Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.4 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 45 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by oxwombat on 12/9/2023 & rated 93 points: Opened at Octavium in HK. Slow-oxed and served blind.

This was a very pleasant surprise, and the vintage completely threw me off, as I guessed something younger. So many bottles of Lafon are affected by premox that I don't have much experience with their (slightly) older wines, but this proves that if you have a good one, it can definitely age!

Called Meursault from a good producer and was grateful to get it right. Beautiful buttery richness coming through, still fresh with lovely balancing acidity. Wonderful white Burg.

Hard to comment on upside, given so much bottle variation. However, I feel this particular one could have kept at this level for a while yet, and I'd love to revisit. (415 views)
Tasted by vetty on 2/23/2022 flawed bottle: Too oxidative and advanced. Aroma of cooked vegetables (1710 views)
Tasted by Christian Rognes on 7/4/2020 & rated 96 points: Elderflower, vanilla, butter, and a vibrant acidity tying the aromas into a long and powerfull wine. (2423 views)
Tasted by KenK on 4/26/2020 & rated 93 points: Buttery with pretty floral aromas and wet stones. No overt signs of oxidation beyond age appropriate.
Soft and creamy oily texture with light tropical yellow fruits. Elegant, delicate in flavors, yet with serious weight. In a nice window, but time to drink. Opened for a COVID virtual tasting with Lea Lafon. (2553 views)
Tasted by Topper on 3/23/2020 & rated 87 points: Starting to show oxidation
Been drinking king these every 2 years
Was best at age 8 and has been slipping ever since (2501 views)
Tasted by Christian Rognes on 10/18/2019 & rated 93 points: Yellow plums, brioche. Fruity, but still quite prominent tannins. Great structure and finish, but somewhat rough in the edges. Lacks some acidity. All in all - great wine, but no rush to drink really... (2429 views)
Tasted by liber on 12/21/2018 & rated 93 points: 6th of 6, pnp, perfect cork and level, dumb, less to it than last bottle, but still classy and excellent, sense that it has more to give. F+ (18). (2024 views)
Tasted by waterwater on 10/16/2018 flawed bottle: Oxidized. At beginning, I thought maybe it was style, but even waited one or two hours it was still same, no developpment. (1530 views)
Tasted by liber on 7/27/2018 & rated 94 points: 5th of 6, pnp, perfect cork and level, back on top form, grand cru weight, cut by lemon zest, tempted to upgrade, not far off the v classy Perrieres! F+ (18). (1684 views)
Tasted by RichD2 on 6/2/2018 & rated 93 points: We enjoyed this mature example of rich white burgundy. (1875 views)
Tasted by liber on 1/17/2018 & rated 91 points: 4th of 6, opened an hour, perfect cork and level, suave and slightly oily/lanolin, but even broader and now lacking mineral and any citric cut or zip....doesn't present as old and may tighten again but probably safer to drink up. Downgrade to F (17.5). (2045 views)
Tasted by liber on 8/14/2017 & rated 93 points: 3rd of 6, pnp, perfect cork and level, as my last note, still pale, youthful, lovely energy to fruit though underlying flavours broad. F+ (18). (2096 views)
Tasted by Topper on 8/13/2017: Big and burly, leaning toward california in style. Lots of caramel and honeysuckle, mouth watering acidity to boot. Not as fresh as the very best years but ready to show its stuff. (2193 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 2/8/2017 & rated 90 points: Very restrained tonight but the yellow fruit is pure and precise with balance. Like Roulot and Coche Dury, Lafon has made a balanced white in a ripe vintage. (2289 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 11/14/2016 & rated 93 points: very nice, open, good tension, a little bit too much oak still? (2352 views)
Tasted by liber on 8/3/2016 & rated 93 points: 2nd of 6, pnp, perfect cork and level, much stronger showing than last October's note, tightened nicely and becoming more expressive, if still v youthful, more to it than the Barre but not (yet) in such a good place! F+ (18). (2108 views)
Tasted by rlove on 7/4/2016 flawed bottle: Advanced, showing some citrus, hazelnut, and mushroom notes, turning more oxidative with air. (1951 views)
Tasted by justburg on 5/5/2016 & rated 91 points: Dinner at Jade Palace. I liked this. A tad advanced, and that probably accelerated the drinking window, but this was a really flashy and quite oppulent wine. Yellow gold, with lots of tropical fruit, peaches, mango. A touch oaked but nothing too obtrusive. Nutty and toffee like with extended time. Fleshy yellow fruit on the palate, with peaches, sweetened pineapple, butterscotch, milk custard. Good wine! (2291 views)
Tasted by Harley1199 on 11/28/2015: Tasting at Les 110 de Taillevent and a 2005 little challenge; 11/27/2015-11/29/2015 (Paris - France): By now the vintage does not help, dead on the nose (ie not closed) and very shy in the mouth. Except just be the " attack of Argon " to avoid.

A estas alturas la añada no ayuda, muerto en nariz (esto no es cerrado) y muy tímido en boca. Salvo que sólo sea el "ataque del Argón" para pasar. (3120 views)
Tasted by liber on 10/16/2015 & rated 91 points: 1st of 6, decanted 30 minutes - mid yellow, leggy; honeysuckle, flowers, trace of chalk; medium bodied, decent length and persistence, broad flavours, could do with tightening and a bit more zip, disappointing for Lafon at this stage, though very "charmant" and may yet come good as the underlying flavours are classy. A weak fine (17.5/20). (2209 views)
Tasted by WillersC on 6/27/2015 & rated 95 points: I was expecting the worst, but this was remarkably excellent.

Really fine line, great length and mouthfeel. Wonderful white burgundy, drinking really well, and youthful. The only drawback, is that this hasn't evolved much yet. (2296 views)
Tasted by globi on 6/18/2015 flawed bottle: Badly oxidized. Undrikable. (2149 views)
Tasted by The Guzz on 6/5/2015 & rated 91 points: Golden tropial fruit. Big palate. Spicy brown sugar. Pushes on slightly too fat. (2140 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 2/17/2015 & rated 84 points: Golden color; oxidized! sherry-type; drinkable, but that's it. Absolutely not worth the money! (2072 views)
Tasted by Barry Rothof on 1/16/2015 & rated 92 points: LUNCH @ CALLAS (The Hague): A fuller, broader impression than the Les Clos. More flavorful with ripe yellow fruits and some pleasing fatness. A classic Meursault Charmes. (2792 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
