Tasted by rnellans on 2/18/2015 & rated 93 points: Very dark. Big, rich, dense, sweet palate. Balanced with soft tannins. Good structure with moderate tannins in the sweet finish. Needs time (208 views)
Tasted by BradE on 2/18/2015: A very good, classy wine. The table loved it. At the beginning of what will likely be a very long life. (252 views)
Tasted by steinersing on 7/27/2011 & rated 93 points: Had at the two-star restaurant at Giardino in Ascona. Pure Merlot taste with sophistication. So more violet / dark fruit than milk chocolate. Fine tannins. Full structure and qite long. Lots of aging potential but drinks well. (2849 views)

Rockss and Fruit (9/10/2007)
(Castello di Ama Vigna l'Apparita) This is the Tuscan Merlot no one talks about. It's a shame because it is the most classic and the most ageworthy. Beautifully pure Merlot fruit on a serious structure with a very very long finish. Really reminds me of a top vintage of old-school St. Emilion like Figeac or Magdelaine but with that wonderful Tuscan acidity. Brilliant wine and better than Masseto and Messorio and a touch cheaper.

Castello di Ama

Producer website
Location on Google Map

Castello di Ama’s 65.38 hectares of specialised vineyards, officially enrolled in the Chianti Classico Register, are located at elevations between 390 and 530 metres in calcareous-clay, pebble-rich soils.
Part of the vineyards were planted between 1974 and 1978, at an average density of 3,000 vines per hectare, while newer plantings at a density of 5,300 vines per hectare, starting in 1996 and continuing to the present date, replace the outdated vineyards.
The vines are vertically trained, to the open lyre pruned to the Guyot system, and to spurred cordon.
The varieties, grafted onto rootstock 420, are 80% Sangiovese and 20% Malvasia Nera, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.
