Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.7 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 46 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by wxs2102 on 12/19/2023 & rated 93 points: @ Frevo NYC. Hard to tell this is 21 years old - fairly young and fresh-tasting. Mostly apricots and tree fruits up front with the signature lilac florals only coming out an hour in. Very refined, smooth with a big whiff of Smokey undernotes. That said, lacking some energy and a bit thin/short on the finish. Probably waited a bit too long on this one. (294 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 2/9/2023 & rated 92 points: Slightly tipped over the edge and losing energy. (800 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 3/11/2022: Beautiful. Subtle and a bit shy for a grand cru. Complex, very mineral wine, with just a whiff of those white flowers you get in Blanchot. This is in perfect spot. Nothing overdone. (984 views)
Tasted by Victor J. Randall on 9/29/2021 & rated 94 points: Golden hay-coloured which bleached out with air contact. Tiny hint of oxidation that dissipated after 20 minutes. Saline, shell-like minerality, lemon tart, with ripe quince and pears. Acidity perceptible but well integrated. Poise and balance. A refined and seductive beauty in its apogee. Riedel Sommeliers Fishbowl stem. (1225 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 9/28/2021 & rated 95 points: Fresh, forward and well defined bottle. Nice combination of fruit and rocky notes. (1437 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 8/3/2021 & rated 95 points: Great bottle. Lovely minerality with just enough acidity. Balanced citrus and orchard fruits. (1408 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 3/26/2021 & rated 93 points: Cream soda, citrus, crushed stone, orchard fruit and custard. It opens up in the glass but the Raveneau grand cru class and complexity have yet to be fully revealed at this age. (1538 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 8/29/2020 & rated 93 points: Dry lemon, orchard fruits, oyster shell. Nice progression across the palate. Holding together quite well. 93-94 (1370 views)
Tasted by pigdaddy on 2/13/2020 & rated 92 points: decanted one hour. crystalline pale gold; delicate & reserved aromatics, lanolin & chalk, more lifted & saline w/air; elegant mid-weight; more about mineral expression than fruit, talc, super gc concentration on a long finish that became more elevated over two hours. lovely, fully mature & complete.

crispy ciabatta & dijon crumb-crusted nc triggerfish, Meyer lemon & anchovy dressed winter chicories (1215 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 1/7/2019: Flat palate. Drinkable but not a great bottle. (1645 views)
Tasted by rlove on 9/30/2018 flawed bottle: Oxidized. (1614 views)
Tasted by fclarity on 7/14/2018 & rated 95 points: From an excellent looking bottle, this wine had a yellow center and clear rims. The nose was attractive but low intensity at first which is typical of young Raveneau. After 5 hours the medium+ intensity nose put forth citrus, honeysuckle flowers, white stone, and custard.

In the mouth, this was was light but beautifully balanced at first. As it aired, it retained the gorgeous balance but gained in nuance and intensity. It had rich, ripe fruit, crisp acidtiy, and awesome length.

