shorter than we'd like, but that's really just quibbling around the edges. Highly recommend. (1825 views)
Tasted by robmatic on 2/2/2021 & rated 95 points: Tremendous presence and density, powerful fruit, and just awesome intensity. Still in love with this wine. (2519 views)

Color: Striking bright ruby red with a purplish (still ???!) hint Aroma / bouquet: A striking and dusty bouquet. Dominated on the one hand by sweet dark fruit, on the other by heavier and spicy notes of tobacco, grilled meat, espresso and leather. Taste / Aftertaste: Also in the mouth this Grenache-Carignena blend of old vines gives the impression of a wine from 2015 rather than from 2005. Powerful acids, powerful tannins and at this stage (still?) seriously alcoholic which slightly detracts from the balance and harmony of this wine. In the aftertaste the tannins of the wine show themselves a bit 'angular' ... General / potential: At this stage of this wine - or maybe I don't have an optimal bottle? - I find it difficult to place the scores of WA (98/100). The wine is pleasant, but too alcoholic at this stage, while I am a bit concerned about the somewhat stern and angular finish. Drinkable according to WA between 2018 and 2040. I like to drink my next bottle from 2026. 50 + Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 13 + Taste / Finish: 13 + General / potential: 7 = 88/100 (2196 views)
Tasted by Lobonick on 8/22/2020 & rated 93 points: Just a gorgeous wine. Layered and complex. This bottle could have aged another ten years. (2351 views)
Tasted by Montesquieu on 7/15/2020 & rated 95 points: From the Blackberry Farm cellar. Too high octane to merit an even higher score, but alcohol aside, it's a lovely big Priorat at age 15. Still mostly primary fruit flavors. Pick this if you want big, old, complex Garnacha. (1973 views)
Tasted by Topper on 11/29/2019 & rated 91 points: Still big, though less so than a couple years age. Pretty serious wine with lots of fruit and still some grouchy tannins. I'd hold on to these for a few more years before opening another. (2144 views)
Tasted by sdr on 11/28/2019: Still going strong, tannic, secondary. (1860 views)
Tasted by StainedGlass on 6/15/2019 & rated 93 points: Inky violet color. Black and blue fruit dominated with blackberry, cassis, and plum, vanilla. Powerful but sleek. Ripe and modern. 15% abv. Am interesting variation from Rhône blends. (2015 views)
Tasted by Stevere on 12/26/2017 & rated 97 points: Blueberry, black cherry, high flavor intensity, all in balance. Great bottle of wine. (2964 views)
Tasted by MarcoNahuel on 12/6/2017 & rated 93 points: Excellent Priorat - opened one hour before but should have left it for at least two hours before drinking! Definitely ready to drink now, but it gave me the impression that it might actually get better over the next 5 - 10 years! Who knows...
Whatever you do, if you like Priorats, you’re going to enjoy this one tremendously!
Careful: A lot of sediment! (2789 views)
Tasted by pablor on 10/7/2017 & rated 95 points: Subtle and supple, i think are the most predominant descriptors for this nice bottle. Complex, with primary and secondary notes abounding at this stage. NEEDS air, after 2 hours in decanter started to truly show its magic. Be careful with the food pairing because as gently as it is, a thick sauce could overpower it. In fact, this is more a meditation wine that needs the spotlight and will reward you with many layers of enticing aromas if you give it the attention it deserves. In its drinking window right now (2770 views)
Tasted by Henry Miller on 7/15/2016 & rated 95 points: Whatever burly rusticity that this had a few years ago has evaporated and left an concentrated, but elegant statement of the power and breed of great Priorat. The great 2005 Salanques foreshadowed this with an identical profile in a less concentrated, early-maturing, package. Mas Doix requires patience until it reveals its feminine and elegant side. This is fairly mature now, but will endure for at least another 5 years. (4214 views)
Tasted by Topper on 5/25/2016 & rated 92 points: Big powerful burly wine with tons of red/blue fruits, high extract but some harmony showing through the whole thing. An international styled priorat that will appeal to lovers of big modern wines. (4142 views)
Tasted by joefel on 5/10/2016 & rated 95 points: Opened, decanted, and poured - glad I poured it through a screen - heavy sediment. Deep, dark red with lots of purple in color. Slight oak in the background with loads of black cherries on the nose and palate. Medium to full bodied, with no harsh tannins, great mouthfeel and structure, with a medium long finish. Every sip leaves you wanting more - really great bottle of wine! Drinking well right now, but will be better in two or three more years. Could see this easily lasting seven to ten more years. (3318 views)
Tasted by SineQuaNon on 1/24/2016 & rated 93 points: Still rather youthful from this pristinely stored bottle. Showing oaky notes of the first order (i.e. this must have aged in the highest caliber oak casks). Rated 92-93 (closer to 93) (3685 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 12/11/2014 & rated 97 points: Beautiful nose of "terre", very black fruit, characoal, sandalwood, cedar... taste is sappy "cerises du Nord", crispy red berries, loads of nice and dry tannins, finishing on a superbrefreshing acidity.... Great great wine with roasted steak!! (4446 views)
Tasted by Armando B on 5/28/2014 & rated 92 points: Gigantic wine with the stuffing to carry it. Not for the AFWE. Had very interesting menthol/anise/butterscotch note that I can only recall having experienced in a CH Astralis. Seems like this wine should last for decades. Big dark fruit and spice notes too. Not easy to pair. Memorable. (3616 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 3/24/2014 & rated 94 points: As it is now it may not be my favorite style of wine but it is really impressive.
Darkly colored with an intense and youthful nose featuring loads of toasty oak,
dark fruit, minerals, aniseed, espresso roast, it is also full bodied as expected, a little
too sweet for my taste but with intensity, complexity and length. I am not sure how
well it goes with food but on its own with small nibbles it is very hedonistic. (4092 views)
Tasted by Yiannis on 3/23/2014 & rated 95 points: Very dark opaq. On day one the nose was oak-dominated with scents of volatility. On day 2 it was fantastic, with dark plums, chocolate, creamy oak, smoke, sweet spice and minerality. Full-bodied with textbook, velvety tannins, rich fruit, balancing (medium to high) acidity ana a medium-long aftertaste. Needs further cellaring or prolonged decanting to express itself. Hedonistic wine. (3765 views)
Tasted by Lobonick on 11/6/2013 & rated 92 points: A deep ruby colored wine that is beautiful, layered, and complex from start to finish. Nose seems a bit closed but shows black fruit, spice, and earth. Palate shows black fruit, sweet spice, a tiny bit of black pepper, espresso, and a rich mid-palate that sings. Finish is long. This is a gorgeously beautiful wine that will develop beautifully over time. (3465 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 3/30/2013: Off the cork pull lots of roasty toasty oak on the nose. Full mid palate, very short finish. Out classed by Clos Erasmus and L'Ermita. Maybe not a fair comparison but hey, there it is. (3402 views)
Tasted by A&C on 11/7/2012 & rated 92 points: This was consumed over several nights. Yummy stuff. (3660 views)

Vinos de España - Wines of Spain (Instituto Español de Comercio Exterior) | Wikipedia
Wine Map on weinlagen-info

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
