Community Tasting Notes (average 93.4 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 16 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by wino_tim on 11/4/2021 & rated 90 points: Pale gold. A somewhat somber nose offers aromas of baked orchard fruit, dried peach, old honey, nuts, and a touch of spice. Medium to full bodied on the palate where this is more regal and vibrant with citrus-led flavors and lots of grip. This has its appeal but it certainly doesn't feel very Montrachet-like. (966 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 2/26/2021 & rated 95 points: A very well preserved bottle with freshness and youth. More akin to a Chevalier with acidity and minerals in play. This specific bottle had many years of life left, (1416 views)
Tasted by KenK on 12/1/2018 & rated 93 points: Rich creamy lemon chiffon aromas, quilt nice. firm texture vs aromas with nice streak of lemon. Very good texture with a slight bitter edge. Soft texture. Bit compact. Nice dry extract. (2050 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 12/1/2018 & rated 90 points: Ken's 60th Birthday (Smyth and The Loyalist - Chicago IL): In 06/07/08 vertical. The far laggard of the flight. Mature yellow and and baked apple with slightly sweet spice and a slightly sweet finish. Good+ density, and good length. Dark color, fully mature. Much less interesting vs when last tasted three years ago. (2576 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 12/1/2018 & rated 90 points: Ken's 60th Birthday (Smyth - Chicago, IL): 06/07/08 vertical. From 750, the other two were magnums. Medium gold in color and showing some modest oxidation on the nose, which was especially notable relative to the youthfully bright 07 and 08. The palate has good richness and concentration but is missing the extra gear that both the 07 and 08 showed. (2371 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 11/18/2018 & rated 92 points: Tasted blind. Thought it was a late 90s montrachet. Ripe and powerful with honey, carmaelized orchard fruit and minerals. When the wine owner told me it was younger, I immediately went with 05/06 because of the ripeness and low acidity. There was lots of layers that kept unfolding in the glass. Deeply pitched and long. But it started to drop after 90 mins in the glass. Dont think it will improve from here. Drink up. 91-92 (1603 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 4/2/2018 & rated 95 points: 2006 Burgundy Dinner (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): Superb. This was by far the pick of the whites amidst some fairly stern competition - while the other three Grand Crus showed a little sweeter and maybe flatter than normal, the Sauzet somehow managed to transcend the vintage in its sheer quality. The nose still smelt rather ripe, but this was the least sweet of the quartet of whites, showing light notes of honey and oak alongside white fruit and a touch of peach and pear, all this fringed with drifts of earth, spice and mineral. The most classically Burgundian of the lot. The palate was very classy. Everything was in the right place - effortless depth and power, clean, pure white-fruited flavours, charming lifts of spice and mineral, and a nice bit of superbly integrated acidity and minerally structure - all this packed beautifully in a creamily complete package. Superb long finish too, with a nicely savoury flush of earthy mineral and spice absolutely filling the backpalate. Super stuff, with more elegance and verve than its peers. Drinking nicely on the night too, but with the structured and freshness to age effortless over the next few years. (724 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 12/16/2017 & rated 98 points: Fantastic showing! (1562 views)
Tasted by Topper on 6/18/2016 & rated 95 points: Shows exquisite balance and complexity with full stone fruit and straw flavor coupled with a compelling but not overwhelming mineralogy. Balance here translates into a glorious wine in which none of the beautiful parts outshine any of the others. A lesson in winemaking. (2004 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/24/2015 & rated 94 points: La Paulée Meets Chicago - Dinner (Blackbird - Chicago IL): Small pour, brief note. Served in 02/04/06 vertical. Lush and very enticing stone fruit throughout, also slightly tropical. Great tasting now, perhaps even better than the 2002, but less nuanced. I wouldn't cellar this long-term, but it's holding nicely for the vintage. (3210 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 8/28/2015: Good but just a little sweet and flabby for my taste, others at the table are loving it. (872 views)
Tasted by lepetitchateau on 6/5/2012 & rated 88 points: Not so much... not my style. (3470 views)
Tasted by Charlie Carnes on 2/7/2011 & rated 91 points: There is no doubt that the fruit in the glass comes from a special place. I mean, the aromas of the fruit kaleidoscopic in depth and breadth. We're talking beautiful tree fruits, minerals, complex tropicalness, earth tones, all manner of flowers... In the mouth, up front, especially early, there is a lovely fluidity and a vigorous attack that is at once dry and sweet, keen, and full. Then I don't know what happens. After about a half hour, the wine, especially on the back side becomes a little heavy, slightly oaky(?), and maybe a tad warm. I only had a few bottles of Montrachet in my life, and this is the first one through Burgundy colored glasses, and I know its young. I am just nagged by the backside. And also, I have had two other Sauzets this year, and they all started awesome, but ended up right where this one is, eventually tasting more like each other than anything else. This is still a good wine, no doubt. Its just that it started like a 97 point wine and ended like a 90. 90 at this price equals deep kimchi. (3565 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