I have been tasting Raveneau for 25 years. As with almost any other White Burgundy, if you PNP these you will miss a great experience. Moreover, it tastes so good now it is easy to assume that it is fully mature. These wines are built to age and need lots of air to show their best. Blanchot is the most etherial of the Grand Crus so it will not have the power of, say, the Valmur or even the MdT. However, this wine is a guaranteed winner that is just entering its drinking zone. It will get better for 5-10 years and last another 10 beyond that. Enjoy! (1776 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 6/8/2018 & rated 92 points: In the zone. Melon, citrus. Such balance. (1545 views)
Tasted by rlove on 7/8/2017 & rated 94 points: Bright yellow. Gobs of honeyed chalk with seabreeze. Nicely textured. The 2002 Blanchot is somewhat surprisingly fully mature, and this from a pristine, fresh bottle. I expect this will hold at peak for several years, but it won't get better—that's okay, though, as this is very fine indeed. (1971 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 6/2/2017 & rated 93 points: Very nice bottle, with light citrus, hints of chalk, and light nuanced acid. In a good spot. (1594 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 4/25/2017 & rated 93 points: Well balanced bottle with a quite full palate. Paired well with sushi. (1575 views)
Tasted by dream on 3/17/2017 & rated 94 points: Still drinking young but the nose is really gorgeous with notes of limestone, oyster shells and lemon peel. Took quite a bit of time to open on the palate and the texture exudes Grand Cru with a fine, oily mouthfeel combined with perfect salty acidity. There are delicious flavor of oyster shells, lemons and chalky minerals and the finish is very finely concentrated and long. A very fine-grained Raveneau that's still on the upswing. 94+ (1663 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 3/10/2017 & rated 92 points: 99/00/02. Some slight off aromas to start, which blew off. Became expressive, enjoyable. (1577 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/10/2017 & rated 93 points: Pre-Paulée Warm-up Dinner (Ai Fiori - New York NY): In 99/00/02/04 vertical. Rich and nicely floral with excellent concentration. Close to fully mature, which was slightly surprising. Very good. (1600 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 1/3/2017 & rated 92 points: Balanced citrus, stone fruit, minerality and acid, all of mid-range intensity. In a good spot, but should be additional upside here. 92+ (1232 views)
Tasted by galenico on 6/16/2016 & rated 94 points: BORGOGNA BIANCA DA VINOGODI: Degustato alla cieca. Parte un pochino sporco: crosta di formaggio, zolfo e muffetta... si pulisce con l' aria, ma è la bocca a incantare!
Profondo, completo, agrumato, pieno, lungo e ancora freschissimo. Il legno è un lontano ricordo e la freschezza finale al sale amaro e salvia è da brivido. Cremosità data dagli estratti e una punta resinosa ossidativa corrobora il fascino di questa grande bottiglia. (2401 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 5/1/2016 & rated 94 points: A private lunch (Restaurant Mirazur **, Menton, France): Pristine bottle. Intense but very lively, lemon yellow colour, absolutely radiant, perfect for age; perfectly classical Raveneau nose, with the calm and wisdom that comes with age, flowers and herbs (chervil, celery) and minerals, ripe lemons, hint of reduction; intensely mineral but relaxed palate with delicate bitters and a whiff of nutty evolution, lemon cream, crisp acidity, relatively restrained flavours, perfect harmony; lacks a bit of resonance on the long finish. I would say that this is now fully mature, but there is no hurry. (2227 views)
Tasted by dream on 3/25/2016 & rated 95 points: This is truly a stunning Raveneau that is quite ripe and rich with delicious flavors of lemon, chalk and red berries (somehow!). Plenty of fresh acidity to balance out the rich fruit and the finish is complex with wonderful mineral and chalk notes. Needed a good hour+ to show itself so I expect a bit of improvement here over the next couple of years. 95+ (1762 views)
Tasted by lepetitchateau on 2/19/2016 & rated 94 points: Showing a heavy, fruit-laden nose. Compared to previous examples, this has gained weight and heft, and this bottle was not really classic Chablis as I imagine Chablis, because of the weight. However, it has oodles of slatey minerality, impressive size. (DB) (1906 views)
Tasted by bill00 on 2/16/2016 & rated 93 points: Oyster shell, lemon butter, lanolin and stone fruit. Rich, creamy texture balanced by plenty of acidity. Ripe stone fruit and melon linger on the finish. This is in a good spot though it still feels quite youthful and could further develop with time. Really nice. (1871 views)

Les Blanchots

Blanchot is faces more towards the east. It is a cooler exposure benefiting from the morning sun, but losing the advantage as the day progresses. Hence it can ripen 5 to 6 days later then the sunnier climats. There is not so much limestone in this climat. There is rather more clay, which becomes pebbly at the bottom. In style it can be quite ‘tender’. I find it a bit like Bouchères in Meursault; get it right and you have something full, light and lacy, but it can easily lose definition. It can be very expressive, but lacks the steely backbone of the better grand cru and as such rates in the third rank. It matures more quickly – a good choice in restaurants, where the vintages are always too young. It is a similar size as the previous grand cru 12.8 hectares, which are cultivated by fewer than 20 producers.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Chablis

Chablis (Fédération de Défense de l'Appellation Chablis) | Chablis (Burgundy Wines)

2014 Vintage Notes:
"... a hybrid of 2004/2007 and 2010. The stone, citrus and limestone amalgam is exactly what we search for in Chablis as the style harkens to a day in the Cote de Beaune proper (1960's - 1980's) when wine was not meant to be consumed the week it was released, battonage was not used by all and new oak was rarely seen ... the texture is natural and 'of the vintage' not 'of the winemaker' .... Like Sancerre or the Loire in general, 2014 in Chablis is one of those rare years with extract and transparency. It appears to be a vintage for the "neoclassic" ages and those of us intent on cellaring the most terroir-driven (but still powerful) examples of vineyard, site-place and varietal will want to invest (heavily) in the magnetic and electric 2014's." - Jon Rimmerman

2018 Vintage Notes:
"There’s not that razor sharp Chablis acidity in 2018,” says Patrick Piuze. “But there is good definition of place. The dry conditions drove vines to drink deeper down in the soil profile."
